From the Founder

The heart of this guide

Wait — what's the catch?

Fair question. Here's how the whole thing actually works.

How is all this free?+

Three revenue streams keep the lights on:

  • Affiliate commissions when readers book tours, hotels, or rental cars through our links. The operator pays us a small finder's fee — readers never pay extra.
  • Digital guidebooks and guide materials we wrote and sell.
  • Display ads on most article pages.

That's the whole picture. The full breakdown lives on our How We Earn Money page.

Do you sell my email or browsing data?+

No. Not to anyone. Ever.

If you join our newsletter, we use your email to send Hawaii planning tips and nothing else — one-click unsubscribe at the bottom of every message. We don't sell, rent, or trade reader data. Standard page-view analytics tell us which articles people read; that's where the tracking stops.

What does "pono" travel mean — and why do you keep mentioning it?+

Pono is a Hawaiian word that loosely translates to righteous, balanced, doing the right thing. For travelers, it means visiting in a way that respects the people who actually live there — supporting local-owned businesses, staying off closed trails and damaged reefs, treating cultural sites as sacred rather than scenic, and learning enough about the place to be a good guest.

Every tool and recommendation on this site tries to nudge readers that direction. It's why we won't link to operators who have a track record of disrespecting communities, and why every beach guide includes ocean-safety and reef-safe sunscreen reminders.

Who's behind HawaiiGuide?+

John and Victoria Derrick — two travelers who fell hard for Hawaii on their first trip in the early 2000s and have been coming back ever since. We're not Hawaii residents and we don't claim to be. We're repeat visitors who got obsessed enough with the planning side to build the site we wish we'd had on our own first trip.

Our story goes into the detail, and About Us covers the team that helps us keep it running.

How fresh is the information here?+

The live tools — weather, surf, trail status, fees, gas prices, volcano alerts, flight status — pull from real data feeds and update on their own, usually within an hour of conditions changing.

The written guides get a quarterly review pass at minimum, with timely posts added whenever something changes (closures, new openings, regulation updates). Spot something stale? The "Spot a factual error?" link at the bottom of any article goes straight to us.

Ready to start planning?

The fastest way to a personalized trip plan — five questions, real recommendations.
