A few things about the season worth knowing before you book:

Trades and visibility. NOAA’s Hawaiʻi climate summary puts the dry season from May through September, especially on the leeward (kona) sides. Morning marine layer typically burns off by 9 or 10 AM, and operators tend to run their fullest schedules in these months. More daily flights means more route flexibility if your first window gets weathered out.

The eruption. Kīlauea is in an episodic eruption that began in late 2024 and has cycled through 48 numbered episodes by early June 2026. Episodes vary — some are short fountain bursts, others are days of sustained lava lake activity inside the summit caldera (Halemaʻumaʻu). When an episode is active, Blue Hawaiian, Paradise, and Safari route their Hilo and Kona departures over the caldera under their Commercial Use Authorizations with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Episodes can pause without warning, so book the flight first and treat the lava as a bonus, not a guarantee. The current status: live eruption tracker.

Whales are gone. Humpback season runs roughly November through April. By June the whales have returned to Alaska, so any helicopter tour pitching “whale watching from the air” in summer is selling a winter product out of season. Politely move on.

What you’re paying for. A standard 45-to-65-minute scenic flight on the major operators generally runs around $300 to $500 per person, based on current rate sheets at Blue Hawaiian and Safari. Doors-off, longer routes, and private charters run higher. Discounting in peak summer is rare because seats sell out.

Kauaʻi is the island that turned helicopter tourism into a serious business. Most of the island’s interior is inaccessible by road (the gohawaii.com line is “much of the island’s interior is inaccessible by car”), so the only way to actually see Mt. Waiʻaleʻale, the inside of Waimea Canyon, and the back of the Nā Pali Coast is from a kayak, a boat, or 1,500 feet up. Helicopters do it best.

The standard 50-to-65-minute Kauaʻi circuit leaves Līhuʻe Airport clockwise and hits Hanapēpē Valley, Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” nickname is widely misattributed to Mark Twain, but the canyon is real), Nā Pali Coast cliffs, Hanalei Bay, and the Waiʻaleʻale Crater rim. Waiʻaleʻale routinely ranks among the wettest spots on Earth, with average rainfall above 400 inches a year carving vertical waterfalls into a glacial-looking cirque. On a clear morning operators sometimes fly into the crater bowl itself.

Two airports, two different experiences. Flights out of Hilo are the shorter, lava-focused option: straight across the saddle to Halemaʻumaʻu, around the summit caldera, then down the East Rift Zone past Puʻu ʻŌʻō and over the 2018 lower Puna flow field, with Hilo’s waterfall side (Wailuku, Akaka, the Hamakua Coast) on the return. Flights out of Kona (Kailua-Kona, KOA) run longer because they have to cross the island and back, typically as a “Circle of Fire” or “Big Island Spectacular” route that bolts Kohala sea cliffs and the Hamakua Coast onto the volcano segment.

During an active eruption episode like the one that began June 1, the lava view is the headline. When episodes pause (and they do — Episode 47 ended in mid-May, then 48 fired up two weeks later), volcano flights still cover the active caldera and the rift zones, just without flowing lava. Operators won’t refund a flight if the lava stops between booking and departure. That’s the deal with a live volcano.

Booking lead time: 1 to 2 weeks normally, but stretching to 2 to 4 weeks right now because of Episode 48. Hilo departures are filling fastest.

Maui flights split into two routes that don’t overlap much. The West Maui & Molokaʻi circuit climbs into the West Maui Mountains (the wettest peak, Puʻu Kukui, sees roughly 360 inches of rain a year), drops into the ʻĪao Valley headwall, traces the north-shore sea cliffs out to Molokaʻi’s Halawa coastline (often cited as the world’s tallest sea cliffs, depending on how you define one), and returns down the leeward Lahaina side. The Hāna & Haleakalā circuit goes east, over the Twin Falls / Road to Hāna waterfall corridor, around the Haleakalā crater rim from above, and across the back side of the mountain.

A note on Lahaina. West Maui circuit routes pass over the August 2023 burn zone. If you’d rather not see it from the air, ask your operator before booking how they route over Lahaina and whether they can put you on a Hāna-side itinerary instead. Most will accommodate the request.

Oʻahu is the underrated helicopter island. Most visitors don’t think of helicopters here because Waikīkī, Diamond Head, and the North Shore are all reachable by rental car. But the Koʻolau Range backbone, the windward sea cliffs from Makapuʻu around to Kahana, and the inside of Sacred Falls valley (closed to hiking since 1999) are all helicopter-only. A 45-minute Oʻahu flight covers more visually distinct terrain per minute than any other island.

