Summer is the prime window for Hawaiʻi sport fishing charters. Blue marlin peak from June through September, and yellowfin tuna (ahi) and ono (wahoo) hit their best stretch over those same months per Humdinger Sportfishing’s Kona season calendar. Memorial Day weekend is two weeks out. If you want a specific top-rated boat in Kona for late June or early July, start checking inventory now rather than in June.

I’ll cover what’s actually biting in May, June, and July of 2026, which harbors are running on each island (Maui’s situation has shifted post-fire), what summer charter prices look like this year, and what separates the experienced operators from the ones who’ll just take you out for four hours and reel the lines back in. The Hawaiian Islands sit in the middle of the Pacific with no continental shelf to speak of. Per the University of Hawaiʻi SOEST report on the Kona coast, the seabed drops to roughly 1,800 meters (about 6,000 feet) within a few miles of land. That’s why the same boat can land an ahi at lunch and hook a blue marlin before sunset. The peak windows for each species are tight enough that smart visitors plan their trip month around what they actually want to catch.

Per Humdinger Sportfishing’s Kona fishing season calendar, here’s what’s hitting and when:

• Blue marlin (Pacific Blue): Peak June through September. The headline summer fish. Hawaiʻi sees marlin year-round, but summer is when the heaviest fish move through. - Yellowfin tuna (ahi): Strong May through September, peaking June through August. The fish that actually fights you for an hour. Fresh ahi off the boat goes straight to that night’s dinner. - Ono (wahoo): Peak season runs from the full moon in May through the end of September. Fast, aggressive strikes; one of the better eating fish in the islands. - Mahi-mahi (dorado): Best winter through April but still caught in summer, often as bycatch on a marlin trip. The bright iridescent yellow and green ones. - Striped marlin: Peak January through March. Wrong season for summer. - Shortbilled spearfish: Best February through April. Also wrong season.

So if you’re booking for late May through August, the targets are marlin, ahi, and ono. Mahi if you get lucky. Most summer charters are explicitly marketed as blue marlin and big game trips rather than the mixed-bag spring lineup.

If you’re flying to Hawaiʻi specifically to fish, you’re flying to Kona. Per Sport Fishing magazine’s marlin destinations breakdown and the IGFA world records database, Kona consistently ranks among the world’s top blue marlin water and holds the current IGFA all-tackle Pacific blue marlin record (a 1,376-pound fish). The Kona side gets the headline because the underwater topography drops off so fast, putting boats in deep water within minutes of leaving the harbor, and because the leeward coast typically stays calm enough to fish through most of summer.

Almost every Kona charter departs from Honokōhau Harbor, about 10 minutes north of Kailua-Kona town and 15 minutes from the Kona International Airport. The harbor is purpose-built for sport fishing, with fuel docks, ice, weighing scales, and a fish-cleaning station. If you’re staying anywhere from Kailua-Kona town up to the Kohala Coast resorts (Mauna Lani, Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Kea Beach), Honokōhau is your dock.

The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series typically runs eight tournaments March through August out of Kona. Recent years have included the Kona Kick Off in late June, the Firecracker Open and Kona Throw Down in early July, the Skins Marlin Derby in mid-July, the Big Island Marlin Tournament in late August, and It’s A Wrap to close the series. Charter availability tightens noticeably during these tournament windows, especially the back-to-back early-July events. Check the official Kona Tournaments site for the published 2026 schedule before you finalize a Kona charter date in June, July, or August. If you want a top Kona boat the first or second week of July, lock it in early.

Maui’s sport fishing fleet is in a different place this summer than it was three years ago. The August 2023 Lahaina fire destroyed Lahaina Small Boat Harbor and most of the boats that operated from it, per the Hawaiʻi DLNR/DOBOR Lahaina Small Boat Harbor information page, which continues to publish updates on harbor reconstruction. Charter operations have largely shifted south to Māʻalaea Small Boat Harbor, about 20 minutes from Kīhei and 30 minutes from Kāʻanapali per Google Maps drive times. A few West Maui operators still launch from Mala Wharf or Kāʻanapali Beach.

