Once a year the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului empties its galleries, tents its parking lot, and hands the whole campus over to Maui small business. The Made in Maui County Festival is what happens next — a two-day, juried gathering of over 140 makers, farmers, and food producers from Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, all of it under one roof for one weekend in early November.

If you have never planned a Hawaiʻi trip around a shopping event, this is the one to make the exception for. Every vendor is required to source, grow, or make their product in Maui County, so what you take home is not a T-shirt with a state name printed on it in Los Angeles. It is honey from a bee yard in Kula, a koa cutting board from an Upcountry shop, macadamia brittle from a Haʻikū kitchen, or a shirt block-printed in Wailuku. The festival is the shortest path to that shelf that exists.

The festival traditionally lands on the first Friday and Saturday of November at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Kahului Beach Road. For the 2026 edition, that puts it on the calendar around Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7, 2026. The official festival site posts confirmed dates, hours, and the vendor roster as the event nears, so use this as a planning anchor and verify the specifics a few weeks out.

Recent years have run a two-session format: a ticketed Friday session — usually branded as an Exclusive Shopping Day or preview event with light bites, drinks, and first pick of inventory — followed by a general admission day on Saturday with a small entry fee (recent editions have run about $7, kids 12 and under free). Exact hours have shifted year to year; the 2023 festival, for example, ran Friday in the afternoon and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Confirm both on the official schedule page before you build your day around it.

The MACC sits at 1 Cameron Way in Kahului, roughly a five-to-ten-minute drive from Kahului Airport and about ten minutes from Wailuku. If you are staying in Kīhei plan on 20 to 25 minutes, and from Wailea about 30. From West Maui — Kāʻanapali, Kapalua — plan closer to an hour depending on the day. The word "juried" does a lot of work here. Every vendor applies through the Maui Chamber of Commerce, which co-produces the festival with the County of Maui's Office of Economic Development. Applicants have to show that their product is made, grown, packaged, or substantially transformed in Maui County. That county-of-origin standard is what turns the room from a generic craft fair into something a visitor actually cannot recreate at a Target back home.

The vendor mix leans heavily toward food and beverage — Maui-grown coffee, small-batch honey, chocolate makers, cottage bakers, kombucha and shrub producers, farmers with a table full of citrus and lilikoʻi. The rest runs through fashion, jewelry, home goods, wood, ceramics, body care, and Hawaiian-language-forward gift items. Prices skew mid — a jar of honey runs under $10, a body-care set is often in the $20s, printed shirts land in the $60s, and serious koa pieces climb into the hundreds — but the trade-off is that you are buying directly from the maker at margins that let the maker keep making.

The other thing you get here that you cannot get online is context. Ask the beekeeper which flowers the bees were on that season and you will get a five-minute answer that changes how the honey tastes. The kalo farmer will tell you which valley the tubers came from and why that matters. This is not the pitch. This is the whole point.

Cash and small bills. Most vendors take card and mobile payments now, but a handful still run cash-only and the smaller vendors often prefer it. The MACC has an ATM in the main lobby as a fallback, but the line for it on festival day gets long. Pull cash before you drive in.

A reusable bag or two. Maui County's plastic bag reduction ordinance means single-use plastic bags are effectively out at checkout across the island, and the festival leans into a bring-your-own-bag culture regardless. A cloth tote from any grocery store solves this. A small cooler in the car for perishables (butter mochi, chocolates, jarred sauces) is a bonus if you are staying more than a few miles out.

An eating strategy. Between the food-vendor booths and the demo kitchen, you can graze your way through lunch. Chefs and popular Maui restaurants have historically done live cooking demos on the main stage — check the official schedule page once the lineup posts. Bring water. The MACC is well-shaded but early November on Central Maui still runs warm.

Comfortable shoes. The MACC has an outdoor courtyard, an indoor exhibit hall, and a set of tented paths in between. You will cover more ground than you think.

Perishables and seasonal produce. Anything that is only good this trip — a jar of honey, small-batch chocolates, mac nut brittle, kalo chips, jarred lilikoʻi curd. These sell out first. Circle back for them at the top of the day, not the end.

Coffee. Maui-grown coffee is a small category compared to Kona but the quality is real. The Big Island's Kona belt gets most of the coverage; Maui growers deserve a shelf next to it. A pound of single-origin Maui coffee is a legit gift.

Something that requires the person to have been there. A koa serving board, a handmade lei-po'o wire, a printed Maui-mountain map, a specific bottle of liliko'i vinegar. The kind of thing a friend will pick up in their kitchen and ask about. That is the piece worth spending on.

Body care from a farm-direct brand. Lotion and salt scrubs and lip balms from small Maui producers are a step above what shows up in a resort gift shop. They also travel well and do not risk melting in the car.

Two days is a lot of festival, so most visitors treat it as an anchor and build a normal Maui trip around it. A workable shape: arrive Wednesday or Thursday, ease into Maui with a beach day, hit the festival on Friday or Saturday morning, and use Sunday for a bigger swing — Haleakalā or the Road to Hana depending on where your lodging is. Early November is one of the quieter tourist windows on Maui, sitting between summer break and the Thanksgiving surge, so you get real festival access without paying peak rates.

Central Maui works well as a base for festival weekend. Kahului has functional airport-adjacent hotels and Wailuku has a couple of small-inn options that put you close to the venue. If you are combining with a longer stay, most visitors still base in Kīhei, Wailea, or Kāʻanapali and drive in — that's the norm on Maui.

The MACC has real parking, but on festival Saturday the main lot fills. The two practical moves: arrive early and take a spot near the courtyard entrance, or use the free overflow parking at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College across Kaʻahumanu Avenue and walk over. Rideshare drops at the main entrance on Cameron Way and works fine for the Friday session when volume is lower. Uber and Lyft coverage on Central Maui is workable but not instant — build in a short wait for a pickup at the end of the day.

Not a Maui County Fair — that is a separate event held at War Memorial Complex in Wailuku in early October, with carnival rides, livestock, and community food booths. Is a shopping festival really worth building a Maui weekend around? For most travelers, no — you would not fly to Hawaiʻi for a craft fair. But if you are already planning a Maui trip in the September-through-November shoulder window, or you have visited Maui before and want a different kind of afternoon than a beach or a hike, this is one of the few days in the year where a concentrated slice of the island's small-business economy is under one roof and you can walk it in an afternoon. It is also one of the few visitor-facing events that consistently gets called out as feeling less like a tourist product and more like a local one.
