I still hear from travelers at the HNL checkpoint who didn’t know REAL ID was a real thing now. They’re holding a regular state driver’s license, looking at the TSA officer, and asking the same question: “Are you serious?”

Yes. As of May 7, 2025, every adult flying domestically in the United States needs a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an acceptable alternative to clear TSA. Hawaii flights count. A trip to Honolulu, Maui, Kona, Hilo, or Lihue starts at a mainland security checkpoint, and that checkpoint runs under federal rules.

Summer is when this catches the most people. Family trips, anniversary trips, weddings. Folks who fly once a year or once every few years often don’t think about the rule until the suitcase is open. If you’re heading to Hawaii in July or August and haven’t checked your ID lately, this is the post to read before you pack. A few facts up front so the rest of this makes sense:

• REAL ID enforcement at TSA checkpoints began May 7, 2025. It is not a Hawaii-specific rule. It applies to every domestic flight in the US.
• A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license has a small star in the upper portion of the card. Most states use a gold or black star. California uses a gold bear with a star inside. If your card has no star, it is not REAL ID-compliant (DHS REAL ID FAQs).
• A US passport works in place of REAL ID. So does a US passport card, a Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI), a DHS-recognized Enhanced Driver’s License from Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, or Washington, a military ID, or a permanent resident card. • Children under 18 don’t need ID for domestic flights when traveling with an adult companion who has compliant ID (TSA FAQ).
• Don’t have REAL ID and can’t get one in time? TSA still has options. See the section below.

Pull your driver’s license out and look at the front, top corner. If you see a small star, you’re good. Per DHS, the star confirms the issuing state verified your identity, Social Security number, and proof of address when the card was issued.

State marker styles vary slightly:

• Gold star. Most states.
• Black star. A handful of states use this when their card design doesn’t accommodate gold.
• Bear with a star. California uses a gold bear outline with a star inside.
• Star inside a circle. A few state designs enclose the star in a circle or other outline; the star itself is the compliance mark (DHS REAL ID FAQs).
• No star at all. Your card is not REAL ID-compliant.

If your card is unmarked, you can still upgrade it at your state’s DMV. You’ll need to show proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of address. TSA keeps a state-by-state page with links to each DMV’s REAL ID instructions.

Some states issue both REAL ID and non-REAL ID licenses, depending on what documents you brought when you renewed. If you renewed in the last few years and didn’t actively go through the REAL ID process, you may have a “Federal Limits Apply” or “Not for Federal Identification” stamp on your card. That stamp means TSA will not accept it (DHS).

Your driver’s license isn’t your only option. TSA accepts about a dozen forms of ID at the checkpoint, and several of them are easier to get than a new driver’s license if you’re against a deadline.

The full accepted list for adults:

• US passport. The easiest substitute. Valid at TSA checkpoints while unexpired.
• US passport card. The wallet-sized version, valid for land and domestic travel.
• DHS Trusted Traveler card. Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST cards all qualify. Global Entry in particular pays off twice: it gets you through TSA without REAL ID and through customs faster on the way home from any international trip.
• Enhanced Driver’s License. Issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. These look like normal licenses but include a “USA” marker.
• US Department of Defense ID. Active military, dependents.
• Permanent resident card. Green card.
• Tribal-issued photo ID. Federally recognized tribes.
• HSPD-12 PIV card. Federal government employees.
• Foreign government-issued passport. For international visitors.
• Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Port and maritime workers.
• US Merchant Mariner Credential. Issued by the Coast Guard.
• Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC). VA-issued.
• Border Crossing Card. For some Mexico-US travelers.

For most Hawaii-bound travelers, the practical short list is: REAL ID driver’s license, passport, passport card, or Global Entry card. If you have any one of those, you’re fine.

First option: check the passport timeline before you assume it can save the trip. The State Department publishes current routine and expedited processing windows, plus mailing time on both ends — pull the live numbers the day you’re deciding, because they shift with demand. State Department passport-agency appointments are for urgent international travel, so a Hawaii-only domestic vacation is usually not the reason to count on that path. A standard passport acceptance facility (post office, library) also won’t help on a short timeline because those applications still go through routine processing.

Second option: show up at TSA anyway. TSA’s published “forgot your ID” procedure still applies if you arrive at the checkpoint without compliant ID. TSA can attempt to verify your identity through a series of questions and a public-records database. If they succeed, you go through enhanced screening and you make your flight. If they can’t verify you, you don’t fly. This is not a workaround. It is a fallback for emergencies. Don’t plan around it.

Third option, if you have a state DMV appointment but not the document in hand: bring whatever interim paperwork your state issues. Some states give you a temporary paper card or a receipt. TSA officers may or may not accept these at the checkpoint depending on the state and the document, so don’t count on it. Confirm with your state DMV before relying on interim paperwork.

The mistake I see most often is people assuming Hawaii is somehow exempt. It isn’t. Inter-island flights between Honolulu, Kahului, Kona, Hilo, and Lihue also run through TSA checkpoints. If you cleared TSA on the mainland with a passport and your passport is in the hotel safe when you fly inter-island, you’ll have a problem at the security line on island.

