A Hawaii interisland flight is short in the air and expensive in vacation time. Checkout, rental-car return, agriculture or baggage procedures, security, boarding, baggage claim, the next rental counter, and hotel check-in turn one flight into a transfer block.

Add an island only when its reason is worth that block. Then choose the live itinerary by airport, total price, baggage, recovery options, and the ground handoff—not by the lowest fare tile.

From October 3, 2026, Hawaiian and Alaska Neighbor Island passengers must complete check-in and checked-bag drop at least 50 minutes before departure, up from 30 minutes, according to the airlines’ September 18 announcement. This applies across their Neighbor Island flights, not just the new Honolulu–Kahului 737 service. Other airlines have their own deadlines.

Treat 50 minutes as the deadline for completing those steps. Work backward from it for rental-car return, any shuttle ride, and the bag-drop line; leave time for security and boarding too. For a noon departure, the new cutoff is 11:10 a.m. Arriving at the airport at 11:10 would leave no margin to complete check-in or bag drop.

Honolulu Neighbor Island passengers on Hawaiian 717s and Alaska 737s continue using Terminal 1, Lobby 3. In Kahului, passengers on a 737 to Honolulu use Alaska’s counters beside Hawaiian’s. Check the aircraft type and airport instructions in your booking before choosing a drop-off point. The same airline notice moves Hawaiian’s Honolulu international check-in and bag drop to Terminal 2, Lobby 4 on October 3; that is a separate change from Neighbor Island check-in.

Our Hawaii flight changes guide covers the new route and schedule announcements. Use this page to plan the transfer on the ground.

The main visitor network centers on Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG), Līhuʻe (LIH), Kona (KOA), and Hilo (ITO). Smaller Mokulele airports can support Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Hāna, Kapalua, and Waimea-area plans when the live route fits.

Pick the airport that serves the actual itinerary. Kona and Hilo are not interchangeable endings for Hawaiʻi Island. Kahului and Kapalua create different Maui rental and lodging handoffs. Open our Hawaii Airports guide before comparing flight times.

Hawaiian and Alaska: the combined network retains Hawaiian-branded interisland service. Use the current airport guides and live booking result for schedule, terminal, fare, and baggage terms.

Southwest: its current interisland page lists service among the five main airports and explains Hawaiʻi-resident rewards and bag benefits. Do not apply a resident promotion to a visitor booking.

Mokulele: the current route map and booking system cover smaller communities as well as selected main-airport links. Its Cessna Grand Caravan operation, check-in process, baggage limits, and airport facilities differ from a mainline jet trip; read the confirmation.

Mokulele's Kona–Kahului route page lists twice-daily nonstop service between Kona (KOA) and Kahului (OGG) starting October 1, 2026. If your trip pairs Maui with west Hawaiʻi Island, include this direct option in your comparison. The airline marks its limited-time launch promotion as ended; compare the current booking total instead of relying on an old offer.

Match the flight to both ground itineraries with our Kona airport guide and Kahului airport guide. Before paying, check your actual travel dates, available seats, check-in location and deadline, baggage allowances, and connection terms. The Hawaiian/Alaska 50-minute cutoff above is not a Mokulele rule. Keep the rental-car handoff and missed-connection consequences in the comparison, even when a nonstop looks convenient.

Compare the checkout total after bags, seats, and any fare-family choice. Then add both ground sides: hotel checkout timing, fuel, rental return, airport transport, next-island rental pickup, parking, and an early or late lodging gap.

Baggage policies can change and may differ by airline, route, status, residence, fare, and equipment. Open the rule during checkout. Photograph the bag receipt and keep medication, keys, identification, and one essential change of clothing in the allowed carry-on.

Check the ticket seller’s disruption and missed-connection terms before paying. Confirm whether the flights are issued on one ticket, who handles rebooking, and whether bags can be checked through. If you self-connect, leave enough margin to collect bags, transfer terminals if necessary, recheck, and clear security under the second carrier’s cutoff.

Do not put the final interisland flight immediately before an irreplaceable mainland or international departure unless the itinerary and protection are strong enough for the consequence. When the final departure matters most, spending the last night on that island is often the calmer design.

Use the Hawaii Airport Arrival Planner for the first landing, then repeat the same questions for the island hop: terminal, bags, transport, food, accessibility, and the first realistic stop. The second arrival is still an arrival day.

Make separate reservations for the correct airport and island, then confirm late-arrival and shuttle procedures. Save the return fuel and after-hours rules. An attractive flight can become a poor transfer if the rental counter is closed or the vehicle class is unavailable.

If you need to compare the major agencies, Hawaii Guide may earn a commission when you book through Discount Hawaii Car Rental. Match each reservation to the airport code on the ticket.

Keep the departure morning simple, use the airline’s current check-in cutoff, and avoid a fixed tour or long restaurant reservation immediately after arrival. Put one easy meal, grocery stop, or nearby beach in the plan and let the next full day carry the island’s main experience.

Our verdict: choose fewer islands with clear reasons rather than more islands because the flight looks short. The right interisland ticket protects both the transfer and the days on either side.
