Molokini Crater
Molokini is an offshore snorkeling destination. Start with ocean conditions and your swimming ability, then compare the trip’s departure point, itinerary and support. A tour booking does not establish safe snorkeling conditions.
Molokini Crater — Quick Facts
- Access: Reach Molokini by boat. Commercial activities require a permit, and entry onto the islet is prohibited.
- Before booking: Check the operator’s current total price, meeting point, check-in time, cancellation terms and inclusions.
- Ocean conditions: Currents can be a problem outside the cove and may strengthen inside when afternoon winds rise. An early departure does not guarantee calm water.
- Swimming ability: Hawaii Ocean Safety advises snorkeling only if you are an experienced ocean swimmer. Snorkel with a buddy and stay out when conditions are unsuitable.
- Marine life: Look without touching, feeding or removing marine life or coral.
- Location: About three miles off Maui’s southwestern coast.
Molokini is the exposed southern rim of an extinct volcanic crater. The inner cove is its submerged floor, with coral, sand patches and basaltic boulders. The cove’s shape does not make it automatically safe for snorkeling.
The waters are protected as the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District, and the islet is a state seabird sanctuary. Entry onto the islet is prohibited. Follow the DLNR district rules and Hawaii Ocean Safety’s snorkeling precautions; do not touch or feed wildlife or remove coral.
Our existing Redline Rafting review is one place to start comparing Molokini trips. Check the operator’s current details before making a reservation.
Redline lists departures from Kīhei Boat Ramp and offers two-hour and five-hour snorkeling trips. Departure times and inclusions differ, so confirm the specific tour rather than relying on a general morning-to-noon schedule.
Read Redline’s current trip guidance for age, health and swimming considerations, check-in instructions and amenities. Its snorkeling locations may change with ocean conditions.
Choose the trip that fits
Ask about the actual time on the water, boat facilities, equipment, meals and swimming requirements. Confirm where the trip starts and finishes; do not assume every operator uses the same departure point.
Molokini is offshore and has no sand beach or facilities. Do not plan an island landing. Discuss any proposed offshore excursion with the operator and follow the district’s access rules.
Do not choose an outing on a promise of empty water, guaranteed visibility or wildlife sightings. Ask what happens if conditions prevent the planned snorkel stop, and read the cancellation terms before paying.
Before entering the water, listen to the crew’s briefing and assess conditions. Snorkel with a buddy and stay out if conditions are unsuitable or you are unsure of your ability.
