With the same vehicle and gas price, shortening a rental from seven days to four changes the calculator’s fuel line only if the modeled miles change too. The Light preset assumes 40 miles per day, so fewer days means fewer miles, and that is where an apparent saving comes from. If your planned drives stay the same, the fuel estimate stays the same.
Calculate the fuel
The Hawaii Car Rental Cost Calculator multiplies miles per day by rental days to get total miles. It divides that total by the class mpg to get gallons, then multiplies gallons by the island gas input. For Compact, the modeling input is 30 mpg, a planning figure rather than a guarantee of any real vehicle’s economy.
This example freezes gasoline at $5.593 a gallon and the Compact model at 30 mpg. The AAA Hawaii page, dated October 26, 2026, listed $5.5932 for Honolulu in its Yesterday Avg. row, supporting the rounded October 25 price used here. This is not today’s price, a pump price, a forecast, or a whole-rental total. Later tool results can differ as the gas input updates.
To reproduce the comparison, select Oahu, October, Compact. The formula is distance divided by 30, times 5.593.
| Rental days | Miles/day | Total miles | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 40 | 280 | $52 |
| 4 | 40 | 160 | $30 |
| 4 | 70 | 280 | $52 |
The photo is illustrative; calculations use the Compact model at 30 mpg.
The $22 mileage difference
Seven days at the 40-mile preset models 280 miles, or about 9.33 gallons, which the tool rounds to $52. Four days at the same preset models 160 miles, about 5.33 gallons, rounded to $30. The $22 difference comes from 120 fewer modeled miles.
Keep the 280 miles and spread them over four days, and the input becomes 70 miles per day. Gallons return to 9.33 and the rounded fuel figure returns to $52. The rental got shorter; the fuel estimate did not.
Nothing here says a particular route is 280 miles, or that daily driving is uniform. The numbers were chosen for the arithmetic, not as a travel schedule.
Plan the days without a car as carefully as the drives you keep.
Keep your planned miles
Decide which drives you actually want first, then add up the distance. If you keep those drives and shorten the rental, divide the total by the new number of days and enter that custom miles-per-day figure instead of a preset.
If the shorter rental really removes driving from your plan, lower the mileage to match. Not every itinerary is 280 miles.
Check what sits outside the rental window. Get separate quotes for transport to collect and return the vehicle, airport trips outside the rental, and parking, alongside the all-in rental price for your exact dates. Compare these quotes before deciding whether fewer rental days save money.
Car-free days can mean extra planning or other transport fares. The guide to getting around Hawaii without a car covers the options. For a current gas input, see the gas prices page before rerunning the tool.
Compare whole transport plans against each other, not one lower calculator total against another.
