A Hawaiʻi sunrise is not like a mainland sunrise. The trade winds are usually just starting, the tourists are still asleep, and on most of the islands you’ll have the first thirty minutes of light almost entirely to yourself. Earn one properly — by hiking into position instead of rolling out of a rental car — and the whole trip recalibrates. It’s one of those small acts of effort that somehow makes everything that follows hit harder.

This guide is four hikes — one per island — that are genuinely worth setting an alarm for, plus a handful of runner-ups and one “please do not do this” warning. All four are doable by average hikers in reasonable shape. None of them require a guide. All of them reward you for showing up in the dark.

Check sunrise time the night before. Hawaiʻi sunrise drifts considerably across the year — earliest in late spring and early summer, latest in early winter. Plan to be in position at least 20 minutes before the official sunrise time, because first light starts well before the sun actually clears the horizon.

Bring a real flashlight or headlamp. Your phone’s flashlight is not a real flashlight. Trail footing in the pre-dawn dark is the #1 way to roll an ankle on an otherwise easy hike. Any cheap REI or Amazon headlamp will pay for itself in one morning — a basic rechargeable headlamp is under $25 and weighs nothing.

Dress warmer than you’d expect. At sea level the pre-dawn temperature is usually in the high 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, which is fine in a t-shirt once you’re moving. At the Haleakalā summit it can drop into the 30s or low 40s Fahrenheit with wind chill. A light fleece or packable jacket is the move — even on a “I’m going to Hawaiʻi” trip where packing warm layers feels absurd.

Tell somebody where you’re going. The trails in this article are popular, but “popular” doesn’t help you at 4:30 a.m. when you’re the only car in the lot. Text a friend or your hotel concierge your plan and your expected return time.

Respect the neighbors. Two of the four hikes below start in residential neighborhoods where street parking is tight, tempers are short, and the residents are absolutely not impressed by visitors at 5 a.m. with slamming car doors. Park where signs say you can park, whisper, and never block a driveway. Local frustration with predawn sunrise-hike traffic is real and it is earned.

The hike: About 1.7 miles round-trip, roughly 500 feet of gain. Start-to-pillbox is 20–30 minutes at a brisk pace, longer if the dirt is wet and slick. The official trail name is the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail — “Lanikai Pillbox” is the nickname everyone actually uses, because the trail ends at two concrete World War II observation bunkers perched on the ridge above the Mokulua Islands.

Why it’s the Oʻahu pick: The view east over the Mokes (as locals call the two small offshore islands) at first light is one of the most photographed sunrises in Hawaiʻi for good reason. You’re high enough to see the curve of Lanikai and Kailua bays, low enough that the trail is manageable in the dark, and the geometry of the two pillboxes frames the sunrise like an accidental amphitheater.

Trailhead: The hike starts in the Lanikai residential neighborhood off Kaʻelepulu Drive in Kailua, near the Mid-Pacific Country Club. There is no official parking lot — you park on the residential street, walk up to the trailhead sign, and start climbing. Do not park in the country club lot, do not block driveways, and do not be the predawn tourist who ruins it for the next one. This trailhead is a flashpoint in the local “tourists are destroying our neighborhood” conversation — be an exceptionally quiet, respectful visitor.

Get there: Plan to be at the trailhead 60 minutes before sunrise. The hike up is quick, but you want time to pick a spot, catch your breath, and actually experience first light instead of sprinting for it. Allow 30–40 minutes for the drive from Waikīkī via the Pali Highway.

Diamond Head State Monument is the famous one, and it can work for sunrise — but only if you pre-book. Out-of-state visitors now need a timed entry reservation through the state parks system, and the gate opens at 6 a.m. That matters because Hawaiʻi sunrise is earlier in summer than in winter: on summer dates when the sun is up well before 6, the park gate simply opens too late to catch first light. On shorter-day winter dates, the 6 a.m. opening lines up much better with actual sunrise and Diamond Head becomes a genuinely excellent dawn pick.

Rule of thumb: if you’re visiting in the darker months (roughly November through February), Diamond Head is fantastic — the crater rim frames the sun beautifully and the view west over Waikīkī is a completely different angle than Lanikai. If you’re visiting in the summer, stick with Lanikai Pillbox and do Diamond Head for a daytime hike instead.

One more Oʻahu option: Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail on the southeastern corner of the island is a paved 1.25-mile walk up to the lighthouse overlook, and is a popular sunrise spot in its own right. It’s easier footing than Lanikai in the dark, open 7 days a week with free parking, and the view is directly into the rising sun over the ocean. Less photogenic than Lanikai, much more accessible, and a better pick for anyone hiking with kids or bad knees.