The standard route departs Honolulu (HNL), tracks east over Waikīkī, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and Makapuʻu lighthouse, then up the windward coast past Chinaman’s Hat (Mokoliʻi), Kualoa Ranch (yes, the Jurassic Park ridges), the Polynesian Cultural Center area, the Banzai Pipeline and the North Shore breaks, then back across the H-3 ridge through the Koʻolau notches and over Pearl Harbor on final approach. Pearl Harbor sits inside restricted airspace, so operators fly it under timed clearances and warn that the segment can’t always be guaranteed. Doors-off is the biggest decision after picking your island. Short version: doors-off is for photographers and people who specifically want the visceral hit of flying with nothing between them and the air. Doors-on is what most people should actually book.

What doors-off actually means. The helicopter’s side doors come off before takeoff. You’re strapped to a 4-point harness over a regular seatbelt, you take steady high-speed wind in the face for the whole flight, and at altitude over Kauaʻi or the Big Island summit area, the air is 50°F or colder. Most operators provide a flight suit; bring a long-sleeve layer underneath, closed-toe shoes, and no loose hat, no scarf, no lens cap on a wrist strap. Anything that can fly off will fly off, can ingest into the rotor, and is grounds for an emergency landing. Phones must be tethered.

What doors-off is great for. Photography without window glare, unobstructed view straight down, and the genuine feeling of flying. The footage looks dramatically better. Even an iPhone gets reference-quality results because there’s no reflection.

What doors-off is not great for. First-time helicopter passengers, anyone with motion sickness susceptibility, families with kids under about 8, and anyone who wants to chat through the flight (the intercom works but conversation is harder). Doors-off seats also carry a premium over the same operator’s doors-on equivalent.

Is doors-off less safe? Probably not. No public dataset separates doors-off from doors-on outcomes, and the harness-and-restraint requirements equalize in-flight passenger risk. The real risk in helicopter touring is weather decisions and route choice, not the doors. Pick an operator with a clean recent record before you pick the doors configuration.

Hawaiʻi helicopter touring has had a public safety reckoning since the December 2019 Safari Aviation crash on Kauaʻi, which killed all 7 onboard and prompted FAA action on the unique weather challenges of Hawaiʻi tour flying. The FAA’s Hawaiʻi Air Tour Common Procedures Manual, published in 2022, codified altitude minimums, weather minimums, and route standardization for tour operators. It made the industry materially safer. It does not make every operator equal.

Two things to check before you book:

1. The NTSB accident database. Go to carol.ntsb.gov and search by operator name. Every Part 135 air tour operator in the U.S. is searchable. Look at the last 5 years. A clean record or one minor incident with a clear root cause is fine. A pattern of weather-related incidents is not.

2. The operator’s same-day weather posture. Call the operator the morning of your flight, or watch their social media. The operators who routinely push through marginal weather to keep paying customers happy are the ones to skip. The operators who text you that morning to say “the route’s reduced today, we’re not flying the full Nā Pali rim because of clouds” are showing you their decision-making. The right answer to “should we fly today?” is sometimes no.

One more thing: there’s no meaningful safety gap between the major airframe families operators use — Airbus (EC130, AS350), Bell, and MD500. Twin-engine helicopters carry a clear advantage if an engine fails, but no helicopter type is exempt from Hawaiʻi’s weather-driven crash patterns. Pick the operator first, the aircraft second.

The morning-of stuff that actually matters:

Wear. Long pants or capris (not shorts, the cabin gets cold), closed-toe shoes (sandals are sometimes a no-go), a long-sleeve layer, and a dark-colored top. Dark colors cut window reflections in your photos. No bright whites, no neons.

Bring. A phone (with a wrist tether if you’re doors-off), motion sickness meds taken 30+ minutes before takeoff if you’re prone (over-the-counter acupressure wristbands work for some people, actual meds work for more), and a driver’s license or passport for the weight-and-balance check.

Skip. Loose hats, scarves, anything that could come off in wind. Camera straps doors-off are required, not optional. Heavy jackets are unnecessary inside the cabin doors-on, the cabin is warm. Drone toys are a federal violation near tour operations, so leave the drone at home.

The weight rule. Operators weigh every passenger at check-in for weight-and-balance compliance. This is standard. Some operators (Blue Hawaiian at 250 lbs, Air Maui at 240 lbs) charge a comfort-seat fee above that threshold to keep load balanced. Email ahead if you’re concerned and they’ll walk you through their policy.

Three things that are different this summer:

Big Island first if you can. Episode 48 just kicked off. Hilo departures are the priority booking. If you can move your Big Island portion of the trip earlier, even by a week, the lava-active flight is worth it.

Don’t book your one helicopter for the last morning of your trip. Helicopter tours get weathered out often enough that operators bake rebook policies into their terms, and you need a buffer day. If your flight is the only thing standing between your trip and your departure flight home, you don’t have a rebook window. Book it for day 3 or 4 of your stay.

Bundle the car too. The major Hawaiʻi airports have helicopter departures based at or near the terminal complex, but you’ll want a rental car for the morning of (and you’ll want to avoid the rental return crunch by picking the car up the day prior).
