Kehena Black Sand Beach

Kehena is a black-sand beach beside Highway 137 in Puna. Plan a shore visit; do not swim or wade here. Stay well back from breaking waves and wet rocks, and follow posted warnings. For water activities, choose a beach with a lifeguard on duty and ask about current conditions.

Check posted access restrictions before descending. If the route or shoreline conditions are uncertain, skip the descent; do not climb around barriers or onto exposed cliffs.

Check posted parking and access restrictions along Highway 137. Park only where permitted, keep the road and driveways clear, and skip the stop if you cannot do so.

Bring drinking water and plan restroom stops before arriving. Pack out everything you bring. Respect nearby residents and other beachgoers. Keep noise down and ask permission before photographing people.

Before visiting, read the state shoreline-safety guidance and lifeguarded-beach advice.
