Rainbow Falls
Big Island of Hawaii State Park
Rainbow Falls, locally known as Waiānuenue Falls, is a captivating 80-foot waterfall nestled along the lush banks of the Wailuku River in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Named for the spectacular rainbows often visible in its misty spray during sunny mornings, this waterfall is a picture-perfect stop for nature lovers, families, and photographers alike. Depending on recent rainfall, Rainbow Falls can range from a gentle, serene cascade to a mighty, roaring torrent plunging into a tranquil blue-green pool.
How to Get There
Reach Rainbow Falls via Waiānuenue Avenue and Rainbow Drive in Hilo. State Parks lists daily hours of 7 AM–5:30 PM, with gates locked at 6 PM. Check current park notices before leaving.
Wailuku River State Park charges nonresidents $5 per person aged 4 or older and $10 per noncommercial vehicle; children 3 and under are free. Hawaiʻi residents enter and park free with a valid Hawaiʻi ID or driver’s license. Payment is by credit card only. The entry and parking fees cover both Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots.

Tips for a Great Visit
- Morning light: State Parks describes rainbows in the mist on many mornings. A morning visit offers a chance to see one, but there is no guarantee; plan to enjoy the waterfall even without a rainbow.
- Check conditions: Check current park notices and follow posted signs and barriers. Stay at designated viewing areas rather than approaching the river for a photograph.
- Safety First: Stay on designated paths as rocks near the falls can be slippery. Always wear suitable footwear.
- Valuables: Rainbow Falls is popular with visitors, making it attractive to opportunistic thieves. Keep your vehicle locked and store valuables out of sight or carry them with you.
Family Activities
- Nature Trails: Easy and short trails around the waterfall are perfect for young explorers. Enjoy spotting native birds and tropical plants.
- Mythology Lessons: Spark imagination by learning about the Hawaiian goddess Hina, who, according to legend, resides behind the falls in the hidden lava cave.
- Photography: Teach kids photography basics while capturing memorable moments against the stunning waterfall backdrop.
Nearby Attractions
- Boiling Pots: Located upstream, these naturally formed terraced pools "boil" impressively during high water flows—a spectacular natural sight.
- Pe'epe'e Falls: Just beyond Boiling Pots, Pe'epe'e Falls offers additional scenic views and photo opportunities.
- Downtown Hilo: Discover local eateries, unique shops, and the vibrant Hilo Farmers Market, perfect for experiencing authentic Hawaiian culture and cuisine.
A visit to Rainbow Falls provides an unforgettable glimpse into Hawaii’s natural beauty and cultural richness, making it a highlight for travelers of all ages visiting the Big Island.
