Summer 2026 Burbank-Honolulu Flights gave Southern California travelers a brief, real Alaska-versus-Southwest comparison. Alaska’s seasonal Burbank-to-Honolulu service ran from May 13 through August 18. Southwest began peak-day Burbank-Honolulu service on August 4, creating an overlap from August 4 through August 18.

Delta expanded its Hawaiʻi schedule in 2026, but it did not add a California-to-Hawaiʻi route to this matchup. Its 2026 Hawaiʻi schedule announcement matters for a wider flight search, not this Burbank contest.

The useful comparison is Alaska versus Southwest at Burbank, then Southwest’s daily Ontario service against an existing Alaska-Hawaiian nonstop option.

Burbank was the summer’s cleanest head-to-head route. Alaska Airlines launched daily seasonal BUR-HNL service on May 13; Alaska’s official announcement listed flights through August 18. Southwest began peak-day BUR-HNL flights on August 4. “Peak-day” does not mean Southwest flew every calendar day.

For travelers near Burbank, BUR can beat LAX simply because the airport is closer. Still, drive time, parking, schedule, and the total fare can erase that advantage fast. Use the airport’s traffic statistics only as background, not as a reason to choose a flight.

I would not promise that overlapping flights automatically cut fares. Airline pricing moves like a tide pool: seats disappear, demand shifts, and the waterline changes. The overlap gave travelers two airlines to compare for the same airport pair. That was the value.

Ontario offered the longer-running new comparison. Southwest began daily ONT-HNL service on June 4, while its BUR-HNL route was described as peak-day service. Ontario was not a new Honolulu nonstop market: Alaska-Hawaiian’s May network listing identified ONT-HNL as year-round, once-daily service. Southwest added another carrier to an existing nonstop route.

Price ONT, BUR, and LAX as complete trips, not as headline fares. A cheaper ticket can lose its edge after parking or a punishing cross-county drive. Hawaiʻi fares are live inventory. There is no fixed “expected” Southwest price.

Southwest’s fare rules changed in 2026. On many mainland itineraries booked, ticketed, or changed on or after April 9, Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares carry a $45 first checked-bag fee and a $55 second-bag fee. Basic fares can be changed only with a fare upgrade. Cancel a Basic fare at least 10 minutes before original departure, and you may qualify for a flight credit under Southwest’s terms. Check the airline’s travel-fee page and fare-type terms before booking.

Southwest’s announcement did not promise year-round BUR-HNL flying or call the route a demand test. Treat future schedules as unconfirmed until the airline loads flights for sale.

Alaska Air Group completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines on September 18, 2024. Its acquisition announcement framed the deal around expanded route and loyalty options. Route scale still does not predict the best fare for one traveler.

Integration is still moving. Hawaiian transitioned to the same Sabre passenger-service system used by Alaska Airlines. Alaska says the shared system supports smoother booking and travel in its system-migration announcement. Check the operating carrier and ticket conditions for each itinerary.

Hawaiian Airlines joined oneworld on April 23, 2026. oneworld’s announcement says members can earn and redeem points across member airlines. Your result still depends on your loyalty program and the fare or award you book. Earlier coverage of Hawaiian’s oneworld plans gives useful context, but it does not override your program’s rules.

Track airport pairs you can actually use. For this summer’s new flights, that meant BUR-HNL and ONT-HNL. Google Flights price tracking can monitor a route or specific flight and email you when tracked prices change significantly. Set separate alerts. Southern California is not one airport market.

Shift your dates before locking in a fare. Test a day earlier and a day later, then compare the same cabin and fare type. The calendar is a lever, not a rule.

Ignore generic booking-window formulas. No reliable six-to-eight-week switch suddenly makes airlines compete. If your dates are fixed, start tracking early and book when the price fits your budget. If your plans are flexible, keep watching.

Baggage can flip the result. Alaska lists $45 for a first checked bag and $55 for a second on standard North American tickets issued on or after April 10, 2026. Southwest lists the same standard fees on several fare types. Two travelers checking two bags each would pay $400 round-trip without an exemption. Review Alaska’s published baggage update and Southwest’s rules before comparing totals. If Delta enters your wider search, review its separate fee schedule too.

Compare flight timing with your first hotel night. A late arrival can mean paying for a room you barely use. An early arrival can leave you parked in a lobby until check-in. Price the whole chain before calling one flight cheaper.

Statewide seat-capacity reports are context, not a BUR-HNL fare forecast. Hawaiʻi DBEDT’s visitor research describes the broader market, but it cannot tell you whether your Burbank or Ontario flight will get cheaper.

By September, the temporary Alaska-Southwest pairing at BUR was over. Alaska’s scheduled seasonal service concluded August 18. Southwest’s BUR-HNL route page shows the route for sale after its August 4 launch, but the booking calendar, not a summer press release, decides which dates you can buy.

ONT-HNL is the cleaner airport pair to keep checking. Southwest entered an existing nonstop market there, so compare current schedules, fare types, bags, parking, and drive time before choosing ONT over BUR or LAX.

Neither carrier’s summer announcement tells us whether Alaska will return to BUR in 2027 or how Southwest will schedule the route. Do not turn a two-week overlap into a forecast.
