Hawaii plumeria season 2026 runs roughly May through October, with the heaviest bloom in summer. Walk through almost any Hawaiʻi neighborhood between June and September and you’ll smell it before you see it. A faint, sweet, slightly peachy scent in the late-afternoon air, coming almost always from a plumeria tree heavy with white or pink flowers blooming far above your head.

Plumerias are the flower most visitors picture when they think of a Hawaiʻi lei, and summer is when the trees do their loudest work. If you’re traveling to the islands between roughly May and October 2026, you’ll see them everywhere. This is where to find the best concentrations on the main visitor islands and the etiquette that keeps you on the right side of your hosts.

Most plumeria trees in Hawaiʻi belong to the species Plumeria rubra, which is deciduous in the islands’ subtropical climate. The trees drop their leaves in late fall, sit bare and stick-like through the cool months, push out new leaves in March and April, and begin flowering in earnest from May into October. The strongest bloom is typically mid-summer, when most home and public-garden trees flower at once. The other commonly seen species, Plumeria obtusa (the evergreen “Singapore” plumeria with glossy rounded leaves and pure-white flowers), holds its leaves year-round and tends to flower in lighter flushes from spring into fall. That seasonal arc is one reason a Hawaiʻi summer trip feels different from a December one. Flowering trees and mango branches heavy with fruit hit the same window. Plumeria is just the most visible piece.

Plumeria isn’t native to Hawaiʻi. The genus is native to the American tropics, from Mexico through the Caribbean, and the trees were brought to the islands in the mid-1800s. The traditional credit goes to Dr. Wilhelm Hillebrand, a German physician and botanist who lived in Honolulu from the 1850s to the 1870s and is widely credited with introducing plumeria to Hawaiʻi around 1860. Hawaiian lei traditions long predate plumeria. Ancient leis were made from native plants like maile vines, ʻilima blossoms, lehua, and ferns. Once plumeria arrived in the islands it spread fast and was easy to string, and by the 20th century the fragrant, durable plumeria flower had become the lei most visitors associate with Hawaiʻi. A common assumption worth correcting: plumeria is not the state flower of Hawaiʻi. That title belongs to the yellow hibiscus, Hibiscus brackenridgei, locally called maʻo hau hele. You don’t really need a plan to see plumerias in summer. They’re in every neighborhood. But a few specific places concentrate enough trees and varieties to be worth a deliberate visit.

Foster Botanical Garden (50 N. Vineyard Blvd., Honolulu) is the original Hillebrand site, with mature historic plumeria specimens that are good to walk under. Koko Crater Botanical Garden (7491 Kokonani Street, Honolulu) is a dry-climate botanical garden inside the Koko Crater rim. The plumeria grove is the showpiece, with dozens of cultivars side by side. Best visited in early morning before the crater bowl heats up. Admission is free (donations welcome) and the garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kāneʻohe, Wahiawā Botanical Garden in central Oʻahu, and Lyon Arboretum at the back of Mānoa Valley all have plumerias mixed into broader tropical-plant collections. Maui Tropical Plantation (1670 Honoapiʻilani Hwy, Wailuku) is a working plantation and gardens with a small flower-tunnel walk that includes plumerias. Free to walk the grounds; tours and the tram are paid add-ons. (Maui Tropical Plantation)

Kula Botanical Garden (638 Kekaulike Ave., Upcountry Maui) is a small, family-run upcountry garden with mature plumeria trees set into a broader tropical collection. Open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission $10 for adults, $3 for children 6-12. (Kula Botanical Garden)

Outside formal gardens, drive any residential road in Kīhei or Kula in late summer and you’ll find plumeria trees in nearly every yard. The cardinal rule: look and photograph all you like, but don’t pick from anyone’s tree. More on that below.

The Big Island is wetter on the east (Hilo) side and drier on the west (Kona) side, and plumerias do best in the warmer, drier zones. Hawaiʻi Tropical Bioreserve & Garden (formerly Hawaiʻi Tropical Botanical Garden) on Onomea Bay just north of Hilo has plumerias in its tropical collection, though the rainforest setting means the orchid and heliconia displays usually steal the show. For a more plumeria-forward visit, the residential and resort landscaping along the Kohala Coast is dense with mature plumeria trees that flower heavily through summer. From Mauna Lani down to Waikoloa Beach, the resort drives are worth a slow afternoon loop with the windows down.

