Lydgate Beach Park is one of the most family-friendly public places on the island of Kauai. The beach park has plenty of amenities, and one of the park's biggest highlights is the large, double-sectioned rock-enclosed pools. This enclosed pool allows for a nice dip without being exposed to the ocean's pull.

The smaller pool to the left is perfect for toddlers and even babies; the larger pool is excellent for children of all ages, and one can often see fish that swim in and out through the holes in the man-made rock walls.

Swimming outside the pools can be tricky, so be mindful before going in the water, even though a lifeguard tower is nearby.

Just west of Hanalei Bay, Lumahaʻi is the picture-perfect crescent of golden sand ringed in jungle that turns up on every Kauai postcard — it famously stood in for the beach in ‘South Pacific.’ Two distinct stretches share the name, split by Lumahaʻi Stream.

It is breathtaking and almost entirely undeveloped — and it is NOT a swimming beach. There is no reef, no lifeguard, and a powerful shorebreak with strong currents that have caught many visitors off guard. Come for the scenery, the photos, and a walk; stay well back from the water unless it is genuinely flat.

Shipwreck Beach (often referred to as "Shipwrecks Beach") is a great place to catch some sun on a beautiful (and relatively quiet) beach, to hold a private and romantic ceremony, or to explore the surrounding terrain. Located in Poipu, this beach got its name from an old wooden ship sunk off the coast that has long since faded into the deep blue. The swimming at this beach is often far from ideal because of strong currents and high surf, but its raw, natural scenery, relative seclusion, and romantic atmosphere make up for the lack of good swimming.

From the east end of Shipwrecks Beach (far left when facing the ocean), a trail leads up to the top of the hill. The trail continues for several miles, following oceanfront cliff tops, skirting the golf course and stables, and finally delivering you at the near end of Maha Ulepu Beach. One of the beach's main highlights is its proximity to Makawehi Point, a lithified dune. These cliffs can additionally be a popular area for locals to fish.

The west side's best family beach, Salt Pond sits just past Hanapepe where a natural rock barrier shelters a protected swimming area that stays calm when the open coast is rough. It is named for the adjacent ponds where Hawaiian families still harvest sea salt the traditional way.

It is a fully-equipped county park — lifeguard, restrooms, showers, shady picnic grills, and permitted camping — with easy snorkeling and steady afternoon wind that draws windsurfers. A genuinely useful stop on the long drive toward Waimea Canyon and the west end.

Right beside Poʻipu Beach Park, Brenneckeʻs is the South Shore's bodyboarding and bodysurfing headquarters — a compact pocket of sand with a consistent shorebreak and a board-only rule that keeps the surf zone fun and free of watercraft.

The waves are reliable enough to be a draw and small enough that confident swimmers and older kids can join in, though the shorebreak still demands respect. Lifeguards at the adjacent Poʻipu Beach Park cover the area, and food and rentals are steps away.

A wide half-mile of sand just north of Kapaʻa, Kealia is the East Side's go-to bodyboarding and surf beach, with an easy paved coastal path alongside that is popular for walking and cycling. Summer is the window when the shore mellows enough for swimming.

A lifeguard tower watches the north end, where a small breakwater calms the water. The rest of the beach takes the open swell head-on, so the shorebreak can be heavy — fine for sunbathing and watching the bodyboarders, riskier for a casual swim.

Where Kauai's west side turns hot, dry, and wide open, Kekaha unspools as a long, straight ribbon of white sand that runs for miles toward Polihale. It is the island's big-sky sunset beach — nothing between you and the open Pacific, with Niʻihau on the horizon.

There is no reef, so the swell hits the shore directly and the shorebreak can come up fast; calm days swim fine, but read the water first. It is an easy roadside stop on the way to Waimea Canyon, with a lifeguarded main section.

A scenic, low-key crescent north of Kapaʻa reached by a short walk down through former plantation land, Donkey Beach (Paliku) earned its name from the mules once pastured nearby. It is a pretty, often-quiet stretch backed by naupaka and ironwoods.

The coastal bike-and-walk path makes it an easy detour, but it is a look-and-stroll beach, not a swim: open exposure, a strong shorebreak, and rip currents with no lifeguard. Sea turtles sometimes rest on the sand — give them room.
