If you’re staying on the Kona side of the Big Island, the show is across the island in Hilo. Check the live route and road conditions before leaving. Closures can change the drive.

A Hilo-side show day works best in this order:

1. Start at Hilo Farmers Market, at Mamo Street and Kamehameha Avenue. Check the official market site for the current schedule and larger market days before you go.

2. Give the orchid show two or three hours for the displays and plant-sale tables. On Sunday, start at the show when it opens and use the afternoon for Hilo.

That makes a full East Hawaiʻi day without turning the orchid show into a rushed stop between long drives.

The Hilo Orchid Show only runs three days a year, but Big Island orchid culture runs year-round. If your travel dates miss late July, two flower-focused stops are worth considering.

Akatsuka Orchid Gardens is a commercial nursery on Volcano Road near Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Visitor access and hours have changed, so check the garden’s current contact page before making a detour.

Hawaiʻi Tropical Botanical Garden on Onomea Bay north of Hilo is not orchid-specific, but it puts tropical flowers in a dense rainforest setting. Use the garden’s current visitor page for hours, admission, and trip timing.

Neither has the show’s concentration of growers and displays. Both make a solid non-show-day flower stop.