National Tropical Botanical Garden runs three Kauaʻi gardens: McBryde, Allerton, and Limahuli. All three include plumerias in their tropical-plant displays. Allerton, on the south shore, has the most landscape-integrated plumerias and is set up for a guided tour through historic plantings. The single most important thing for visitors to know about plumeria season: the trees you see in front yards and along sidewalks belong to the people who live there. Worth saying clearly because it’s the most common visitor misunderstanding around plumerias.

Plumeria is so abundant that it can feel like wild, free-for-the-taking flora. It isn’t. Almost every flowering tree you see in a residential neighborhood was planted, watered, and grown by a homeowner who is keeping the flowers for their own family’s use: a graduation lei, a school May Day program, a wedding, a funeral. Picking from someone’s tree without permission is, depending on the household, anything from a minor irritation to a real theft.

Public botanical gardens generally don’t allow picking either, and many also restrict taking fallen flowers from the ground. Read the posted signs and ask staff before pocketing anything. Hotel grounds vary too: some properties quietly encourage guests to take fallen blossoms heading for the compost pile, others don’t. The easy move is to ask the front desk where you’re staying.

A small handful of fallen plumerias in a hotel water glass is one of the more memorable, free souvenirs a Hawaiʻi trip offers, but only if it’s allowed where you’re staying. Confirm before you pick up.

A few practical notes if you’re hoping for photographs that look like more than the standard tourist phone snap:

Time of day matters more than camera quality. Plumerias photograph best in the soft, low-angle light of the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. Midday sun, especially in summer, blows out the white and yellow flowers and flattens the colors of the pink and red varieties.

Get under the tree, looking up. A plumeria tree photographed from below, branches reaching across a blue sky, is a much more interesting frame than a flower picked off the ground and held in your hand. Foster Botanical Garden’s larger heritage trees are good for this.

Single-flower photos work better with shade. If you do photograph a fallen flower in your hand or on a railing, move into open shade. Soft, even light is what makes plumeria petal colors look like themselves rather than washed-out tourist photos.

Bring a small towel. Plumeria sap is a milky white latex that drips when stems are broken. It’s mildly irritating to skin and will stain clothing. Keep it away from your eyes. If you’ve come into a small handful of fresh-fallen plumerias (from your hotel’s lawn with permission, or a friend’s yard), you have options:

A glass of water on the nightstand. A few flowers floating in a clear glass perfumes a small hotel room for an evening, and the room comfort scale of a Hawaiʻi summer trip goes up a notch. Replace the flowers each morning. The fragrance fades within a day or so.

A simple lei for yourself. The traditional Hawaiian plumeria lei is strung on cotton string with a long needle, threading the needle through the center of each flower so the petals splay forward. It’s not hard, but it takes a generous pile of flowers and a quiet hour to do well. Many resorts run lei-making classes for guests; check with your concierge or activities desk for the schedule.

Don’t ship them home. Cut plumeria flowers won’t survive a flight to the mainland with any structural integrity, and bringing them through agricultural inspection is an unnecessary headache. The fragrance is the part you remember anyway, and the part you can’t pack.

Plumeria cuttings (stick-like sections of branch that root readily once planted) can legally leave Hawaiʻi for the mainland after USDA inspection. Buy only from a nursery that packages cuttings for USDA inspection, with the paperwork already prepared. Allow extra time at the airport: the inspection counter is separate from check-in and the line moves at its own pace. Once home, cuttings can be rooted in a warm, well-drained pot and grown indoors in winter and outside in summer in most U.S. climates.

Once they bloom, the smell will pull a Hawaiʻi summer back into your living room every season for the rest of the plant’s life.

None of the gardens above are full-day commitments. The Oʻahu pair (Foster Botanical and Koko Crater) makes a logical morning loop: Foster early, then over to Koko Crater Botanical Garden by mid-morning, with Hanauma Bay or a Hawaiʻi Kai lunch on the way back. The Big Island Kohala Coast plumeria drive is more of a windows-down detour on the way to a beach than a destination.