The setup: Haleakalā National Park’s summit sunrise is the single most famous dawn view in the Pacific, and for good reason — you’re standing on top of a 10,023-foot shield volcano that last erupted roughly 500 years ago, looking out across a crater the size of Manhattan, watching the sun come up above the clouds. But it requires planning, driving skill, and warm clothes, and you need to understand what you’re signing up for.

The permit (critical): Summit sunrise is by advance reservation only between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Reservations open up on Recreation.gov 60 days in advance and frequently sell out — book as soon as you know your dates. Reservations cost a small per-vehicle fee plus the Haleakalā National Park entrance fee. The drive: From Kahului or Lahaina, give yourself roughly 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the summit — longer than most people expect. The route is paved the whole way but climbs from sea level to over 10,000 feet in about 35 miles of switchbacks, with almost no gas stations or services above Kula. Fill up the tank the night before. The cold: I cannot stress this enough. Summit temperatures at sunrise in any month can drop into the 30s or 40s Fahrenheit, with wind chill pushing it lower. The park service flat-out recommends bringing a warm jacket, long pants, a hat, and closed-toe shoes. People show up in shorts and flip-flops every morning and every morning somebody is miserable about it. Don’t be that person.

Is it a “hike”? Not really — it’s a drive-to viewpoint. But you can make it one: the Pā Kaʻoao (White Hill) trail is a short, easy 0.4-mile round-trip paved walk from the visitor center to a higher cinder-cone viewpoint above the crowd. Walk it in the dark with a headlamp, find a spot along the railing, and watch sunrise from there. That’s the “earned” version of a Haleakalā summit sunrise and it is worth the extra ten minutes.

If the Haleakalā reservation is sold out or the predawn drive from your hotel feels insane, Lahaina Pali Trail on West Maui is the alternate pick. This is a historic 5-mile one-way trail over the Kealaloloa Ridge between Māʻalaea and Ukumehame, originally a Hawaiian footpath and later a supply route for the whaling-era port of Lahaina. Most visitors hike it from the Māʻalaea (east) end for a partial out-and-back — about 1.5 miles up gets you to a viewpoint that catches sunrise across the isthmus toward Haleakalā.

Trailhead is on the ocean side of Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30), just west of the Māʻalaea Harbor turnoff. The trail is fully exposed — no shade, no water — so hike up in the cool predawn, turn around at the viewpoint, and be back at the car by 8 a.m. before it gets hot. This is a much quieter sunrise than Haleakalā, with zero crowds and no permit.

The hike: The Pololū Valley Lookout itself is a drive-up, not a hike — but the short trail down into Pololū Valley (about 1 mile round-trip, ~400 feet of descent and climb back out) is one of the best sunrise walks on the Big Island. Start at the end-of-the-road lookout at the northern terminus of Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270), in the Kohala district above Kapaʻau.

Why Pololū: You’re on the north-facing coast of the Big Island, looking east down a sequence of seven ridgeline valleys that march away toward Waipiʻo. First light comes up behind the ridges and lights the black-sand beach at the valley floor from the opposite direction most visitors experience it. If you’ve only seen Pololū in midday tourist photos, the predawn version of this view will genuinely surprise you.

Trailhead timing: From the Kona side, Pololū is about 1 hour 45 minutes away — too far for most Kona-based travelers to do as a sunrise trip. This is the sunrise hike for visitors staying on the Kohala Coast (Mauna Lani, Waikoloa, Hāpuna) or on the Hilo/Hāmākua side. Coming from Waimea it’s about 45 minutes.

Access note: Beach-level access at the bottom of Pololū Valley has been restricted at various points in recent years, and the current status can change without much notice. Confirm before you go by checking our trail status tracker and the Hawaiʻi DLNR site. Even when the beach itself is closed, the upper trail and the lookout are spectacular at first light — you can take the sunrise from a turn on the trail without ever needing to descend to sand level.

This isn’t a hike — it’s a stroll — but if you’re staying in Hilo, the easiest sunrise on the Big Island is a 15-minute walk through Liliʻuokalani Gardens on Banyan Drive, across the footbridge to Coconut Island (Moku Ola), and out onto the little lava-rock point. You’re looking directly east across Hilo Bay, and the sun comes up over the Pacific with zero obstruction. There’s no entry fee, no parking hassle, and the Edo-style gardens themselves — originally dedicated in the early 20th century and widely regarded as one of the most significant Japanese gardens in Hawaiʻi — are worth wandering in their own right.

