Hawaiʻi has some of the most over-engineered resort pools on earth. Water slides, lazy rivers, swim-up bars, cabana service, saltwater grottos, infinity edges framing the Pacific. The Grand Wailea has a nine-pool hydro-circuit with waterfalls. The Four Seasons Hualālai has an oceanfront pool that looks like an art installation. The Fairmont Orchid has a private beach cove.

You don’t have to pay $1,100 a night to use them. Over the last few years — driven partly by the rise of the ResortPass booking platform and partly by hotels looking to fill empty pool chairs on slow midweek days — a real day-pass market has emerged. Some of Hawaiʻi’s biggest resorts now sell access to non-guests for $25 to $150+ per person. If you’re staying in a condo, a mid-tier hotel, or visiting for the day from a cruise ship, this is one of the best underused travel hacks in the islands.

Most Hawaiʻi resort day passes come in one of three flavors:

Pool + amenities pass ($25–$75 per adult) — general pool access, lounge chair, towels, sometimes fitness center and hot tubs. You don’t get a cabana, you don’t get priority anything, and you share the pool with hotel guests. This is the cheapest option and the one most families book.

Cabana or daybed package ($150–$500 for 2–4 people) — a reserved private cabana or daybed, usually with food and beverage credit bundled in. Worth it for couples or small groups who want shade and a reliable spot. These book out fastest for summer weekends.

Spa day pass ($75–$200 per person) — access to the spa facilities (pool, sauna, hydrotherapy circuits) with or without a treatment included. The Grand Wailea and Fairmont Orchid hydro circuits are destination-worthy on their own.

Most passes are booked through ResortPass.com or directly through the hotel’s website. Call ahead for availability on holidays and summer weekends — the posted online inventory often understates what’s actually available if you ask nicely. Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort — the most famous resort pool in Hawaiʻi. Nine interconnected pools across six levels in a 2,000-foot-long activity-pool complex, a water elevator, swim-up bar, lazy river, and seven waterslides. Day passes typically run $60–$85 per adult through ResortPass. Cabana packages start around $400. This is the best big-water-park resort pool in the state, full stop.

Hyatt Regency Maui (Kāʻanapali) — Kāʻanapali’s alternative to Wailea. Half-acre pool with a waterslide, rope bridge over a lagoon, and resident penguins. Day passes run $40–$60, making it one of the better values in Hawaiʻi.

The Kāhala Hotel & Resort — east of Diamond Head, away from the Waikīkī crowds, with its own private beach cove and a dolphin lagoon. Day passes include beach access, which is the real selling point. Runs $45–$75 through ResortPass.

Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort — five pools including the enormous “Super Pool” with a waterslide, plus a lagoon. Day passes run $40–$60 and are a great choice for families staying at smaller Waikīkī hotels without pools of their own.

Waikīkī Beach Marriott Resort & Spa — the infinity pool overlooks Kuhio Beach and gets the afternoon light. Day passes are more affordable, usually $30–$50.

Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina — the Ko Olina lagoons are the best family swim spot on the west side. Day passes at the Four Seasons are occasional but when they show up, run $80–$110. Even without the pass, the Ko Olina lagoons are public beaches.

The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay (North Shore) — the only major resort on the North Shore, rebranded from The Ritz-Carlton O’ahu, Turtle Bay under Ritz-Carlton in July 2024. The pool overlooks the ocean and the famous surf breaks. Day passes, when offered, run around $50–$75 and are best paired with a North Shore day-trip from Waikīkī. Check current ResortPass inventory before making the drive — availability is limited and inconsistent.

Fairmont Orchid (Kohala Coast) — the “Spa Without Walls” outdoor treatment rooms are the best spa experience on the island, and the pool sits on one of the best snorkel-friendly sand beaches on the Kohala Coast. Day passes typically $55–$90.

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection — recently renovated, iconic setting, three pools. Day passes are rare but worth watching for — runs $70–$120 when they show up.

Westin Hapuna Beach Resort — Hapuna Beach itself is already public, but the resort day pass gives you pool access, chairs, towels, and fitness facilities. Around $50–$75. The combination with Hapuna Beach right out the door is hard to beat.

Hilton Waikoloa Village — the most aquatic resort on the Big Island: multiple pools, a lagoon for kayaking, a 175-foot waterslide, and a dolphin program. Day passes run $45–$65 and this is the best family pick on the Kohala Coast.

Four Seasons Resort Hualālai — the crown jewel, almost never offers day passes. If one appears, grab it immediately.

Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Resort & Spa (Poʻipū) — Kauaʻi’s best resort pool, hands down. Saltwater lagoon, waterslides, a lazy river, and the adults-only infinity pool overlooking Shipwreck Beach. Day passes typically $60–$85. This is the single best day-pass value on Kauaʻi.

Kōloa Landing Resort (Poʻipū) — three pools, slides, family-oriented, lower price point. Day passes run $35–$55.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (North Shore) — newly rebranded from the former Princeville Resort, the property sits on Hanalei Bay’s best bluff overlooking the north shore. Day passes when available are on the higher end — $100–$150 — and worth it for the setting alone.

Sheraton Kauaʻi Resort (Poʻipū) — reasonable price point, two pools, oceanfront, day passes around $40–$60.

Book 1–2 weeks out for summer. Summer day-pass demand is up year over year, and popular resorts (Grand Wailea, Hilton Hawaiian Village, Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi) routinely sell out their limited inventory by the end of the week before.

Weekdays are cheaper and easier. Monday through Thursday day passes often run 20–30% less than weekend rates, and cabana availability is much better. If you have flexibility, this is the play.

Watch for resort fee stacking. Some hotels charge a “resort fee” on top of the day pass, adding $30–$50 per pass. Read the total-price line before checking out.

Parking is usually extra. Most resorts charge $30–$45 for self-parking even for day-pass holders. A few include it. Always check.

Check the cabana-versus-pass math. For two adults, a $400 cabana with $150 F&B credit nets out to around $250 net, which is 2–3x the cost of two basic day passes — but includes shade, a reserved spot, and a bar tab. For families or small groups, this math often makes sense.

Some resorts restrict day passes seasonally. The most popular resorts blackout day passes during Christmas/New Year’s and sometimes spring break. Summer is generally open, but check the calendar before you plan a hard-to-reach day trip.

Day passes are a great hack, not a substitute for staying at the resort. A few expectations to set:

You’re a guest, not a VIP. Don’t expect priority service, reserved chairs, or the best towel station. Room guests get dibs on cabanas, quiet pool chairs, and the good spots.

Peak hours are crowded. Noon to 3 p.m. on a summer Saturday is when every guest and day-pass visitor is at the pool. Early morning (9–11 a.m.) and late afternoon (3:30–6 p.m.) are less packed and more enjoyable.

Hawaiʻi law requires beach access to the public at every resort. You do not need a day pass to walk onto the beach in front of any Hawaiʻi resort. What the pass gives you is pool, chair, towel, and amenity access. The beach is always free — park in a designated public lot, walk the shoreline access path, and enjoy the same water the $1,100-a-night guests are swimming in.

Consider the swap. If you’re deciding between two mid-tier hotel nights and one luxury-resort night, sometimes one night at a great resort plus a day pass at a different one is the best value in the islands.
