Wildfire planning in Hawaii is an address-and-route decision, not a statewide prediction. Dry vegetation, wind, power infrastructure, and evacuation access vary sharply within one island. A warning or outage in one district does not prove that every visitor area is affected, but it can still change roads, lodging services, and a full day’s plan.

Hawaiian Electric may use a Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, as a last-line wildfire-prevention measure in designated high-risk areas on Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island. The utility evaluates multiple conditions; a National Weather Service Red Flag Warning does not automatically mean power will be shut off.

Read the utility’s official PSPS process and notices. Its Watch, Warning, Outage, Restoration Begins, and Restoration Complete stages describe different levels of action. Do not report a Watch as an outage.

Use the utility’s current PSPS area map for the exact hotel, condo, or rental address. Then ask the property:

• whether guest contact information is enrolled in local alerts;
• which lights, elevators, gates, water pumps, and room locks need power;
• whether backup power serves guest rooms or only life-safety systems;
• how the property communicates an evacuation or prolonged outage; and
• what refund or relocation terms apply if essential services fail.

“The hotel has a generator” is incomplete. Ask what the generator actually powers.

Keep phones and a power bank charged, download maps, and save the property’s address and county emergency contacts offline. Maintain enough fuel or vehicle charge to leave the area without searching for an operating station. If medication, refrigeration, mobility equipment, or another medical need depends on electricity, make a specific backup with the lodging and medical provider before arrival.

An announced PSPS can begin with limited notice and restoration requires inspection after dangerous conditions pass. Do not promise yourself a short outage. The utility’s visitor page explains that both planned PSPS events and unplanned protective outages may affect accommodations.

Fire weather: use the National Weather Service Honolulu fire-weather page.

Utility status: use Hawaiian Electric’s PSPS and outage notices for the affected area and restoration stage.

Evacuation and public safety: use the named county emergency-management or civil-defense agency. The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency links statewide preparedness resources, but county instructions control a local evacuation.

Visitor routing: use Hawaii Travel Alerts and the responsible land manager before driving to a park, trail, or attraction. A map pin is not permission to cross a closure.

Obey fire bans and posted restrictions. Do not park a hot vehicle on dry grass, drag chains, discard smoking material, use prohibited fireworks, or enter a closed dry-land area. If you see smoke, fire, or immediate danger, call 911 with the clearest location you can provide.

Stay on legal roads and established parking. A scenic pullout is not useful when it blocks an engine, ambulance, or evacuation route.

Keep at least one day that can move between districts. Avoid stacking a nonrefundable remote activity, a long dry-land drive, and a flight on the same day during elevated fire weather. If officials ask people to avoid an area, substitute another district rather than waiting at the closure.

Our verdict: do not cancel a statewide trip because one high-risk zone appears on a map. Do choose lodging and daily routes with official alerts, power dependence, and a workable exit in mind.
