The best souvenir from Hawaiʻi isn’t a $40 tourist-shop aloha shirt made in China. Thrift shopping in Hawaiʻi is a different game than the mainland. Hawaiʻi’s swap meets, thrift stores, and vintage shops are scattered across all four main islands. Some are well-known (the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is practically a tourist attraction), but the smaller spots are where the real finds live. Here’s where to dig.

Oʻahu has the deepest thrift and vintage scene by a wide margin — more people, more turnover, more inventory.

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet & Marketplace. The biggest open-air market in Hawaiʻi. Currently relocated to the Upper Halawa parking lot (99-500 Salt Lake Blvd, Aiea) while the new Aloha Stadium is under construction. Open Wednesday, Saturday 8 AM–3 PM, and Sunday 6:30 AM–3 PM. Admission is $2 ($1 kamaʻāina/military, free for kids under 12). Over 400 vendors sell everything from fresh produce and plate lunches to clothing, jewelry, artwork, and souvenirs. Bailey’s Antiques and Aloha Shirts. 517 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu. This is the shop. Open since 1980, Bailey’s has over 15,000 vintage aloha shirts in stock — silks, rayons, cottons, deadstock, collector-grade pieces from the 1940s through the 2000s. Prices range from $10 for a well-loved everyday shirt to several thousand for rare 1950s prints. Even if you don’t buy, it’s worth 30 minutes just to browse. Tin Can Mailman. 1026 Nuʻuanu Ave in Chinatown. If you collect Hawaiiana ephemera — vintage postcards, old maps, first-edition Hawaiian history books, antique menus, surf photography prints — this is your spot. The deepest curated collection of Hawaiian printed material in Honolulu, tucked into a Chinatown storefront.

Savers. Two Oʻahu locations: Moiliili (2220 S King St, Honolulu) and Waipahu (94-300 Farrington Hwy). Monday–Saturday 9 AM–8 PM, Sunday 10 AM–7 PM. Savers is a mainland chain, but the Hawaiʻi locations are stocked with island-specific inventory that mainland stores never see — genuine aloha shirts for $5–$15, muumuus, board shorts, local brand tees, and a housewares section full of tiki mugs, Hawaiian-print ceramics, and koa wood items. Maui’s thrift scene is smaller than Oʻahu’s but still produces gems, especially the Saturday swap meet.

Trinity Treasures Thrift Shop. 100 Kulanihakoi St, Kīhei. Open Thursday–Friday 10 AM–1 PM, Saturday 8 AM–noon. A small church-run thrift with limited hours but surprisingly good inventory for its size. Worth a quick stop if you’re in Kīhei on the right day.

The Big Island doesn’t have a traditional swap meet, but its farmers markets have enough secondhand and craft vendors to scratch the same itch.

Makuʻu Farmers Market. 15-2131 Keaʻau-Pāhoa Hwy, Pāhoa. Sunday mornings — check the market’s posted hours before you drive out, they shift seasonally. Over 150 vendors spread across five acres — this is the closest thing to a flea market on the Big Island. You’ll find produce and prepared food alongside secondhand clothing, vintage surf gear, handmade jewelry, and local crafts. Vehicle entry is a nominal flat fee (typically a couple of dollars). The ReStores are donation-based, so inventory is unpredictable — but the prices are rock-bottom and you’ll occasionally find koa wood furniture or vintage Hawaiian art that a local family cleared out of a garage.

Kauaʻi’s scene is the smallest of the four islands, but the handful of shops here are beloved by locals and worth a detour.

Hana Hou Thrift Shop. 4523 Ioane Rd, Unit E1, Anahola (behind Anahola Cafe). Tuesday–Saturday, hours vary — call ahead at (808) 651-5490 to confirm. Clean, well-organized, and surprisingly deep for a rural thrift store. Locals donate generously here, and the Hawaiiana section (vintage prints, books, home decor) is strong. Widely regarded as one of the best thrift stores on Kauaʻi.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore — Hanapēpē. Good for vintage dresses, aloha shirts, and furniture at donation-bin prices. The Hanapēpē location benefits from the Art Night crowd that keeps the town lively on Friday evenings.

Warehouse 3540. 3540 Koloa Rd, Kalāheo — South Shore. Not strictly a thrift store — it’s a collective marketplace with over a dozen locally owned small businesses under one roof. You’ll find artisan goods, handmade jewelry, vintage-adjacent finds, and local-brand clothing. A good stop if you’re staying in Poʻipū and want something more interesting than resort gift shops. Vintage aloha shirts. The crown jewel of Hawaiʻi thrifting. Look for rayon fabric (it drapes differently than polyester), coconut shell or wood buttons, and labels from Reyn Spooner, Kahala, Tori Richard, Avanti, and Sun Surf. A genuine 1960s or 1970s rayon aloha shirt in good condition is worth $50–$200 to collectors — and you might find one for $8 at Goodwill. Koa wood items. Picture frames, bowls, jewelry boxes, bookends. Koa is endemic to Hawaiʻi and expensive when purchased new. Thrift stores occasionally get koa items from estate donations, and they’re almost always underpriced.
