Big Island Stargazing Tours

If you’re looking for the best stargazing in the world, look no further than Big Island. Take a guided tour of the massive Mauna Kea- the world’s tallest mountain from base to summit- and be prepared to be amazed. Learn about its significance to native Hawaiians, astronomers, and visitors from around the world. Gaze in wonder as the sun sinks below the horizon and the sky sparkles and shares its magic with you- truly awe-inspiring!

Mauna Kea Access Update (March 2026)

In March 2026, a severe Kona low brought heavy snow and 100+ mph winds to Mauna Kea, causing significant road damage to the summit access road. Road closures and restricted access may be in effect. Check the Mauna Kea Weather Center (mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu) for real-time road conditions before planning any summit visit.

Visitor Information Station (VIS): Open daily 9 AM – 9 PM at the 9,200-foot elevation level. The VIS offers stargazing programs and is accessible even when the summit road is closed above that point.

Safety: Pregnant women and children under 13 should not go above the VIS due to the high altitude and low oxygen levels.
