Our Hawaii Dining Cost Calculator gives each “Kids” entry 65% of an adult food allowance. If your teenager plans to order the same meal you do, test the budget with an adult allowance for that person.
This is a food-budget choice. Keep everyone’s actual ages unchanged when booking flights, tours, admission tickets, or lodging.
Start with your island, trip length, and meal choices in the calculator. Its dining benchmarks are dated May 1, 2026. Leave alcohol off for this food comparison; budget any adult drinks separately. Keep the other choices, including snacks, fixed while comparing the Adults and Kids entries.
Using its 65% child allowance, two adults and two kids count as 3.3 adult food allowances: 2 + (2 × 0.65). Counting all four people at the adult allowance brings that to 4. The party still has four people; only the food estimate changes.
| Calculator entries | Adult food allowances |
|---|---|
| 2 adults + 2 kids | 3.3 |
| 3 adults + 1 kid | 3.65 |
| 4 adults + 0 kids | 4 |
Four adult allowances are about 21% more than 3.3: (4 − 3.3) ÷ 3.3 × 100 ≈ 21.2%. That is the increase over the two-adult, two-child estimate when the other settings stay fixed.
For scale, if your starting estimate were a hypothetical $1,000, the same comparison would put the adult-allowance version at about $1,212. This illustrates the percentage; it is not a current restaurant quote or a guaranteed bill. The higher estimate already includes the increase.
Use the comparison to test your assumption, rather than treating the child allowance as a discount your family will receive.
Think about likely orders before choosing the child allowance for a meal budget.
The calculator’s child allowance does not establish restaurant eligibility. On October 29, 2026, Duke’s Waikīkī’s menus page linked a keiki menu for kids 10 and under. A teenager falls outside that published range.
Check the current menu at each restaurant you plan to visit. Do not assume one restaurant’s age limit applies elsewhere, or that qualifying for a children’s menu means your child will choose from it. If a younger child expects a regular meal, compare an adult allowance for that child too.
Count the meals you expect to buy, starting with arrival and departure days. Seven nights need not mean seven full food days. If breakfast is included with your stay, adjust the breakfast allowance without removing lunch and dinner from those days.
Use the Hawaii Eats guides to choose meals worth planning around, then replace broad allowances with actual menu prices where you can. Check tax, service charges, tips, drinks, and snacks when assembling the final budget, accounting for costs already included so you do not count them twice.
An adult allowance for a teenager is a planning comparison, not an instruction to spend more. Choose the estimate that best matches what your family expects to order.
Compare the food allowance, then choose where to eat.
