Check access before visiting. NTBG announced a temporary closure following storm damage on March 17, 2026. Its August 2, 2026 impact report describes recovery but does not give a visitor reopening date. Check directly with NTBG before travelling; this page does not confirm that the garden has reopened.

Before setting out for Kahanu Garden, confirm visitor access for your date directly with NTBG. Its published address is 650 Ulaino Road, Hāna, HI 96713. Follow the garden’s current directions and local road notices; do not attempt a flooded road crossing.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden maintains collections focused on Pacific Island plants and their uses, including plants important to Hawaiian and other Pacific cultures. Its breadfruit and canoe-plant collections show how plants support food, materials and cultural traditions.

If NTBG confirms visitor access for your date, check the available self-guided or guided option, admission, reservations and arrival time with the garden. Stay off the heiau and follow staff instructions and designated paths.

If you're spending more time in Hana, the small Hana Cultural Center on Uakea Road is a worthwhile companion stop — replica traditional hale, the restored 1871 Hana Courthouse, and a Hawaiian artifact collection that fills in more of the East Maui story.
