Manapua is Hawaii’s version of char siu bao — a steamed or baked bun, usually filled with BBQ pork, that Chinese immigrants brought to the islands in the 1800s. It stuck. Hard. You’ll find them at bakeries, lunch spots, and plate lunch windows across every island, typically priced around $2–4 per bun. Cheap, filling, and genuinely good when you find the right spot.

On Oahu, three spots anchor the conversation. Royal Kitchen in Chinatown is one of the most recognized names in the state — long lines, consistent quality, the full range of fillings. Char Hung Sut, also in Honolulu, has been doing this for decades and has the kind of reputation that doesn’t need marketing.
