At the door: listed admission is $25 for adults and $20 for students ages 13–17; children 12 and under remain free. The ticketed festival includes the Bird Fair and Crown Room presentations. Check the organizer's current terms before making a special trip.

Free options: the Learning Lounge on the Lobby Lānai is free all day. All Bird Fair rooms are free to the public from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. That final hour is a Bird Fair visit; the Crown Room presentation program is earlier in the day.

The organizer posts the speaker schedule and exhibitor list on the same 2026 program page and warns that the schedule may change. Choose your sessions there, then recheck before leaving for the festival.

Casual visitors: I would allow two or three hours. Choose a presentation from the published program if buying admission, or use the free 4:30–5:30 p.m. Bird Fair hour for a shorter stop. Leave room for Hilo Bay or a meal. This works well for a mixed-interest family that likes wildlife but does not want every hour built around birding.

Birders and conservation-minded travelers: I would keep most of Saturday open. The organizer schedules Crown Room presentations from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and briefly closes the Bird Fair rooms from 10 to 10:30 a.m. for the opening presentation. Plan around those windows, choose a midday break, and avoid adding a cross-island drive afterward.

Families with younger children: start with the published program and free Learning Lounge, then choose a manageable visit. Check each activity’s timing and admission requirements rather than assuming the free Bird Fair hour includes the presentations.

I would book Friday and Saturday nights on Hilo's east side. The Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo sits at 93 Banyan Drive, so staying there cuts out the festival-morning commute. A car becomes useful once you add a forest or park day. Compare current rates through Discount Hawaii Car Rental, but I would not turn festival Saturday into a coast-to-coast driving day. Keep that day in Hilo and put the longer birding plan on Friday or Sunday.

The festival happens at a hotel venue. It is not a guided field excursion. If native forest birds are the reason for your trip, I would give that goal one separate day rather than scatter a few rushed stops around the island.

Choose a permitted Hakalau guide for the highest-priority forest day. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is closed to self-guided visits, while permitted commercial guides can enter the Pua Akala Unit. Keep Kīpukapuaulu off the plan unless NPS confirms reopening. The National Park Service’s September 27 notice lists Kīpukapuaulu Trail among the remaining closures. Check current park alerts or ask park staff before including it in a field day. An older trail description is not confirmation that access has reopened.

Use the state birding-trails site for a flexible sampler. Hawaiʻi's state birding-trails site maps forest, wetland, and coastal birding stops across the island. I would pick one habitat near the rest of your itinerary instead of chasing a long checklist from Hilo to Kona in a single day.

The festival's conservation message should carry into every field day. The state's ethical birding guidance asks visitors to stay quiet, keep their distance, remain on official trails, respect private property, and clean gear before and after entering a forest.

Skip bird-call recordings in the forest. The guidance says not to use bird-call playback devices or smartphone bird-call audio because it can disturb behavior and change how birds find food or seek mates. Learn calls before the outing, then let the real forest set the volume.

That is how I would frame the weekend: learn from the people doing the work at the festival, then visit habitat without turning a rare bird into a photo prop.

Now: decide whether staying in Hilo fits your trip, then read the cancellation terms before reserving. Choose whether you want a guided forest day, a self-guided park walk, or only the festival.
