Keep the west-side stay, but protect Saturday. Choose a simple day close to your lodging. Avoid promises that require crossing the bike or run course. Base the trip on the east or southeast side. This is the cleanest choice if the race does not interest you. Hilo and Volcano support a different Big Island itinerary.
