Choose the Region, Then Ask Who Drives
The three tours compared here make for three very different days. Aloha Adventure Farms uses the vehicle to connect cultural stops above Kona. Umauma builds a mud-and-waterfall ride into a Hāmākua day. Kohala UTV reaches private North Kohala land from Hāwī.
The vehicle label does not tell you who controls it. Aloha Adventure Farms puts eligible guests on single-rider ATVs but uses guide-driven UTVs for passengers. Umauma lets qualified guests drive either an ATV or a side-by-side. Kohala UTV has its own driver and passenger rules. Settle that distinction before comparing scenery.
Plan on a rental car
These three tours use separate rural check-in points: Aloha Adventure Farms in Holualoa, Umauma in Hakalau, and Kohala UTV in Hāwī. 1. Aloha Adventure Farms: Cultural Stops Above Kona
Aloha Adventure Farms operates in Holualoa above Kailua-Kona. Its two-hour route moves between cultural stops representing Hawaiʻi, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Book this for the stops and hands-on activities, not for a speed-focused ride. The operator requires closed-toe shoes, recommends long pants, and supplies helmets and goggles.
- Who drives: ATV riders drive single-person machines. Every UTV is driven by an Aloha Adventure Farms guide.
- Age rules: ATV drivers must be at least 16 and show valid physical ID. For the standalone ATV Tour linked here, Aloha's current page gives a minimum age of 3 for UTV passengers and requires children ages 3 and 4 to ride beside a parent or guardian. Other Aloha packages use different minimums, so match the rules to the exact product before paying.
2. Umauma: Drive, Get Muddy, and Stop at the Waterfall
The Umauma Deluxe ATV Tour runs for about 1.5 hours on a 5.5-mile private course on the Hāmākua Coast. Guests choose a 4x4 ATV or a two- or four-seat side-by-side UTV. The route includes Pacific views and a stop at a private waterfall and pond, where swimming is optional.
- Who drives: Qualified guests drive the ATVs and side-by-sides. Guide-driven ride-along passengers must be at least 12. Regular side-by-side passengers ages 4 through 11 must ride with a parent or guardian.
- Driver and rider rules: ATV drivers must be at least 16, have parental permission, and be accompanied on the tour by a parent or guardian. Umauma publishes separate side-by-side driver rules, so confirm the current minimum for that vehicle before paying. Every driver must present a valid driver's license at check-in. Passenger ages, weight limits, pregnancy restrictions, and neck/back restrictions also vary by vehicle; use the operator's current requirements for the final check.
3. Kohala UTV: Private-Land Scenery From Hāwī
Kohala UTV Adventure checks in at Hāwī for a trip the operator lists at about 2.5 hours from check-in to return. The easy-rated route crosses private North Kohala land and includes streams, waterfall views, and short walks over uneven ground.
- Who drives: Guests age 21 or older with a valid driver's license can drive. Non-driving riders must be at least 5.
- Mobility: Riders must be able to sit upright for at least an hour and walk on uneven ground. The operator requires closed-toe shoes.
- Day fit: Pair it with Pololū Valley Overlook or North Kohala, rather than crossing to Hilo after the ride. Review the current operator FAQ before booking.

What to Know Before You Go
- Bring the required ID. Aloha Adventure Farms asks ATV drivers for physical ID. Umauma and Kohala UTV require a valid driver's license from drivers.
- Wear closed-toe shoes. All three operators require them. Bring a towel and a change of clothes for Umauma or Kohala.
- Protect clean gear. Keep phones, dry clothes, and car upholstery separated from dusty or muddy riding clothes.
- Do not overstack the day. The Big Island is large. A Kohala UTV morning followed by Hilo waterfalls leaves no sensible room for a Kona dinner.
