County beach parks are the workhorses: places like Kailua Beach Park on Oahu, Kamaole Beach Park on Maui, Lydgate Beach Park on Kauai, and many neighborhood parks on the Big Island. These are often the best visitor choice when you need bathrooms, showers, parking, and a place to sit under shade. County pages are the first place to confirm amenities. When a Hawaii beach page lists restrooms, expect public park restrooms. They are practical, not polished. Some are clean and well maintained; others are heavily used, sandy, and occasionally closed. Bring tissues or wipes in the car if you are traveling with kids or anyone who cannot easily wait for the next stop.

When a beach lists showers, expect outdoor rinse showers. They are usually cold, exposed, and designed to get salt and sand off before you get back into the rental car. They are not a substitute for a hotel shower, and they rarely include private changing rooms. A beach towel, dry clothes, and a wet bag still matter.

The phrase "comfort station" usually means a restroom building. "Pavilion" means a covered picnic structure. "Day-use area" can mean picnic tables and parking, but it does not guarantee lifeguards or showers. "Beach access" may mean only a shoreline path, especially in resort areas. • Oahu: Ala Moana Beach Park, Kailua Beach Park, and Waimanalo Beach Park each list comfort stations, showers, picnic sites, and lifeguard services on the Honolulu Parks site. Waikiki also has public restrooms and rinse showers along its shoreline, including at Kuhio Beach, Queen's Beach, and within Kapiolani Park.
• Maui: Kamaole I, II, and III, Baldwin Beach Park, and D.T. Fleming Beach Park are all listed by Maui County Parks with restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards.

Beaches with few or no facilities can be wonderful. They are often quieter, prettier, and less built up. They also ask more of you. Lanikai on Oahu sits in a residential neighborhood with beach access paths but no public restrooms, showers, or dedicated parking lots. Makalawena, inside Kekaha Kai State Park on the Big Island, requires a hike over lava rock and has no facilities or drinking water at the beach itself. Many Road to Hana or lava-coast pullouts are similar: the beach experience is stronger because the infrastructure is lighter.

Polihale on Kauai is a step up from those, but only barely. The official DLNR page lists pavilions with cold showers and restrooms, but the access road is a five-mile unpaved stretch where high-clearance and four-wheel drive are recommended, there are no lifeguards, and strong seasonal currents are common. Pack as if nothing is guaranteed to be working when you arrive.

For these beaches, plan the bathroom stop before you park. Bring more water than you think you need. Pack out all trash. Carry a dry bag or wet bag for sandy clothes. Keep footwear in the car for hot pavement, lava rock, kiawe thorns, and long walks back to parking. Do not count on cell service, shade, or a nearby store.

Do not use "no facilities" as a dare. If you are traveling with toddlers, older relatives, medical needs, or anyone who needs predictable bathroom access, pick a beach park with infrastructure and save the remote beach for a short look rather than an all-day setup.

Many visitors build a day like this: beach in the morning, dinner reservation at 5:30, no hotel stop in between. That only works if you treat the rinse shower as a salt-removal tool and bring the rest of the cleanup plan yourself.

Pack a full-size towel for each person, a change of clothes, a plastic bag or wet bag for swimsuits, and a simple car-seat towel or seat cover if you are driving a rental. • Rinse shower: Is there a shower, or are you driving back salty and sandy?

• Parking: Is there an actual lot, street parking, paid parking, or a residential access situation?
• Jurisdiction: Is it a county beach park, state park, resort-front public access point, or unmanaged shoreline access?
• Shade: Are there trees or pavilions, or do you need an umbrella or pop-up shade?
• Food and water: Is there anything nearby, or do you need to bring everything?
• Exit plan: Where do you change, rinse, dispose of trash, and clean up before the next stop?

The prettiest beach is not always the best beach for the day you are actually planning. If you need a long family beach day, choose a park with restrooms, rinse showers, lifeguards, parking, and shade. If you want the quieter no-facility beach, treat it like a self-contained outing and leave before anyone is uncomfortable.
