If your Hawaii trip lands on the third weekend of August, you'll bump into a state holiday most mainland visitors have never heard of. Admission Day, usually called Statehood Day, is set by Hawaii Revised Statutes §8-1 as the third Friday in August. In 2026 that's Friday, August 21, which happens to land on the actual anniversary of Hawaii's admission as the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

For most travelers, it's a long weekend that runs Friday through Sunday with very little impact on the trip itself. Beaches stay open. Restaurants stay open. Tours run their normal schedules. A handful of practical things do close, and the day carries a layer of cultural complexity worth knowing before you ask a local about it.

Admission Day is a Hawaii state holiday, not a federal one. The federal holiday list doesn't include it. That distinction explains most of what you'll notice. State government runs the things that close. Federal services, private businesses, and the entire visitor economy mostly do not.

Closed on Friday, August 21 (per the Hawaii Department of Human Resources Development):

• State of Hawaii government offices (DLNR, DOT, motor vehicle, tax)
• City and County offices on every island (Honolulu, Maui, Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi)
• State courts
• Public libraries
• Most Hawaii-chartered banks, including First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii (confirm against each bank's posted holiday schedule before relying on a Friday branch visit)
• Public schools, if a campus is back in session

Open as usual:

• The US Postal Service and other federal offices (Pearl Harbor, NPS sites)
• Grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops
• Beaches, state and county parks, hiking trails
• Tour operators, snorkel charters, helicopter flights, luaus
• Hotel front desks, valet, concierge, all amenities
• Airports, TSA, rental car counters, taxis, rideshare
• TheBus on Oʻahu, though check thebus.org for any modified holiday runs

If you need a state-issued document, a court filing, or a state park camping permit picked up in person, do it before Friday or wait until Monday. Everything else on a typical Hawaii itinerary keeps moving.

On June 27, 1959, voters in the Territory of Hawaii were asked whether they accepted the terms of statehood under the Admission Act passed by Congress months earlier. The vote was lopsided in favor. President Dwight Eisenhower signed the proclamation on August 21, 1959, and Hawaii became the 50th state — the documents are preserved at the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

The state legislature later set Admission Day as the third Friday in August, a floating Friday rather than a fixed date, which gives Hawaii residents a long weekend without bouncing the holiday around the work week.

That's the surface story. The fuller one starts a lot earlier.

The Hawaiian Kingdom was a sovereign nation in the late 1800s, with treaties with the United States, Britain, France, and Japan. On January 17, 1893, a group of American and European business interests, backed by US Marines from the USS Boston, overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani and dissolved the kingdom. The upstairs room where she was later imprisoned still stands inside Iolani Palace, four blocks from where the state legislature meets today.

What came next is the chronology most US history textbooks compress into a paragraph: annexation in 1898, territorial status in 1900, statehood in 1959. In 1993, on the 100th anniversary of the overthrow, President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-150, the Apology Resolution, formally apologizing on behalf of the United States for the overthrow and acknowledging that the Native Hawaiian people had never directly relinquished their claims to sovereignty.

For many Native Hawaiians and a meaningful share of long-time residents, Admission Day is not a day to celebrate. Some commemorate Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day on July 31, which marks the 1843 moment when British naval commander Admiral Richard Thomas restored Hawaiian sovereignty after a five-month occupation (see Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea for background). Others quietly let the third Friday of August pass without comment.

You don't need to wade into that as a visitor. But it's worth knowing that the holiday sits on a layered history, and that "happy Statehood Day" is not the safe small-talk you might assume it is.

If you want to spend part of the day actually engaging with Hawaii's civic history rather than skipping past it, downtown Honolulu does most of the work for you. You can walk between several of the major sites in an afternoon.

• Iolani Palace: guided and self-guided tours run on Fridays. Book the docent-led tour for the throne room and the imprisonment-room story, the part that's easy to skim if you're on your own. Check the palace site for current hours and reservation requirements before you go.
• Kawaiahaʻo Church: the 1842 coral-block church a few blocks down King Street where Hawaiian monarchs were baptized, married, and lay in state. Worth the ten minutes even if you're not religious.
• Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific: a federal site, so open. Quiet, panoramic, and a different kind of context for the day.
• Bishop Museum in Kalihi for the Hawaiian Hall, which the museum describes as the showcase for its collection of Hawaiian artifacts.

Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial and the surrounding museums are also open, since they're federal and not affected by the state holiday. The program itself is free, but timed passes booked through recreation.gov carry a small non-refundable reservation fee per ticket. Walk-up slots are limited and go fast, so reserve ahead.

Traffic and crowds. Admission Day weekend is a real long weekend for locals. Friday afternoon traffic out of Honolulu, onto the H-3 toward Kailua or up the H-2 toward the North Shore, runs heavier than usual. If you're moving across the island that afternoon, leave earlier or later than the 3 to 6 p.m. window. Late-August beach parks on every island fill up by mid-morning Saturday, so get to Lanikai, Waimea Bay, Big Beach, or Hapuna early.

Tours. Operators run normal schedules but book up quickly for Admission Day weekend, especially anything on water: snorkel boats, sunset sails, whale-watching repositioning runs, even Hanauma Bay reservations. If a specific experience is the anchor of your trip, lock it in this far out rather than hoping for a walk-up slot. One small piece of etiquette. If a local mentions the holiday, follow their cue. Some treat it as an ordinary day off. Some don't. Asking what they did with the long weekend is fine. Wishing someone "happy Statehood Day" is a coin flip you don't need to take.

August 21, 2026 is a Friday, a state holiday, and a long weekend Hawaii residents will notice more than visitors will. State and county offices are closed. Beaches, tours, restaurants, hotels, and the airport are not. If you want to make something of the day, downtown Honolulu and Punchbowl give you a thoughtful afternoon.
