A tide pool is not automatically a safe swimming pool. Hawaii’s rocky shelves can be calm one minute and washed by a larger set the next. Families should choose lifeguarded beach parks with protected shallows, observe marine life without handling it, and leave exposed coastal pools when surf reaches the surrounding rock.
Check a nearby station in NOAA’s live tide-prediction tool and the day’s beach hazards. A lower tide may reveal more shoreline, but surf direction, wind, and recent rain can still make a site unsafe.
