The Prince Lot Hula Festival was launched in 1978 under the Moanalua Gardens Foundation, with kumu hula Nalani Olds among its original leaders. The festival honors Prince Lot Kapuāiwa — who later reigned as King Kamehameha V from 1863 to 1872 — and his role in keeping public hula alive during the 19th century, a period when the dance was suppressed by missionary influence on the Hawaiian Kingdom. Kapuāiwa famously hosted paʻina (Hawaiian gatherings) at his summer retreat in Moanalua Valley on Oʻahu, where chant and hula were performed openly at a time when neither were welcome in polite Honolulu society. That act of cultural insistence is a big part of the reason hula survived intact into the 20th century, and it’s why the festival still carries his name today. What makes Prince Lot distinct from Hawaiʻi’s other big hula event, the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, is the “non-competitive” part. Merrie Monarch is a world-class competition — tense, high-stakes, broadcast live statewide, tickets nearly impossible to score. Prince Lot is the opposite: hālau come to dance, not to be judged, and the mood is celebratory rather than competitive. Hula masters, senior kumu, beginning keiki groups, and visiting hālau from the other islands all share the same stage across the weekend. It’s hula as living practice, not hula as sport.

The structure: Two days — for 2026, Friday and Saturday, July 17–18 — each running roughly from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. (confirm the exact day-of times on the official site). Performances rotate through the day with short breaks. You can come for an hour or stay for the whole weekend — there’s no ticket to validate, no assigned seating, no pressure.

The performers: Historically, 20–30 hula hālau across the two days, drawn from Oʻahu and the neighbor islands. Each hālau performs a set of several hula, usually mixing hula kahiko (ancient, chant-and-gourd accompanied) and hula ʻauana (modern, string-instrument accompanied). Getting there. The Royal Hawaiian Center sits on Kalākaua Avenue in the center of Waikīkī, between the Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikīkī hotels. If you’re staying in Waikīkī, you can almost certainly walk — that’s the big upside of the 2026 move. Coming from elsewhere on the island, the center has a parking garage (entrances on Royal Hawaiian Avenue and Seaside Avenue) with validated parking when you spend at center shops or restaurants, and both TheBus and the Waikīkī Trolley run along Kalākaua Avenue. Driving your own car into Waikīkī on a weekend is the least convenient option — leave it at the hotel if you can.

What to bring. A folding chair, a hat, sunscreen, water, and a sarong or light blanket if you want to sit on the grass. Honolulu in mid-July is hot and sunny — expect mid-80s, high humidity, afternoon trade winds. The festival area has some shade but most of the seating is on open lawn. This is one of those “reef-safe sunscreen and a refillable water bottle” days.

Kids are welcome. Genuinely. Hula is a family tradition and you will see plenty of local families with strollers, kids running around, and grandmothers holding babies while older keiki perform on stage. There’s no “shush the toddler” vibe. If anything, it’s one of the most kid-friendly cultural events in Hawaiʻi.

Photography etiquette. Still photos from the audience are fine and expected. Do NOT walk up to the stage apron to take photos, do not use flash, and do not record a full performance on your phone — short clips for personal memory are fine, but extended recording is considered disrespectful to the hālau. If you’re not sure whether a specific moment (a chant invocation, a sacred hula) is appropriate to photograph, put the phone down and just watch. You will remember more that way anyway.

Any of them adds genuine context to what you just watched.

Morning hula, afternoon Bishop Museum. About 20 minutes’ drive away in Kalihi, the Bishop Museum is the state museum of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural and natural history and holds one of the most significant collections of Hawaiian artifacts anywhere — a perfect afternoon follow-up.

The Prince Lot festival is the main event, but Hawaiʻi has hula available year-round if you know where to look.

Merrie Monarch Festival — the big competitive festival — runs the week after Easter in Hilo on the Big Island every April. It is the Super Bowl of hula and tickets are genuinely hard to get. If Merrie Monarch matters to you, plan your 2027 trip around it now; the 2026 edition is already behind us.

Weekly hula shows. Waikīkī has several free public hula shows year-round: the Kūhiō Beach Torch Lighting and Hula Show at Kūhiō Beach in Waikīkī (held multiple evenings a week at the hula mound beside the Duke Kahanamoku statue — schedule varies seasonally, check the current calendar before you head over), and the Royal Hawaiian Center free cultural programs several days a week. These are tourist-friendly, kid-friendly, and free. Not festival-caliber, but a good nightly reminder of the art.

Hālau visits. A handful of Oʻahu hālau allow respectful visitors to observe practice sessions. If you have a genuine interest in hula as a practice (not just a performance), email the Moanalua Gardens Foundation or the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts and ask — they’ll sometimes help point serious visitors toward a kumu hula open to an introduction.
