Hawaiʻi is a living place, not a backdrop for a vacation. These Hawaiian culture do’s and don’ts will help you move through the islands with respect and avoid the kind of mistake that turns a good trip sideways.

Some are laws with real penalties. Others are local customs. Paying attention makes your trip smoother and respects the people who call these islands home.

A lei may welcome you or mark a celebration. It may also be given at a farewell. If someone offers you one and you are comfortable accepting it, receive it with thanks. If you need to decline, do so kindly.

There is no single rule for how every family gives or wears lei. Follow the lead of the person offering it. For pregnant recipients, tradition calls for an open-ended lei rather than a closed circle; the closed circle is associated with the umbilical cord wrapping around a baby’s neck, as reported by the Associated Press.

Do not assume a wilted lei belongs in the ocean or on a trail. Ask the giver or host how they would like it handled, or compost it where appropriate. The Bishop Museum has published ideas for reusing and recycling lei.

Removing shoes before entering a home is a common local custom. A Hawaiʻi state-hosted cultural-guidelines document says footwear should be left outside the door, neatly lined up. Follow your host’s lead.

Look for slippers lined up outside or a shoe rack by the door. A posted request is even clearer. Vacation rentals and businesses set their own policies, so follow their instructions. A home is not a hotel lobby; treat it accordingly.

Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, are protected under the Endangered Species Act. NOAA recommends at least 10 feet of space, whether the turtle is on shore or in the water. Never touch protected wildlife. Do not chase or feed it. Harassment can violate federal law, and ESA civil penalties can exceed $50,000 in some cases. NOAA explains the potential penalties here.

Hawaiian monk seals are endangered. NOAA’s current estimate is about 1,600 seals. Keep at least 50 feet away. Give mothers and pups 150 feet of space. NOAA’s Hawaiʻi wildlife-viewing guidance sets out those recommended distances.

If an area is roped off, stay outside it and follow the posted instructions. A rope line may protect wildlife or restoration work. Your zoom lens is the right tool here.

Hawaiʻi law restricts the sale, offer for sale, or distribution for sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. The Legislature’s Act 104 explains the rule and its coral-protection findings.

The statewide law regulates sales, not a visitor carrying sunscreen into Hawaiʻi. Maui County has separate rules that ban the sale, distribution, and use of non-mineral sunscreen without a prescription. Choose a mineral product with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide listed as an active ingredient. Review the county’s sunscreen ordinance, then check the current Maui County sunscreen guidance before visiting Maui.

“Reef-safe” is not a reliable substitute for checking active ingredients. Read the active-ingredient panel instead of trusting a front-label claim. If you shop online, this Amazon search can help you compare ingredient labels before your trip.

Heiau are Hawaiian places of worship and ceremonial sites. Many include stone structures. Some, including Hale o Keawe at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, continue to function as religious sites for Native Hawaiians. The National Park Service explains that living connection.

Do not climb or sit on these places. Do not rearrange stones or treat a sacred site as a photo prop. At Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park on Hawaiʻi Island, check the current visitor rules before you go and follow all posted directions.

Rules and access change by site. If a stone feature looks old, sacred, or protected, keep your distance and do not enter unless the site clearly permits it.

Removing natural materials from a national park generally violates federal law under 36 CFR §2.1. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s rules protect lava and other natural mineral resources. Leave them where they are.

Do not build new rock stacks or rearrange rocks in protected cultural landscapes. Stonework can be historic evidence, and moving it turns a site into a puzzle with pieces in the wrong places.

Outside national parks, rules depend on the land manager and location. The simple visitor standard still works: leave natural and cultural features where you found them.

Hawaiian is a living language and one of Hawaiʻi’s two official state languages, alongside English. The Hawaiʻi Constitution recognizes both languages. ʻAha Pūnana Leo runs Hawaiian-language programs that support ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi revitalization.

You do not need fluency. Start with “mahalo,” meaning thank you, and make a good-faith effort with place names. Pause at the ʻokina in Hawaiʻi rather than running the word together.

This does not create an unrestricted right to cross private resort land, use private facilities, or ignore a rope line. Use lawful public access points. Respect posted closures. Respect wildlife buffers and permitted events too. Public shoreline rights and private upland property can sit side by side; know which ground you are standing on.

Use your horn for safety, not impatience. If another driver lets you merge or waves you through, a small wave back is a decent thank-you. Keep the road calm instead of turning every delay into a contest.

Slow down in residential areas, where people may be walking near or in the roadway. On narrow two-lane roads, if you choose to let faster traffic pass, wait for a safe and legal place to do it. Never stop in a travel lane to take a photo.

If a surf instructor spent an hour getting you into waves, tip with that effort in mind. If a shuttle driver got you to an early launch on time, the same principle applies.

The shaka, made with the thumb and pinky extended, became Hawaiʻi’s official state gesture in 2024. Its meaning depends on context. It can communicate a warm hello, thanks, or simple acknowledgment.

You do not need to perform the shaka on command. If someone offers one, return it if it feels natural. A genuine nod, wave, or mahalo carries the same basic message: I see your courtesy.

You are a guest. The standard is not merely avoiding a fine or staying out of trouble. Leave less pressure on the places and people around you.

Pick up your trash and stay on marked trails. Spend with locally owned businesses when you can. Ask before photographing a cultural practice or a person. If you book a cultural activity, check who leads it and what the experience includes before you pay.

A fishing spot or family story is not content for you to collect. Treat what people share with you as a gift, and carry that respect through the rest of your trip.
