Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park drew 1,433,593 visitors in 2024 and 1,620,294 in 2023. I would not plan a summer visit as though it were a normal stop-and-go park day. The Kīlauea Visitor Center has been closed since February 2025 for renovation. That closure changes the rhythm of a summit visit.

Construction is also reshaping access around the summit. Kīlauea’s eruption sequence can change conditions fast. Check current USGS updates before you drive up. The park remains worth visiting, but treat the current conditions page like your trailhead sign, not an optional extra.

The Kīlauea Visitor Center closed on February 17, 2025 for extensive renovation. The old building was too small and outdated for current visitation. The work adds accessibility improvements, relocated and improved restrooms, more visitor space, and new exhibits.

The renovated center will include a covered open-air hālau on the west end, fully accessible facilities, an expanded Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association store, and bilingual exhibits in English and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. Temporary visitor services have moved to the Welcome Center at Kīlauea Military Camp (KMC), west of the closed visitor center on Crater Rim Drive. Rangers and the park store serve visitors there. Pick up trail maps, get Junior Ranger activity books, stamp your passport, and browse the HPPA bookstore. Check the NPS basic info page for current hours.

The Uēkahuna observation deck sits on the former Jaggar Museum and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory site, which was removed after the 2018 summit damage. It is open, subject to operational conditions. During an eruption, it is one of several possible summit viewing areas. Check NPS eruption-viewing guidance for the legal, open viewing locations that day.

The Volcano Art Center Gallery next to the closed visitor center remains open. You will find work by local artists inside the original 1877 Volcano House building. Confirm current gallery hours before you go.

The active construction schedule keeps the Kīlauea Visitor Center, its restrooms, sidewalk, lānai, and roughly half of its parking area closed. Elsewhere around the summit, expect reduced parking, construction delays, and intermittent access restrictions. Conditions can move around the park like a shifting roadblock, so do not build a tight itinerary around one trailhead or overlook.

Separately, the two-year infrastructure project to repair, remove, and replace facilities damaged by the 2018 summit collapse remains underway. I use the NPS construction schedule as the source for access restrictions and parking changes.

Before you drive down, check the NPS conditions page for current trail and road status. Chain of Craters Road is open to its coastal turnaround, but there is no vehicle through route beyond it. Pack layers. The Kīlauea summit is about 4,000 feet above sea level and may be 12 to 15 degrees cooler than sea level, according to NPS weather guidance.

Episode 44 showed how fast Kīlauea can shift from quiet to active. Episode 44 lasted 8.5 hours. Lava fountains from the north vent reached 800 feet at peak, and the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center reported a plume up to 16,000 feet above sea level. Southerly winds carried tephra north of the crater. Tephra fell around Kīlauea Military Camp, material as large as 10 inches was reported in Volcano Golf Course subdivision, and fine ash and Pele’s hair reached Hilo. USGS maintains the episode record and current eruption information.

Since Episode 44, the NPS eruption-viewing page has described more than 50 eruptions from Halemaʻumaʻu since December 2024. That is a later cumulative count, not a revision of Episode 44’s label. An eruptive episode can last only hours. If activity begins while you are on-island, check official guidance immediately rather than assuming a viewing area will stay open through the evening. Visibility, access, wind, and lava glow can all change without notice.

Volcanic emissions, or vog, are part of the calculation. Hazardous volcanic gases and particulate matter can affect air quality downwind during eruptions. People with respiratory conditions should check AirNow’s current air-quality information and the NPS conditions page before visiting.

Entry is $30 per vehicle for a seven-day pass. The $55 Hawaiʻi Tri-Park Annual Pass is valid for 12 months and covers Hawaiʻi Volcanoes, Haleakalā on Maui, and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau. It can make sense if you are visiting more than one of those parks or returning within the year.

According to NPS directions, the park is about 30 miles southwest of Hilo via Highway 11, roughly a 45-minute drive. From Kailua-Kona, NPS estimates 2 to 2.5 hours via Highway 11. Hele-On Route 11 stops at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, but NPS says there is no shuttle or public transit within the park. Book a rental through Discount Hawaii Car Rental for Big Island rates if you want freedom to move between trailheads. Fuel up before tackling Chain of Craters Road. I would start that drive with enough fuel to return without needing a stop.

A half day can cover Crater Rim Drive, Uēkahuna, Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), and a short walk if parking and conditions cooperate. Give yourself a full day for Chain of Craters Road and the Kīlauea Iki Trail. The standard Kīlauea Iki loop from the overlook is 3.3 miles and crosses the hardened lava lake. Check NPS trail details before setting out. If an eruption is active, use the current NPS viewing guidance to decide whether an evening stop makes sense.

Bring rain gear and layers. Summit weather can be rainy and chilly in any season, while conditions elsewhere in the park vary sharply by elevation. Good waterproof hiking shoes make lava-rock trails far more comfortable than sandals.
