Where to Find the Best Manapua in Hawaii

Manapua is Hawaii’s version of char siu bao — a steamed or baked bun, usually filled with BBQ pork, that Chinese immigrants brought to the islands in the 1800s. It stuck. Hard. You’ll find them at bakeries, lunch spots, and plate lunch windows across every island, typically priced around $2–4 per bun. Cheap, filling, and genuinely good when you find the right spot.

On Oahu, three spots anchor the conversation. Royal Kitchen in Chinatown is one of the most recognized names in the state — long lines, consistent quality, the full range of fillings. Char Hung Sut, also in Honolulu, has been doing this for decades and has the kind of reputation that doesn’t need marketing. Libby Manapua Shop in Kalihi is a neighborhood staple — less famous than the others, more beloved by the people who actually live nearby.

The other islands have their own scenes. Fewer options, but the good ones are worth tracking down. Here’s where to go on each island.

What Makes a Great Manapua?

The dough has to be right first. Soft, slightly sweet, not gummy. The filling needs to be seasoned well — char siu is traditional, but curry chicken, kalua pork, and sweet black bean are all legitimate. Steamed manapua is the classic; baked gives you a golden exterior with more texture. Both are worth trying. A great manapua doesn’t need a side of anything — it’s complete on its own.

Best Locations for Manapua on Each Island

Manapua isn’t just a blatantly delectable food. It’s a unique piece of history. Its deep connection to Chinese culture is one more testament to how globally significant and connected Hawaiian history and culture itself is. Tasting it while you visit is to participate, in your own momentary way, in this marvelous phenomenon; particularly so if you make the encouraged choice to do so at a prized local venue.

As always, eating local food at the local spots is a brilliant opportunity for connection. We always recommend venturing in this direction; few places are as rewarding as Hawaii when one does so.