Anyone under 18 traveling on a domestic flight does not need to show ID at TSA, as long as they’re with an adult companion who has compliant ID (TSA). The 17-year-old can walk through the checkpoint without showing anything.

Two practical notes.

If your kid is flying alone (unaccompanied minor service or an older teen on their own), bring something with their name on it that matches the booking. A school ID, a passport, or a passport card all work. Airline unaccompanied-minor policies vary by carrier and change often, so check the airline’s UM page directly before the trip.

If you’re flying with kids who’ll need a passport later in the trip (Hawaii to international, or a future trip), a passport card is significantly cheaper than a full passport book and counts as REAL ID. The State Department lists current fees on its fee page, and its passport-card page explains that the card is not valid for international air travel. For families that do not already have passports, passport cards can still be the cheaper checkpoint-compliance option for domestic flights, but they are not a substitute for a passport book if anyone will fly internationally.

If you’re flying in from outside the US, your passport is your ID for every leg. You’ll show it at TSA, at airline check-in, and again at hotel check-in for the credit-card-on-file step. Don’t pack it. Don’t put it in checked luggage. Keep it in the same place you keep your boarding pass.

Inter-island flights for international visitors work the same way. Your foreign passport is your ID at any TSA checkpoint inside the islands. A foreign driver’s license is not on TSA’s list of accepted IDs, so don’t plan to use one.

For international families with kids, the under-18 exemption applies the same way at any US TSA checkpoint. Kids under 18 with a parent or adult companion don’t need ID.

TSA PreCheck is worth the time and money if you fly more than once or twice a year. TSA’s participating airports map shows PreCheck lanes at HNL, OGG, KOA, ITO, and LIH. In my own experience flying these airports, the PreCheck lanes move faster than the standard lanes, but actual wait times vary by day and hour. You keep shoes and belt on either way.

PreCheck doesn’t replace REAL ID. You still need compliant ID to use the PreCheck lane (TSA PreCheck FAQ). The two systems exist for different reasons: REAL ID verifies that you are who your ID says you are. PreCheck verifies that you’re a low-risk traveler. You can be one without the other; you need both to get the fast lane treatment.

Global Entry includes PreCheck, and the Global Entry card is listed on TSA’s accepted-ID page under DHS Trusted Traveler cards, so it clears you at the checkpoint on its own. For a household that flies internationally even once every few years, it’s the most efficient combination. Confirm the current fee and appointment rules directly with CBP before applying, because Trusted Traveler program details can change.

Clear is a private service that can speed up the identity-check portion of the airport line at participating airports. It does not replace TSA. You still go through TSA’s screening after the Clear step, so REAL ID rules still apply. Treat Clear as a paid time-saver, not an ID workaround.

Summer is a busy travel season in Hawaii, and airport lines can swing hard by day, airline bank, and weather disruption. The following are practical patterns from years of flying these airports, not official wait-time guarantees. Check live status before you leave for the airport.

• HNL mornings can back up. Early mainland departures and inter-island connections can hit the same security halls.
• OGG can spike when several mainland flights cluster together. Give yourself more room on Maui than the terminal size suggests.
• KOA and LIH often feel simpler, but not always faster. Smaller airports have fewer lanes to absorb a rush.
• ITO is usually the calmest of the main-island airports. Still, do not build an inter-island connection around a best-case security line.

Two practical moves: arrive early for mainland flights from HNL or OGG in summer, and do not plan a tight inter-island connection through HNL on a weekend afternoon. The terminal is large and the inter-island gates can sit a long walk from the mainland arrivals area.

Do these before you book, not the day of your flight:

1. Pull every traveler’s ID out and check for the star. Driver’s licenses, passport, passport card, Global Entry card, whichever you’ll use at the checkpoint. Note who has compliant ID and who doesn’t.
2. Add a backup ID for the trip. Even if your driver’s license is REAL ID, consider carrying a passport card, passport book, or Trusted Traveler card as a backup. The State Department fee page is the source to check before you apply for a passport card, because application and acceptance fees depend on age and renewal status. Validity is 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors under 16.
3. Verify your name on the boarding pass matches your ID exactly. If you booked under a maiden name or a nickname, TSA may pull you aside. Fix the booking with the airline before you fly.
4. Keep a backup copy of your ID and passport pages. Save photos to a secure cloud account you can log into from any device, or carry printed photocopies in a separate bag from the originals. A phone camera roll alone doesn’t help if the phone itself is lost or locked.
5. Save the TSA acceptable-ID page in your phone notes in case something comes up at the checkpoint.

REAL ID enforcement is now part of the normal Hawaii flight routine. Every adult flying to Hawaii this summer needs either a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, a US passport, a passport card, a Trusted Traveler card, or another TSA-accepted ID.

If you’re not sure what you have, take 30 seconds and look at your driver’s license now. The star is either there or it isn’t. If it isn’t, check current wait times for both your state DMV and the State Department’s passport processing before you decide which route fits your trip date. State DMV REAL ID timelines vary widely. If the trip is close and Hawaii is your only destination, a DMV REAL ID appointment or another TSA-accepted ID you already have is usually more realistic than trying to start a new passport application.

Trip-planning details like this aren’t the fun part of going to Hawaii. But the alternative, discovering you can’t board at the security line, is much less fun than spending 10 minutes today.
