Hawaiʻi’s bakery scene is quietly one of the best in the country, and almost no visitor knows it. Portuguese sweetbread from the 1800s whaling days, Japanese manju from plantation-era immigration, French sourdough from modern craft bakers, haupia cream pies invented in roadside shacks, and Chinese-style crispy buns that somehow taste nothing like what you get in a mainland Chinese bakery. The result is a local pastry culture that is genuinely specific to these islands — shaped by a century of sugar plantations, Portuguese and Japanese and Chinese immigration, and the way aunties and grandmothers adapted what they knew to what grew here.

This is a shortlist of the bakeries I actually send people to. One or two per island, chosen for a combination of: (a) the product is excellent, (b) the place is open and reliable, (c) it’s worth a genuine detour rather than just “if you happen to be there.” If you only have time for one bakery stop per island, pick from this list.

The thing to order: Coco Puffs — a chocolate-cream-filled puff pastry topped with a thick cap of Chantilly frosting. Nothing to do with the breakfast cereal. The bakery sells thousands a day and has for decades. Pipe them directly into your face.

Where: The original location at 515 N Kuakini Street in Honolulu is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is the one to visit for the full diner-plus-bakery-counter experience. There are additional locations at 580 N Nimitz Highway, inside Macy’s at Ala Moana Center (3rd floor, 1450 Ala Moana Blvd), and at the International Market Place in Waikīkī (3rd floor, 2330 Kalākaua Ave) — convenient if you’re staying in Waikīkī and don’t want to drive.

Beyond the coco puffs: Butter rolls, poi mochi donuts, green tea matcha puffs, and a full local-style diner menu (loco moco, oxtail soup, pancakes bigger than your head). The Kuakini location is a Honolulu institution that feels unchanged since the 1950s, and an early-morning or late-evening stop here is one of the most satisfying “you’re really on island now” rituals. (Note: Kuakini used to be famously open 24 hours, but per the current Liliha Bakery locations page, all locations now keep standard daytime-into-evening hours.) For malasadas — the Portuguese doughnut that arrived in Hawaiʻi with sugar-plantation laborers in the 1880s and never left — Leonard’s Bakery on Kapahulu Avenue is the touchstone. It has been frying them since 1952. Plain, sugared, haupia-filled, custard-filled. The line moves fast. Eat them immediately; malasadas do not keep. And for anyone driving to the North Shore on day one, Ted’s Bakery at 59-024 Kamehameha Highway in Haleʻiwa (near Sunset Beach) is the required chocolate-haupia-pie stop. Slice of pie, ice-cold Arizona tea, eat it at the picnic tables across from the break. It is not a fancy bakery — it’s a roadside plate-lunch counter with an excellent pie window — but the chocolate haupia cream pie is a genuine Hawaiʻi original, and every North Shore itinerary should include a slice.

If you want the modern side of the Oʻahu bakery scene, Breadshop in Kaimukī (3408 Waiʻalae Avenue) is the craft-sourdough pick. They opened in 2016 and operate on a tight pre-order model: the weekly menu drops Tuesday at 9 a.m., you order online a day or two ahead, you pick up. Everything is made by hand in small batches, and they sell out the same day. Country sourdough, seeded miche, rye, a rotating pastry selection with laminated croissants and seasonal fruit danishes. Good coffee next door. This is the bakery to plan around, not walk into.

The thing to order: Cream puffs — hand-filled each morning with Ikuo Komoda’s original recipe, about 400 a day, and they sell out fast. Also: stick donuts (donuts threaded onto a wooden skewer), butter rolls, and the guava malasadas.

Where: 3674 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, in the heart of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town Upcountry on Maui. The storefront has looked largely unchanged since 1916, when Takezo and Shigeri Komoda opened the original Komoda Store and Coffee Station — the bakery side added after their son Ikuo returned from baking school in Minnesota in 1947, with the iconic cream puffs introduced in the 1960s.

Know before you go: Hours are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday — closed Wednesday and Sunday. Arrive by 10 a.m. or the cream puffs are gone. Call ahead at (808) 572-7261 if you want to guarantee a specific item; they take phone orders and that is genuinely the move. This is the single best “plan a detour for it” bakery on Maui.

Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop at 820 Olowalu Village Road, just south of Lahaina along Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) in the Olowalu village area, is the other Maui bakery I’d send visitors to. The pies are the draw — banana cream with mac-nut crust, chocolate haupia cream, pineapple macadamia nut, sweet potato haupia. The savory side of the menu (olive bread, hand pies, a real turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo) is also excellent, and the building itself is a converted plantation-era country store with open seating.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This is a natural stop on the way to or from Lahaina, and an even better stop if you’re heading to or from the Kapalua/Kāʻanapali side — it breaks the drive up with an actual meal and dessert.

