Hawaii’s 2026 visitor numbers still look strong on spending, but the details have shifted since the first February release. DBEDT’s latest visitor statistics show the same basic pattern continuing into spring: arrival growth is modest, but spending is holding up because visitors are spending more per day.

Then March happened. Two back-to-back Kona low storms triggered flooding, road closures, and a wave of trip cancellations. Forward bookings for summer softened. If you’re planning a late June, July, or August trip, here’s what the data actually tells you — and where the remaining booking leverage still exists.

The early 2026 DBEDT releases showed visitor spending growing faster than visitor counts. The spending story is more interesting than the arrivals story.

Maui posted clear signs of post-wildfire recovery in early 2026. Hotels are full again in many resort areas, restaurants are staffed, and the West Maui corridor that was devastated in August 2023 has rebuilt enough tourism infrastructure to absorb meaningful visitor demand.

Translation: Hawaii can feel economically busy even when arrival counts are not surging. The practical pressure for travelers shows up in hotel rates, restaurant reservations, and activity availability more than in the raw headcount.

The U.S. West Coast and East Coast markets drove most of the growth. Domestic travelers account for more than three-quarters of Hawaii’s visitors, and U.S. East arrivals were one of the strongest April 2026 growth points in DBEDT’s latest release.

Japan continues its gradual recovery, but it has not fully returned to its pre-2020 peak. The weaker yen makes Hawaii expensive for Japanese travelers, so the visitors who do come tend to be higher-spending travelers.

Canada went the other direction in early 2026. Fewer Canadians are coming, but the ones who do are generally staying longer and spending more per person.

The Kona low storms in March dumped record rainfall on parts of O’ahu and the Big Island. Flooding closed roads, several beach parks took damage, and airlines issued travel waivers. The headlines rattled prospective summer visitors.

Forward bookings for June through August appeared softer in the weeks after the storms. That softening created an unusual opportunity. Hotels that were projecting full summer occupancy had inventory to fill, and airlines that added capacity — Delta’s new Minneapolis-Maui route, Southwest’s return to Hawaii from Ontario and Burbank — still need to keep seats full through the rest of summer.

When supply rises and demand softens, prices can drop. The best remaining opportunities are less likely to be peak holiday weeks and more likely to show up on midweek flights, shoulder weeks, and properties with flexible cancellation inventory.

If you’re planning a late-summer Hawaii trip, the easy 8-to-10-week booking window has mostly passed for June and is narrowing for July. August travelers still have more flexibility, especially outside the busiest school-break weeks.

Three tactics that consistently save money on summer Hawaii airfare:

Fly Tuesday or Wednesday. Midweek departures are often cheaper than Friday or Saturday flights on the same route, especially when airlines are trying to fill shoulder-week seats.

Book red-eyes from the West Coast when the fare difference is meaningful. Late-night departures from LAX, SFO, and SEA to Honolulu can price below daytime flights, and you land early enough to gain a full day.

But as of the June 19 review, some late-summer booking softness still matters. Book flights and cars before the final rush, lock in cancellable hotel rates where possible, and expect the best remaining value to sit outside peak holiday dates.
