Tipping in Hawaii follows familiar U.S. customs, but a trip concentrates many service interactions into a few days: restaurant meals, hotel help, rides, tours, boat crews, and instructors. The useful approach is to budget gratuities before arrival and read every bill before adding one.

Look for “gratuity,” “service charge,” “service fee,” or “administrative fee.” Those labels are not interchangeable. If the bill does not explain whether a charge is a gratuity distributed to staff, ask. Do not add a second full tip merely because the payment screen suggests one.

Calculate a percentage tip from the service subtotal before tax unless the business or group agreement states otherwise. Hawaiʻi uses a General Excise Tax rather than a conventional retail sales tax, and businesses may visibly pass it on. For table service, 18–20% before tax is a useful budget. Adjust for the service you actually received. At bars, use a reasonable per-drink amount for a simple order or tip by percentage for a tab and more involved service.

Counter service, coffee, takeout, and food trucks do not require the same assumption as a full-service meal. A tip can recognize extra help, a complicated order, or unusually thoughtful service, but the tablet’s highest preset is not an obligation.

For delivery, consider the order, distance, weather, stairs, parking, and effort—not only the food subtotal. A delivery or platform fee may not be the driver’s gratuity; read the app’s explanation.

Tip housekeeping daily when you choose to tip because the person cleaning the room can change. A few dollars for a standard room is a practical starting point; increase it for a suite, extra work, or a special request. Leave it in a clearly marked envelope or with a note so it is not mistaken for forgotten cash.

Bell staff, valet attendants, and shuttle drivers are commonly tipped when they handle bags, retrieve the vehicle, or provide meaningful help. Scale the amount to the work. Concierge help deserves a tip when someone solves a real problem or arranges a difficult plan; handing over a map or pointing to the elevator does not create the same expectation.

Resort fees, parking charges, cleaning fees, and lodging taxes are not themselves gratuities. For a vacation rental, follow checkout instructions but do not invent extra unpaid labor beyond the agreement.

First check the operator’s confirmation. Some tours state a customary percentage, some pool tips across a crew, and some include gratuity for private or large groups. If it is not included, budget a meaningful tip for a guide, instructor, captain, or crew that delivered attentive service.

A percentage can become surprisingly large on a private charter, while a flat per-person amount can understate a demanding full day. Decide from the group size, service time, safety work, and operator guidance. If more than one person served the group, ask whether one envelope is shared.

Never let tipping pressure override a safety concern. Report unsafe conduct to the operator and document it separately.

For taxis and app-based rides, a percentage in the mid-to-high teens is a workable starting point, with more for luggage, an awkward pickup, or exceptional help. Rental-car shuttles and courtesy vans are more naturally tipped with a small flat amount when the driver handles bags.

For spa, salon, barber, and nail services, 18–20% before tax is a useful budget when gratuity is not already included. Resort spas are especially likely to have a service charge, so inspect the invoice before adding another percentage.

Cash is convenient for housekeeping, bell service, shuttles, and guides, but it is not the only respectful option. Use the method the business supports and do not assume a card tip is distributed in a particular way unless the operator says so.