For a classic Wailuku stop on a rainy day or a morning en route to Iʻao Valley, Stillwell’s Bakery & Café at 1740 Kaʻahumanu Avenue serves pastries, breads, and a lunch counter with soups and sandwiches. They’re open daily, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., which makes them one of the easier bakery stops to work into a Wailuku day at any time. It’s not a destination bakery in the way Komoda is, but if you’re in Wailuku it’s a solid pick.

The thing to order: Hawaiian sweetbread — the soft, sweet, slightly eggy Portuguese-style loaf that is the bake shop’s calling card. Get a warm loaf, grab a few malasadas, add a macadamia nut shortbread cookie, and eat the lot at the tables out by the garden fish pond.

Where: 95-5642 Māmalahoa Highway (Route 11) in Nāʻālehu, on the southern section of the Big Island between Kailua-Kona and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. This is genuinely the southernmost bakery in the United States — the sign out front is not joking — and the location makes it a near-mandatory stop on the Kona-to-Volcano drive.

Why bother: On a Big Island trip where you’re trying to combine Kona with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the southern Māmalahoa route is the scenic connection between the two, and Punaluʻu Bake Shop is the single best food stop on that whole drive. On the Hilo side, Short N Sweet Bakery & Café at 1263 Kīlauea Avenue is the local pick for custom cakes, cinnamon rolls, scones, and a full café menu. Open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday. Good coffee, proper breakfast sandwiches, a case of pastries that rotates daily, and an extremely Hilo vibe — local families, umbrellas by the door, forgiving of kids. If you’re staying on the Hilo side of the island and want a real bakery morning stop, this is the one.

For malasadas specifically, Tex Drive In at 45-690 Pakalana Street in Honokaʻa (on the Hāmākua Coast, along Route 19) is the Big Island touchstone. They’ve been frying them since 1969, offer filled varieties (chocolate, haupia, lilikoʻi), and are a natural stop on any Waipiʻo Valley or Hāmākua Coast drive. Tex is a drive-in first and a bakery second, but the malasadas are among the best on the island.

The thing to order: Malasadas, manapua (steamed or baked buns filled with char siu pork), and cinnamon rolls. Kauai Bakery has been running for more than 20 years and is the local morning stop on the way to anywhere on the island.

Where: 3-2600 Kaumualiʻi Highway, Suite 1526, Līhuʻe, inside Kukui Grove Shopping Center. Kauai Bakery keeps mornings-only hours and is closed Sunday and Monday — per the current Kukui Grove Center listing, the shop opens at 6 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closes between noon and 2 p.m. depending on the day. Call (808) 320-3434 before a special-trip detour.

Why it works as a visitor stop: Kauaʻi doesn’t have the same density of bakeries that Oʻahu and Maui do, and the ones that locals rely on tend to be small, early, and not on most tourist radar. Kauai Bakery is the exception — it’s easy to find in Līhuʻe near the airport, it’s cheap, and it gives you a proper taste of local-Japanese-style bakery items you won’t find back home.

For the craft-sourdough side of the Kauaʻi bakery scene, Midnight Bear Breads is the operation. Baker Evan McAfee runs the kitchen overnight — hence the name — and the current bakery address is 2-3687 Kaumualiʻi Highway in Lāwaʻi, on the south side of Kauaʻi. You’ll also find their bread at weekend farmers markets in Kīlauea and Puhi, which is often the easier way to grab a loaf if you’re staying on the north or east shores.

What to buy: rosemary-sea-salt baguettes, French country sourdough, macadamia nut cinnamon rolls, and rotating seasonal fruit danishes. Everything is made in tiny batches and sells out by mid-morning. This is the Kauaʻi equivalent of Breadshop on Oʻahu — bring cash, plan ahead, and don’t expect to walk up and find everything at noon.

Go early. Every single bakery on this list sells out of their best items by mid-morning. “Mid-morning” in Hawaiʻi means 10 a.m. If you show up at noon expecting Komoda cream puffs or Breadshop miche, you will leave disappointed. Plan a 7 or 8 a.m. stop on your way to somewhere, not a dessert stop after lunch.

Cash is still useful. The bigger bakeries all take cards, but small operations, farmers market stalls, and older counter setups sometimes prefer cash. Carry $20–$40 in small bills when you’re planning a bakery morning.

Hours change, especially on holidays. Hawaiʻi bakeries often close for holidays you might not expect — local observances, Japanese holidays, staff family events. Call ahead or check Instagram the day before if you’re planning a serious detour.

Don’t forget what you already booked. If you have a car already — and across every island except maybe Waikīkī-only Oʻahu trips, you probably do — these stops add minutes, not hours, to your itinerary. This is not a complete list. Every island has more bakeries worth visiting — coffee shops with excellent scones, roadside fruit stands with banana bread, hotel bakeries that punch above their weight. The eight on this list are the ones I’d plan a trip detour around. Everything else is a bonus.
