Plenty of visitors leave Hawaii with a tattoo. Some get something meaningful from a respected local artist. Others walk into a Waikiki strip-mall shop, point at a “tribal” flash sheet, and end up with a generic Polynesian-looking design that means nothing to anyone — including the artist who drew it. The difference matters, and not just for aesthetic reasons.

Hawaiian tattooing is a living tradition called kakau. It is sacred, it has rules, and the patterns carry meaning that goes back centuries. If you are thinking about getting tattooed in Hawaii — especially with a Hawaiian or Polynesian design — there are some things you should understand before you book the appointment.

Kakau is the Native Hawaiian art of tattooing. The word means “to strike” or “to tap” — a reference to the traditional method, where ink made from kukui nut soot is tapped into the skin with a comb-like tool (moli) made from albatross bone, fashioned into a small rake and struck with a wooden mallet. It is slow, painful, and ceremonial.

Pre-contact Hawaiians wore kakau as a form of identity. Different patterns indicated genealogy (your family line), social rank, accomplishments, spiritual protection, and life events. Bishop Museum’s collections document elaborate full-body designs on chiefs and warriors that took years to complete.

The practice nearly disappeared after Western contact. Missionaries discouraged it, and machine tattooing displaced the traditional methods through the 20th century. Today, a small group of practitioners — most notably the late Keone Nunes, who passed in 2024 and was the most prominent kakau revival figure — have brought traditional hand-tap kakau back as a serious cultural practice. His students and other revivalists continue the work today.

Traditional kakau is not for tourists. Authentic kakau practitioners — the ones using bone tools and the hand-tap method — generally do not tattoo visitors at all, or only after extensive cultural conversation and only with patterns that have meaning for that person. This is not gatekeeping for its own sake. Kakau patterns historically encoded specific genealogical and spiritual information, and putting someone’s family lineage on a stranger’s arm violates the entire foundation of the practice.

Generic “tribal” designs are usually appropriation. The flash sheets in tourist shops with vaguely Polynesian-looking shark teeth, waves, and turtles often combine elements from Hawaiian, Samoan, Maori, Marquesan, and Tahitian traditions into something that means nothing in any of those cultures. Wearing a generic “tribal sleeve” you saw on a Pinterest board is closer to costume than tradition.

Specific symbols you should not request. Avoid asking for designs that resemble specific Hawaiian deities (Pele, Lono, Kanaloa), royal genealogies, or sacred site iconography (like petroglyphs from Puako and Mamalahoa or other heiau). These have spiritual weight to Native Hawaiians, and tattooing them as souvenirs is widely considered disrespectful.

What is okay. A custom design that means something to you — a memorial to a parent, a marker of a specific trip, an image you love — done by any skilled artist in Hawaii. The location and the experience are still meaningful. You do not need a “Hawaiian-style” design to commemorate Hawaii. A simple plumeria, an ocean wave, a date, or your own personal symbol works fine.

Research the studio’s reputation. Read reviews on Google and Yelp. Look at the artist’s portfolio on Instagram. Avoid shops with no online presence or generic flash-sheet websites. The good shops in Hawaii have years of work documented and detailed bios.

Look for artists who collaborate with Native Hawaiian designers. Some non-Hawaiian artists work with Hawaiian cultural consultants to ensure designs are appropriate. Others have spent decades in Hawaii and built deep relationships with the cultural community. Both are legitimate paths.

Ask honest questions. “Is this design culturally appropriate for me to wear?” is a fair question. A good artist will answer it honestly and tell you when something would be a problem. A bad artist will just take your money.

Pay attention to consent and explanation. Reputable Hawaiian artists will explain what a design means before tattooing it. If the artist cannot tell you what their own pattern means, that is a red flag.

Be prepared for a consultation. Most respected artists in Hawaii do not do walk-ins for custom Hawaiian work. Expect to book a consultation 2-4 weeks ahead of your trip, then a separate appointment for the tattoo itself. Some traditional kakau practitioners require multiple meetings before they will agree to do the work.

The list below focuses on studios with established reputations and long histories in the islands. This is not exhaustive — there are many talented artists working in Hawaii — and reputations change. Always do your own research before booking.

Oahu

Always verify the current state of any studio before going. Hours, artists, and ownership change.

Hawaii’s beach culture is brutal on fresh tattoos. Sun exposure, salt water, and chlorine all damage healing ink. If you get tattooed on day three of a seven-day trip, you will spend the next four days babysitting it — no swimming, no beach lounging, no direct sun. Plan accordingly. Many people get their tattoo on the last day or two of a trip for exactly this reason.

Bring sunscreen and clean clothing for aftercare. A reef-safe tattoo aftercare balm is worth packing if you know you are getting tattooed. Once the tattoo has fully healed (2-4 weeks), apply high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen on the area whenever it sees direct sun — Hawaii’s UV is intense.

Pricing. Custom tattoos in Hawaii start around $150-200 for a small piece and run $200+ per hour for larger work. Established artists charge higher rates than walk-in shops. Cheap is rarely a good sign in tattooing.

Tipping is standard. 15-20% of the tattoo price is customary in Hawaii as on the mainland.

Bring photo ID. All Hawaii tattoo studios require government-issued ID and will not tattoo anyone under 18 without parental consent.

A tattoo is one way to mark a Hawaii trip, but it is not the only way — and frankly, for most visitors, there are better options. If your goal is to feel a real connection to Hawaiian culture, consider these:

Attend a real luau, not a buffet show. Some Hawaii luaus are tourist productions; others are serious cultural performances. The Old Lahaina Luau on Maui, the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu, and the Smith Family Garden Luau on Kauai all have strong cultural reputations.

Take a Hawaiian language or hula class. Many community centers and resorts offer drop-in classes. Even one session changes how you see the rest of the trip.
