Large resorts combine lodging with pools, restaurants, spas, and organized activities, making them useful for travelers who want more services on the property. Mandatory resort fees and parking can add substantially to the advertised room rate.

Condo Hotel

Kitchenette More Space Hotel Amenities

Individual condo units inside a hotel-managed building — more square footage, a kitchenette or full kitchen, and usually a separate living room. Great for families and couples who want resort amenities (pools, concierge) without eating out every meal. Ko Olina Beach Club and the Aston Waikiki corridor are the classic examples on Oahu. On the neighbor islands, HawaiiGaga.com has cataloged legally licensed condo rentals across Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island since 2008 — over 10,000 listings, with beachfront and oceanview classifications verified by hand.

Vacation Rental

Varies by size and location
Full Kitchen 2+ Bedrooms Local Neighborhood

A house or apartment rented directly — typically through Vrbo or Airbnb. The full kitchen cuts food costs significantly; two or three bedrooms can make this an economical option for families and groups. Minimum-stay rules vary by property, season, and county. Before booking, confirm the listing's registration details, cancellation terms, and full price.

Boutique Hotel

Local Character Smaller Scale Curated Design

Independent and small-brand hotels with a distinct point of view. They often trade the sprawling amenity list of a large resort for a smaller footprint, more individual design, and a neighborhood-oriented setting. Compare the location and included amenities with similarly priced chain hotels.

B&B & Inn

Budget to premium
Breakfast Included Local Owners Small Scale

Owner-operated guesthouses offer a smaller-scale stay and more direct contact with local hosts. Breakfast may be included, but amenities, minimum stays, and check-in arrangements vary widely. Inventory is limited compared with hotels, so compare policies and book early for busy travel periods.

Budget Hotel & Hostel

Lower-cost tier
Low Cost Central Location Basics Covered

Hawaii's lower-cost lodging inventory is limited. Modest hotels and shared-room hostels are easiest to find around major visitor areas, while neighbor-island choices can be sparse. Compare the full trip cost: a cheaper room may require a rental car, while a property with a kitchen can reduce meal spending.

What to Expect by Island

The lodging market on each island is meaningfully different.

Oʻahu

Oʻahu offers a broad lodging range, with much of the hotel inventory concentrated in Waikīkī. Outside the main hotel districts, confirm that any short-term rental follows current county rules. Ko Olina provides a planned resort alternative on the island's west side.

Search Oʻahu stays

Maui

Most Maui resorts cluster in West Maui around Kāʻanapali and Kapalua or in South Maui around Wailea and Kīhei. Upcountry inns and smaller stays offer a different base. Use the live rate table for current pricing and verify vacation-rental eligibility before booking.

Search Maui stays

Big Island

The Kohala Coast is the island's main luxury-resort corridor, while Kona, Hilo, and Volcano offer different mixes of hotels, inns, and rentals. If Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is a trip priority, a base near Volcano or Hilo reduces repeated cross-island driving from Kona.

Search Big Island stays

Kauaʻi

Poipū on the South Shore and Princeville on the North Shore anchor Kauaʻi's main resort areas. Elsewhere, the mix shifts toward smaller hotels, inns, and vacation rentals. Lower-cost inventory is limited, so compare areas and book earlier for busy travel periods.

Before You Book

Watch mandatory resort fees

Many Hawaii resorts add a mandatory daily resort or destination fee. The amount and what it covers vary by property, and parking may be separate. Compare the final price, not only the displayed room rate.

Vacation rental taxes add up

State transient accommodations tax, general excise tax, and county TAT may apply to a Hawaii vacation rental. Review the itemized taxes and fees in the final booking total, and consult the Hawaii Department of Taxation's rental-tax guidance for current rates and requirements.

Book neighbor islands early

Neighbor-island lodging inventory is smaller than Oʻahu's, and the most appealing choices can disappear early during busy travel periods. Start comparing well ahead of the trip, especially when your dates or preferred area are inflexible.

Credit card hotel perks

Hotel loyalty programs and premium-card booking programs can change the value of a stay through points, breakfast, property credits, or late checkout when offered. Compare those benefits with the direct cash rate and confirm the terms for the exact property and dates.
