That is a missed window — the Mālie Foundation now lists the 2026 Kauaʻi Mokihana Festival for September 20-26, a weeklong late-September gathering centered on Hawaiian cultural practice and hula.

The festival is organized by the Mālie Foundation, a Kauai nonprofit that has carried the event for decades, with the Composers Contest dating back to the festival’s early years. Here is what the week actually contains, why the festival exists in the first place, and how a visitor can build a Kauai trip around it without crowding out the rest of the island.

The festival is named after a small tree — Melicope anisata, mokihana — that is endemic to Kauai, meaning it grows naturally on no other island. The tree carries thin, leathery leaves and small green capsules with a strong anise scent when crushed. Lei mokihana is one of the Garden Isle’s signature lei traditions.

That endemism matters here. Each main Hawaiian island has its own lei material and color; the mokihana is Kauai’s, and the festival uses the name to mark its scope. This is not a statewide event that happens to be on Kauai. It is a Kauai event about Kauai’s Hawaiian cultural heritage, programmed and judged by Kauai practitioners. Hālau hula travel in from across the state to compete, but the rest of the festival — the lectures, the workshops, the composers contest, the lei contests, the craft fair — is run by and for the island’s own kumu, composers, and craftspeople.

The Kauaʻi Composers Contest and Concert is a juried competition for original compositions in the Hawaiian language — mele newly written for the contest, performed live in front of an audience and a panel of judges. For a visitor, it is a rare chance to hear new Hawaiian-language music being made in real time, by composers who write in the tradition rather than around it.

One practical note: this is the only festival event held inside a resort ballroom, which means it has a hard seat count. The hula competition is the part of the week most visitors hear about first. The 2026 sessions run September 24-26 at the Kauaʻi War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue, at 4191 Hardy Street — the venue that hosts most of the festival’s open-to-the-public programming.

The competition presents two styles. Hula kahiko is the older, percussive, chant-driven style; its 2026 group and solo session starts Thursday, September 24 at 5 PM. Hula ʻauana is the modern style, with melodic accompaniment from ʻukulele, guitar, and bass; the group session starts Friday, September 25 at 5 PM, followed by solo ʻauana and awards Saturday, September 26 at 10 AM. A craft fair and food vendors are scheduled from 10 AM on all three days. Recheck the current listing before travel in case the program changes.

Two things to know if you have not been before. First, this is a competition, not a show — the audience is largely family, friends, and other hālau members, and the room watches closely. The etiquette to learn is short. Arrive early enough to be seated before the first hālau enters. Do not get up during a performance. Hold applause until the end of a full piece. No flash. Hawaii is a small place and a visitor who treats the room with care is usually welcomed warmly.

Second, parking in Lihue around the Convention Hall fills early on competition nights, particularly Friday. Plan to arrive earlier than feels necessary, or stay close enough to walk over.

The piece of the festival visitors most often miss is the daytime programming. The 2026 schedule opens the Mokihana Mākeke craft fair and food area at 10 AM Thursday through Saturday at the Convention Hall, alongside the hula competition sessions. This is the part of the festival where you can buy a piece directly from a maker, and it is the easiest event to fold into a normal Kauai sightseeing day.

Around the craft fair, the foundation runs workshops on subjects like ʻoēʻoē and hokiokio (traditional Hawaiian whistles), hula technique, lei-making, and Hawaiian-language pronunciation. Workshops are typically small, sometimes ticketed at modest cost, and frequently the best window into the practice behind what you see on the competition stage. Lectures on Kauai history, Hawaiian language, and cultural practice are mixed into the schedule alongside the workshops.

The festival traditionally opens with a blessing at Kapaʻa First Hawaiian Church at the start of the week, and the Sunday after the hula competition closes with a Hawaiian-language church service at the same church. Both are open to anyone, and both are quiet, small-room moments worth knowing about if you want to bracket the week with something less crowded than the convention hall.

The festival sits at a useful spot on the calendar. Late September is a true shoulder season — summer crowds have rolled off and the heaviest winter swell has not arrived yet — so you can pair festival days with the rest of Kauai without fighting summer demand. The trade-offs are real but manageable.

Where to stay. Lihue and the Coconut Coast (Wailua, Waipouli, Kapaʻa) are the right base. Both the Convention Hall and Kapaʻa First Hawaiian Church are within a fifteen-minute drive of most lodging in this corridor, and the airport is right there. Outrigger Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa is the festival’s recent composers-contest venue and the closest beachfront option to the action; vacation condos in Kapaʻa are common cheaper alternatives. Poʻipū sits south of Lihue and Hanalei on the North Shore is a longer cross-island drive, which adds up quickly across a five-night festival week.

When to come in. For 2026, the posted festival week is Sunday, September 20 through Saturday, September 26. The composers concert is Monday evening; the craft fair and hula competition fill Thursday through Saturday. If you can only attend part of the festival, choose the later window for the widest set of public activities and recheck the listing before booking around one event.

What to do on non-festival days. Kauai is one of the best islands for festival-week visitors because you can be deep in the cultural program from late afternoon onward and out at a beach, on a trail, or up the Wailua River by morning. Kauai tours and activities run their normal September schedules, so a common rhythm is one daytime adventure plus one festival event, with a sit-down dinner in between.
