Alan Wong won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific Northwest in 1996. He was also one of the 12 chefs who founded Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine in 1991. The movement put fresh island ingredients and Hawaiʻi’s layered food traditions on the same plate.

Wong’s King Street restaurant opened in 1995. It closed in 2020 during the pandemic after more than 25 years. During that run, it became a ten-time Hale ʻĀina Restaurant of the Year winner. Gourmet ranked it No. 6 in America’s Best 50 Restaurants in 2001 and No. 8 in 2006, according to Wong’s official biography.