The other option is Mauna Kea itself, but I want to be direct about this: Mauna Kea is famous for sunset, not sunrise, and the overnight drive up to the 13,803-foot summit area in the dark is something I would not recommend for any casual visitor. The road to the Visitor Information Station (VIS) is paved, but beyond the VIS — past the 4WD ranger checkpoint — the first stretch is unpaved dirt road before transitioning back to pavement near the summit. Both sections require 4WD low range, and rental-car companies routinely prohibit their vehicles above the VIS. Add high altitude (13,803 feet), sudden weather, and icy conditions in any season, and it’s genuinely dangerous for drivers without mountain experience. If you want to experience Mauna Kea, do a sunset trip with a commercial operator who handles the driving. Sunrise on Mauna Kea is for people with mountain training and a specific reason to be up there.

The hike: About 3.5 miles round-trip, 1,000+ feet of elevation gain, roughly 75–90 minutes one way for most hikers. The Nounou Mountain East Trail — better known as the Sleeping Giant — climbs the ridge of the 1,241-foot peak that, from the east side of Kauaʻi, looks like a man lying on his back. (The peak is the “forehead,” the chest, belly, and knees make up the rest of the ridge.) From the top, you look east directly into the sunrise over the Pacific, and west toward the cloud-catching peaks of the interior.

Trailhead: Haleilio Road in Wailua Homesteads, off Kuamoʻo Road. The trail is signed and there’s a small parking area at the base. This is a more serious hike than Lanikai Pillbox — more elevation, longer climb, footing gets rocky near the top — so give yourself more time. Plan to start hiking 90 minutes before sunrise to be comfortable at the summit before first light.

The final scramble: The very top requires a short rocky scramble. Don’t push it in the dark if you’re not confident on your feet — there’s a picnic-area plateau just below the summit that offers a nearly identical view without the exposure. Many hikers stop there and it’s the smart call at predawn.

Why Nounou: Kauaʻi doesn’t have a single famous sunrise hike the way Maui has Haleakalā, and that’s actually part of the charm. This trail is popular with local runners and weekend hikers, you’ll almost certainly share the summit with two or three other people at most, and the light on the east-shore coast at dawn is spectacular.

On the south shore, Shipwreck Beach in Poʻipū is the alternate Kauaʻi sunrise spot for anyone not up for the Sleeping Giant climb. Shipwreck sits next to the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Resort, and there is free public shoreline access — follow the posted public-access signage near the resort rather than using the hotel’s guest parking. Walk down to the sand before first light; the lithified cliffs at the east end of the beach mark the start of the Māhāʻulepu Heritage Trail, an easy coastal walk of a couple of miles along some of the most dramatic scenery on the south shore. Walk out 10–15 minutes, pick a spot on the cliffs, and watch the sun come up over the water.

This is maybe the easiest sunrise in Hawaiʻi — flat, short, no permit, plenty of parking — and the south-shore angle means you’re catching the sun coming up over the open Pacific instead of a ridge. Great for families, anyone with knee issues, or anyone who decided the night before that a sunrise hike sounded romantic and now doesn’t want to climb 1,000 feet to earn it.

Every year a few visitors get the idea of hiking into the Kalalau Trail on Kauaʻi’s Nā Pali Coast before dawn to catch sunrise at Hanakāpīʻai Beach. Do not do this. The Kalalau Trail is one of the most dangerous hikes in Hawaiʻi — narrow, exposed cliffside footing, with stream crossings that flash-flood without warning. Hiking it in the dark, in a rush, with a Recreation.gov reservation and a predawn headlamp, is how people get hurt. Hike Kalalau in full daylight, with time to spare, or don’t hike it at all. The reopening status of the trail is also something we track on our trail status page — the Hāʻena State Park permit system and stream conditions change often.

Similar caution applies to the upper slopes of Mauna Kea (Big Island) and anywhere on Mauna Loa. These are high-altitude, serious-mountain environments and they are not sunrise-hike candidates for casual visitors. Stick with the four trails above and your sunrise morning will be great.

Light fleece or packable jacket — all four trails are colder before sunrise than you think, and Haleakalā is genuinely cold.

Closed-toe hiking shoes — Lanikai Pillbox and Sleeping Giant have rocky or slick footing. Flip-flops are a hospital visit waiting to happen.

Water bottle — even a “short” hike deserves water in Hawaiʻi.

A snack or breakfast bar — you’ve been up for two hours by the time you’re back at the car. Future-you will appreciate it.

Phone charger in the car — predawn photo mode eats battery fast.