What this means practically:

• If you’re staying in Wailea, Kīhei, or central Maui, Māʻalaea is convenient. Under 30 minutes door-to-dock for most resorts. - If you’re staying in Kāʻanapali, Kahana, Nāpili, or Kapalua, you’re driving 35 to 50 minutes south to Māʻalaea, OR booking one of the smaller West Maui operators that still launch from Mala or Kāʻanapali Beach. - The fishery hasn’t moved. The marlin water off Maui is the same. The boats just leave from a different harbor.

Listings reflect the post-fire harbor shift, and most boats now show Māʻalaea as the actual departure point even when listed under “Lahaina.”

Almost every Oʻahu visitor charter leaves from Kewalo Basin Harbor on the south Honolulu waterfront, between downtown and Waikīkī. It’s a 10-minute Uber from most Waikīkī hotels, has secure parking, and sits next to a channel that drops to deep water within a few miles of the harbor mouth.

The water off Honolulu has serious marlin pedigree. The 1,805-pound Pacific blue caught off Oʻahu in 1970 was landed at Kewalo Basin and remains one of the heaviest blue marlin ever brought to dock. Per Sport Fishing magazine, it isn’t an IGFA-recognized record because multiple anglers fought the fish, and the standing IGFA all-tackle Pacific blue mark (1,376 pounds) was caught in Kona. Summer here means the same June-through-September marlin window as Kona, slightly shorter average runs to productive water, and the convenience of getting on a 6 AM boat without leaving Waikīkī before 5 AM.

Kauaʻi gets less marlin press than the other islands, mostly because the visitor base is smaller and the fleet is correspondingly smaller. The fishery itself is excellent, with consistent ahi, ono, and mahi-mahi off the eastern coast. Nāwiliwili Small Boat Harbor in Līhuʻe is the main charter departure point for visitor trips, about 5 minutes from the Līhuʻe airport and 25 minutes from Poʻipū per Google Maps.

Operators currently running from Nāwiliwili include Captain Don’s Sportfishing (the Happy Ryder), Imua Fishing Charters, Kauai Fishing Charters (the team behind the Deep Sea Sportfishing Kauai boats), and shared four- or six-hour trips on the 34-foot Radon listed by Kauai.com. Charter pricing has two formats. Shared trips put you on a boat with other anglers and you pay per person. Private trips book the whole boat for your group. Summer rates run higher than winter, and the most-booked Kona dates in June and July push toward the top of the range. The shared-trip ranges below are pulled from current FishingBooker listings; the private-charter ranges are HawaiiGuide estimates based on the same listings plus operator price pages.

Shared trips, per person, summer 2026:

• Kauaʻi: roughly $180 to $260 for a half-day shared trip per FishingBooker’s Kauaʻi listings, which open at $183. - Oʻahu (Honolulu): roughly $310 to $400 for a half-day shared trip per FishingBooker’s Honolulu page, opening at $313. - Maui (Māʻalaea): roughly $400 to $550 for a shared half-day per FishingBooker’s Lahaina-area page, opening at $400. - Big Island (Kona): shared options exist but most Kona boats run private only. The small fleet that does shared typically lists in the $300 to $400 range per person on FishingBooker’s Kailua-Kona listings.

Private charters, full boat (typically up to 6 anglers), summer 2026 (HawaiiGuide estimates from current operator listings):

• Half-day private (4 hours): roughly $850 to $1,400 across the islands, with Kona at the top of that range and Kauaʻi at the bottom. For reference, Maggie Joe lists 4-hour private at $1,350 on Oʻahu. - Three-quarter day private (6 hours): roughly $1,200 to $2,000. - Full-day private (8 to 9 hours): roughly $1,600 to $3,000+. Maggie Joe lists $1,750 for a full day on Oʻahu, and Fire Hatt lists $1,650 in Kona; the top tournament-class Kona boats sit at the high end.

A few things that aren’t always obvious from the booking page:

• The fish typically belongs to the boat unless the captain says otherwise. Standard Hawaiʻi practice is for the captain to decide what to do with the catch, often selling part of it to a wholesaler or restaurant to offset the boat’s costs. Most boats fillet a portion for guests; specifics vary. See the FAQs at Maggie Joe and Fire Hatt for examples, and ask your operator directly before you book if having the fish matters to you. (Trophy marlin are the exception. Most captains tag-and-release.) - Fuel surcharges happen when diesel prices spike. They’re usually rolled into the quoted rate but ask. - A 15 to 20 percent crew tip is standard and almost universally expected on top of the boat fee. Operators including Maggie Joe and Hooked Up state this directly. Budget for it.

