Hawaiʻi honu nesting season is underway, and most summer visitors won’t recognize the signs. The beach you walk down at sunrise might have a sea turtle nest buried under the sand a few feet from the high-water mark. You won’t see the nest. You won’t see the mother. She came ashore at night, dug, laid, covered, and crawled back to the water before dawn. The nest is there, and so are the rules around it. Most visitors don’t learn either one until a state monitor walks up and asks them to back away from a roped-off square of sand.

Hawaiian green sea turtle (honu) nesting runs from late April through late October. Hawksbill (honuʻea) nesting runs May through December. Both peak in June and July, per the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources. That window sits squarely on the summer travel calendar.

Here’s what changes for beachgoers this summer: keep distance, watch for roped nests, kill beach-facing lights after sunset, and call the right hotline if you find a hatchling.

The historical version of the Hawaiʻi sea turtle story: about 96% of all Hawaiian green sea turtle nesting happens at Lalo (French Frigate Shoals) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, inside Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, per DLNR. That’s still true. The flagship green turtle nesting site is a remote atoll about 500 miles northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands that no visitor will ever set foot on, per NOAA Fisheries.

What’s changed is the other 4%. After fifty years of Endangered Species Act protection, the Hawaiian green sea turtle population has rebounded. The number of nesting females tracked at East Island has grown from 67 in 1973 to roughly 466 per year today, an annual increase of about 5.7% since monitoring began, per NOAA Fisheries. As the population has grown, more females have started returning to nest on the main Hawaiian Islands, on beaches where they hadn’t bred in living memory. DLNR’s species page notes that “recent years show turtles nesting on popular beaches again for the first time in years.”

The hawksbill turtle (honuʻea) tells a different version of the same story. This species nests almost exclusively on the main Hawaiian Islands, with the bulk of all known activity concentrated on the Kaʻū coast of Hawaiʻi Island between Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and Waikapuna. Researchers estimate fewer than 100 nesting females remain in the entire Hawaiian archipelago, with about 40 of them nesting along that single Kaʻū stretch, per the Hawaiʻi Island Hawksbill Project and Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund. Smaller numbers nest on Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Kauaʻi.

The practical upshot for travelers: nests can show up on beaches you’re actually visiting, and the chance of stumbling onto one in summer 2026 is meaningfully higher than it was even five years ago.

The single most important rule to internalize: stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from any honu, on land or in the water. That’s the recommended viewing distance from both NOAA Fisheries and DLNR.

Two things to know about that 10 feet:

It applies on the beach, not just in the water. Honu regularly haul out to bask on the sand during the day. This happens year-round. Honu bask at a handful of well-known spots, including Laniakea Beach on Oʻahu’s North Shore and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach on Hawaiʻi Island. The 10-foot distance applies to a basking turtle the same way it applies to a swimming one.

It’s a recommended distance, but the law sits behind it. All Hawaiian sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Green turtles are listed as threatened; hawksbills as endangered. Harassing, harming, or pursuing them is a federal crime. NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement notes that violators can face civil penalties of up to $12,000 per violation or criminal penalties of up to $25,000 and six months in prison. A 2018 case on Kauaʻi resulted in a $1,500 settlement against a visitor who touched a Hawaiian monk seal and harassed a sea turtle, per NOAA. The 10-foot guideline isn’t itself a legal line. Cross it, and harassment becomes the question, and a state or federal officer gets to decide.

A few rules are flatly illegal regardless of distance. Never touch, feed, ride, or chase a sea turtle. Never drive a vehicle on a Hawaiian beach during nesting season; DLNR states clearly that “vehicle traffic on nesting beaches is not only harmful, it’s illegal.” Never light a beach fire near a nesting area. Hatchlings orient toward the brightest horizon, which should be the moon over the ocean, not your campfire.

Most nests on the main Hawaiian Islands are not signposted in advance. The nest itself is invisible: sand smoothed over and scattered with debris by the mother. Trained volunteers and state monitors find them by checking for “crawl tracks” in the sand at sunrise, then mark and rope off the area afterward. So the way you’ll usually encounter one is mid-trip: a fenced or roped square of sand with a small sign, often with a volunteer keeping watch.

A handful of beaches have enough recurring activity that visitors should be ready.

Nesting areas to be aware of:

Hawaiʻi Island — Kaʻū coast and Volcanoes National Park southern coastline: The most active hawksbill nesting region in the United States, per the Hawaiʻi Island Hawksbill Project. Subareas include Punaluʻu, Kamehame, Kawa Bay, Pohue Bay, and the stretch between the park boundary and Waikapuna. Both honu and hawksbill nest here. Most of these beaches are remote and require a hike or four-wheel drive to access. Stay back, don’t approach, and don’t block any roped-off squares of sand.

Oʻahu — windward and North Shore beaches: Bellows Field Beach Park, Kahuku, and stretches of the North Shore have all had recent green turtle nesting per DLNR’s monitoring. Volunteer groups assist on Oʻahu nests when they’re identified. You’ll occasionally see roped sections at Bellows in particular through summer.

