Every summer, Buddhist temples across Hawaiʻi host bon dances — outdoor festivals with live drumming, circle dancing, food booths, and lanterns strung across temple grounds. The season runs from June through September, with dances happening almost every weekend on every island. Visitors are welcome. You don’t need to be Buddhist, Japanese, or Hawaiian. You just need to show up.
Updated May 12, 2026: Temples are still rolling out their 2026 dates. The clearinghouse at oahubondance.com currently shows a 2025 tentative schedule with a note that updates are coming as each temple confirms. Most O’ahu temples post their dance dates in late May or early June, and the first dances of the season typically land mid-to-late June. We’ll bump this page again as the schedule fills in — the tradition has run continuously in Hawaiʻi for over 140 years, and the rhythm barely changes. Here’s what you need to know to find one and join in.