Hawaiʻi summer charter demand follows a predictable curve. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the heavy run, July is peak (especially the back-to-back HMTS tournament weeks), August softens slightly, Labor Day weekend re-spikes, and demand tapers through September. These are HawaiiGuide booking recommendations based on years of watching Hawaiʻi inventory patterns, not guaranteed availability:

• Kona, full-day private, June or July: plan for 3 to 6 weeks of lead time. The top Kona captains during HMTS tournament weeks book significantly further out. As of May 9, you’re at the late edge of reasonable lead time for late June and early July. - Maui, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi half-day shared, June or July: 1 to 3 weeks of lead time usually works. Less competition for shared slots; private boats need more lead time. - Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day): plan at least 4 weeks ahead on every island.

One Hawaiʻi tour-booking note worth repeating. Skip same-day calls for the boats you actually want. A “we have an opening tomorrow” boat in summer is usually that way for a reason. The good captains are booked.

Reasonable Hawaiʻi charters provide all the rods, reels, lines, lures, leaders, and fighting harnesses you need. You don’t bring tackle. What you do bring is the personal stuff:

• Reef-safe, zinc-based sunscreen. Six to eight hours on a boat with no shade is brutal on skin even in cloud cover. Per the Hawaiʻi DLNR reef-safe sunscreen guidance, state law restricts the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and octocrylene. Reapply every two hours. - A polarized fishing hat and polarized sunglasses. Cuts the glare so you can actually see the strike. - A light long-sleeve sun shirt. Quick-dry, UPF 50+. Trade-wind temperatures get cool when you’re 10 miles offshore at 6 AM, then the sun comes up and you’ll want to cover skin rather than reapply sunscreen. - Non-marking deck shoes or just bare feet. Most captains don’t allow black-soled shoes on the deck because they leave marks the crew has to scrub off later. - Bonine or Dramamine if you get seasick. Many regulars take a dose the night before and another about an hour before departure, but follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist or your doctor if you’re unsure or take other medications. The leeward Kona coast is calmer than most of the world’s marlin water, but “calm” is still 2 to 4 feet of swell. If you’re prone, treat it preventively. There’s no fixing it once you’re 8 miles offshore. - A small soft-sided cooler with snacks and water if your charter doesn’t include them. Most don’t, and there’s no convenience store stop. - Cash for the crew tip. 15 to 20 percent of the boat fee is the operator-stated standard, handed directly to the deckhands.

Shoes the captain will turn away: black-soled sneakers, hiking boots, anything with a stiletto-style heel. Standard footwear: Crocs, deck shoes, water shoes, or the bare feet most regulars prefer.

Here’s the most honest piece of advice in this article. Most Hawaiʻi half-day fishing charters do not boat a marlin. The species exists, the boats know where they are, and the captains work hard. But fishing is fishing. A typical Kona half-day in summer comes back with ahi, ono, mahi-mahi, or a few smaller pelagics, and frequently no marlin at all. The boats that consistently catch big blues are the ones with paid pro anglers running 8-hour days during tournament weeks.

What you should expect from a good summer charter:

• Reasonable odds of at least one keeper (ahi, ono, or mahi-mahi) on a four- to six-hour trip in May through September. - A real shot at a marlin strike on a full-day private charter in June or July, but more trips end with ahi or ono on the deck than a marlin photo. - Beautiful water, dolphins, flying fish, and the kind of open-Pacific morning you don’t get from shore, even if the rods stay quiet.

The travelers who come off these boats happiest are the ones who booked the experience for the experience and treated whatever fish hit the deck as a bonus. The travelers who come off frustrated are the ones who paid four figures expecting a marlin photo. Set your expectations honestly and the day plays beautifully.

Three of the four main fishing harbors are awkward to reach by rideshare at 5:30 AM. Honokōhau (Big Island), Māʻalaea (Maui), and Nāwiliwili (Kauaʻi) all sit 5 to 30 minutes from major resort areas, and Uber/Lyft availability at 5 AM is unpredictable on every island except Oʻahu. Kewalo Basin in Honolulu is the exception. It’s a 10-minute rideshare from Waikīkī at any hour.
