A Hawaiʻi trail can be open when you plan the trip and closed after a storm, wildfire, maintenance notice, surf event, or access-road failure. A static list of "open trails" becomes unsafe quickly, so this page does not duplicate a temporary closure roster.

Start with Hawaii Guide's Trail & Attraction Status and Travel Alerts, then confirm the route with the land manager on the day you go. A reservation is not proof that the access road, park, or trail is open.

• State forest and Nā Ala Hele trails: use the official Hawaiʻi Trails map, closures, and advisories.
• State parks and monuments: read the Division of State Parks important park notices and the page for the specific park.
• National parks: use the current conditions pages for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes or Haleakalā.
• County trails and parks: follow the county parks, emergency-management, or facility page named by the trail owner.

Third-party trail apps can help with navigation and recent observations, but they do not overrule a gate, closure notice, permit rule, private-property boundary, or official warning.

1. Confirm legal access. Identify the land manager, trailhead, parking area, hours, and whether the route crosses private or restricted land.
2. Confirm the reservation or permit. Read what the product covers: entry, parking, shuttle, camping, or a particular person or vehicle.
3. Check closure notices. Read the page, banner, and dated alerts instead of trusting an old search result.
4. Check the route to the trailhead. A trail can be technically open while a road, bridge, gate, or parking lot is inaccessible.
5. Check weather and hazards. Rainfall upstream, flash flooding, heat, wind, wildfire, surf, volcanic emissions, and darkness can change the decision.
6. Keep a legal backup. Choose a second route or indoor stop before leaving the hotel.

Diamond Head, Hāʻena, Kalalau camping, and Haleakalā sunrise illustrate different systems. One may regulate timed entry, another parking or shuttle access, another overnight use, and another a specific time window. Do not treat "I have a reservation" as a universal access credential.

Use the Hawaii Reservation Checker to identify the official system, then read the confirmation and current park notice together. Names, IDs, vehicles, entry times, and cancellation terms can matter.

Do not walk around a closed gate, use a social-media shortcut, park illegally outside the access point, or assume that other hikers make the route permissible. Closures can protect rescuers, damaged infrastructure, cultural resources, wildlife, or private property even when the first section looks passable.

If an official page is unclear, treat access as unconfirmed. Choose the backup and retry after the responsible agency posts an update.

• Match distance, elevation, surface, exposure, and turnaround time to the least-prepared person in the group.
• Carry water, sun and rain protection, and footwear suited to the actual terrain.
• Download or carry the official route information where service is unreliable.
• Tell someone the route and expected return time for remote hikes.
• Turn around for weather, water, fatigue, injury, a changed gate, or fading daylight.
