I get a version of this question from a Big Island visitor every week: “Where do I book the Hawaii lava boat tours that take you out to see lava hitting the ocean?” The honest answer right now is that nobody is booking those rides because lava is not reaching the ocean. The current Kīlauea eruption is summit-confined inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater, far from the coast, and the operators that used to run lava boat tours stopped when the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption ended.

This guide explains why those tours are not running this summer, what you can actually see right now, and the alternatives I’d point a first-time Big Island visitor toward instead of chasing a tour that does not exist on the current schedule.

From May through early September 2018, lava from Kīlauea’s lower East Rift Zone reached the Pacific at a coastal entry near Pohoiki, southeast of Hilo. Boats out of the Pohoiki Boat Ramp at Isaac Hale Beach Park motored a short distance offshore so passengers could see molten rock plunging into the sea, the laze plume blowing sideways from the entry, and the steam curtain lit orange by the lava beneath. Two operators ran most of the trips: Lava Ocean Tours and Kalapana Cultural Tours.

It was a once-in-a-generation experience. Then the rift activity stopped, the coastal lava entry ended, and Kīlauea’s eruptive activity moved back to the summit caldera. The boat tours had nothing left to take people to.

Since then Kīlauea has erupted multiple times, but every eruption since 2020 has stayed inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater at the summit — roughly 20 miles inland from the southeastern coast and at about 4,000 feet of elevation. No lava is flowing across land, no lava is reaching the ocean, and there is no commercial boat tour to take you to it. As of this writing, Episode 50 of the ongoing 2024–2026 summit eruption is in its precursory phase, with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory tracking the buildup toward another lava-fountaining episode at the same summit location.

The Lava Ocean Tours website is offline as of this writing, and the boats that ran the 2018 trips are no longer running lava charters. The brand could relaunch if a future eruption sends lava back to the coast — Kīlauea has produced multiple coastal eruptions over the last four decades — but nobody is taking deposits today for a tour that has no current product to deliver.

Be careful here. A handful of third-party booking sites still list “Big Island lava boat tour” pages that look bookable but actually redirect to general Big Island sightseeing cruises out of Kona, with no lava component at all. If a listing implies you’ll see lava entering the ocean this summer, it’s selling something that does not currently exist. Read the fine print before you give anyone a credit card.

The good news: when Kīlauea is in an active fountaining episode — which has been the rule, not the exception, since December 2024 — the summit views from inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park are genuinely world-class. You’re standing at the rim of a caldera watching lava jet into the air, glow off the cloud deck after dark, and pool in the crater below. No boat required.

The main overlooks listed by the National Park Service for an active summit eruption sit along Crater Rim Drive on the western side of Halemaʻumaʻu — Uēkahuna, the Keanakākoʻi overlook, and the area near the Devastation Trail parking lot. The Park Service also publishes current park conditions and viewing guidance that update whenever access changes. Plan your visit using the NPS Plan Your Visit hub, and check the HVNP webcam feeds before you drive over so you know what’s actually visible.

Go after dark if you can. The eruption’s glow against the night cloud deck is the visual the photographers want, and the crowds thin out after the daytime visitor center closes. The park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which makes nighttime viewing during eruptive activity straightforward.

If you want a moving, narrated, “I paid for the lava experience” trip, the closest substitute to a 2018 lava boat tour is a Big Island helicopter tour out of Hilo or Kona. The Volcanoes-circuit flights drop down over Halemaʻumaʻu when the eruption is active and give you the aerial view of fountaining or the lava lake from above. Some operators take the doors off; some don’t. Hilo-based departures sit much closer to the summit, so flights tend to be shorter and generally less expensive. Kona-side flights have to cover a longer distance over the island before reaching the volcano, which usually means a longer total flight time and a higher per-person price.

A few things to know before you book a helicopter as your lava plan B:

• Helicopter views depend on the same thing the summit overlooks do — there has to be active fountaining or visible lava in the crater. Episode breaks (the days-to-weeks pauses between fountaining bursts) leave you looking at a steaming, hardened crater floor. Worth checking the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory updates before you fly.
• Pricing on the volcano circuit runs roughly $300–$500+ per person depending on departure point, tour length, and whether doors are on or off. A current sample: Paradise Helicopters’ doors-off Volcano and Kohala tour and Blue Hawaiian’s Circle of Fire both sit in that range. Confirm current rates with the operator at the time you book.
• All flights are weather-dependent. Vog from the eruption itself, low cloud cover over the summit, and trade-wind turbulence can cancel flights with little notice. Build a flex day into your itinerary.

If you want someone else to drive and narrate the volcano experience without the cost of a helicopter, two land-based options actually deliver.

Volcano van and small-group tours. Operators based in Volcano Village and Hilo run small-group, half-day to full-day trips that combine HVNP overlooks with in-park stops at the Steaming Bluff and Sulphur Banks, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) when open, the Kīlauea Iki overlook, and the Chain of Craters Road descent toward the coast. Self-driving from Kona or Kohala. If you’re comfortable with the wheel, the simplest path is to drive yourself across the island on Highway 11 (south route) or Saddle Road / Daniel K. Inouye Highway (faster, more direct). It’s about 2.5 hours from Kona to the park entrance. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, water, and layers — the summit sits around 4,000 feet, and the NPS weather page notes summit temperatures typically run 12–15°F cooler than sea level, more after dark. Maybe. The honest answer is “whenever Kīlauea sends lava back to the coast.” That’s happened in waves over the last four decades — the 1986–1992 Kūpaʻianahā flows, the long-running Puʻu ʻŌʻō era from 1983 to 2018, and the 2018 lower East Rift Zone episode that ran about four months and reshaped the south end of the island. Looking at Kīlauea’s long-term behavior, ocean entries are a recurring feature, not a one-time event.

But the timing is genuinely uncertain. The current eruption sequence has stayed at the summit for nearly two years, and USGS does not publish a forecast for when activity will return to the rift zones. A coastal eruption could happen next month, next year, or a decade from now. If you’re planning a Big Island trip specifically to ride a boat past lava hitting the sea, the right move is to wait for confirmed news of an ocean entry before booking the trip — and then book fast, because every operator on the island sells out the moment that activity returns.

In the meantime: the summit eruption is putting on its own show, and you do not need a boat to see it.

A short, honest version of what to do right now if your trip is built around seeing lava:

• Check the eruption status the day before you drive over. The USGS HVO Kīlauea page tells you whether fountaining is currently underway or you’re in an inter-episode pause. Our own Episode 50 forecast post tracks the precursory signals in plain English.
• Go after dark if at all possible. The eruption’s glow against the cloud deck is what you’re paying gas money to see, and the crowds thin out dramatically after sunset.
• Bring layers. Summit-elevation cold at night is a real shock if your day was spent on a Kohala beach.
• Don’t book a “lava boat tour” without reading the fine print. If the operator can’t tell you exactly where lava is reaching the ocean in 2026, the answer is that it isn’t. Any tour selling itself on that premise is either out of date or misleading.
• Have a flex day for helicopter weather. Vog and cloud cover cancel flights without much warning.