Maui: Hawksbill nesting happens in low numbers on isolated Maui beaches; the Marine Institute at Maui Ocean Center participates in monitoring. Confirmed nests on Maui are far less frequent than on Hawaiʻi Island.

Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Kauaʻi: Smaller numbers of hawksbill nests on isolated beaches. Activity is monitored locally and reported to DLNR.

Basking and swimming spots where the 10-foot rule still applies: Punaluʻu (Hawaiʻi Island), Laniakea on Oʻahu’s North Shore, and Maluaka (Turtle Town) and Hoʻokipa on Maui all see regular green turtle activity in the water and on the sand. None of these are primary nesting beaches, but the distance rule applies anytime a turtle is present.

None of this means you should plan a trip “to see a nesting turtle.” Nesting itself happens at night, the nests are intentionally hidden, and the active period of any individual nest spans only a couple of months from deposit to hatch. The point: any beach you visit this summer might have one, and the rules apply whether or not you can see it.

Eggs incubate underground for about two months, per NOAA Fisheries. When they hatch, the baby turtles emerge en masse and crawl as a group toward the brightest horizon. On a healthy beach with no artificial lighting, that’s the moon over the ocean. The crawl from the nest to the water is not a logistics problem to be solved on the hatchlings’ behalf. It’s a critical phase of the animal’s development. The crawl is how they imprint on the beach, build muscle, and orient themselves for the rest of their lives.

The single most important rule from DLNR’s nesting season guidance: Never pick up a hatchling and place it in the ocean. The crawl is doing real biological work. Carrying them shortcuts a process that helps determine whether they survive their first year. If hatchlings are heading away from the water, toward parking-lot lights or beachfront houses, that’s a different problem (light pollution disorienting the crawl), and the right response is to call for help, not to relocate the animals yourself.

What to do if you encounter hatchlings or an emerging nest:

1. Stay back at least 10 feet, and keep other people back too.

2. Turn off any flashlights and phone lights pointed at the beach. Hatchlings orient by light, and a bright phone screen is enough to send them the wrong direction.

3. Call the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at (888) 256-9840. This is the statewide 24-hour number for sick, injured, stranded, or otherwise distressed turtles, including hatchling events. Trained volunteers may be able to respond.

4. If you witness someone harassing a turtle (picking one up, blocking its crawl, riding, chasing), report it to NOAA enforcement at 1-800-853-1964 or to DLNR DOCARE at 1-643-DLNR (1-643-3567).

5. If you see a vehicle driving through a nesting beach, DLNR directs callers to dial 911.

A subtle one. Hawaiian beaches in the developed corridors (Waikīkī, Kāʻanapali, Poʻipū) sit next to a wall of artificial light from hotels, condos, and beachfront homes. For most of the year that’s a non-issue. During nesting and hatching season, it’s a documented threat, per DLNR. Nesting females avoid lit beaches. Hatchlings emerging from a nest near a lit area can crawl toward the lights instead of the ocean, which often kills them.

DLNR’s standing guidance during nesting and hatching season (May through December for both species combined) is to use wildlife-friendly lighting where possible: amber or yellow bulbs, low-wattage, shielded so they shine downward, not toward the beach, per the DLNR sea turtle page. If you’re staying in a beachfront condo or vacation rental this summer, the easiest thing you can do is close your beach-facing curtains after sunset. It costs nothing, and it materially helps.

A second small rule: don’t bring a beach fire. Fires are restricted on most Hawaiʻi beaches under state and county park rules, and they’re particularly damaging in nesting season because flames are exactly the kind of bright, disorienting light that pulls hatchlings the wrong way. The same goes for sky lanterns and aerial fireworks near the beach during summer holidays. They’re disorienting on top of being a wildfire risk in dry vegetation.

Two long-running citizen science programs are worth knowing about, even if you only have a casual interest:

Hawaiʻi Island Hawksbill Project is based out of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and runs nightly Turtle Patrols and Nest Watch shifts on remote Kaʻū beaches through nesting season. Their 2026 volunteer term runs May 20 through November 20, with applications submitted as a single PDF to info@hawaiiislandhawksbillproject.org. Preference goes to applicants who can commit to the full term. This is not a “drop in for a day” program. It’s serious commitment, but rewarding work.

Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund coordinates volunteer-driven monitoring on the South Kona and Kaʻū coastlines. Sign-ups for shorter-term volunteer projects open seasonally. Their hawksbill recovery work has run since 1996.

For most visitors, “helping” looks more modest: stay back, keep lights off, report what you see to NOAA, and don’t pick up the hatchlings. None of those is dramatic. All of them are useful. The cumulative effect across thousands of summer visitors is the difference between a recovering population and a stalling one.

Most travelers will spend a full Hawaiʻi week without ever seeing a nest. A small minority will walk past a roped-off square of sand and not realize what’s under it. A smaller minority still will be on the beach at dawn when a clutch of hatchlings emerges and crawls past their feet toward the surf. That last group has the rarest seat in Hawaiian nature, and the rules above are how you keep it that way.
