Hāʻena is not a place to improvise at the trailhead. Nonresidents need an advance reservation to enter Hāʻena State Park, and the permission needed changes with how far you plan to hike. Start with the reservation, then check the official park notice again before driving north.
Storms, high streams, trail work, and emergency closures can change access after you book. Hawaii Guide does not repeat a temporary open-or-closed roster here; use State Parks notices and Hawaii travel alerts for the day-of decision.
