People email me about Hawaii bugs more than almost any other "is it safe" question, usually some version of: what's going to bite me, and should I be worried? The short answer is reassuring. Hawaii is one of the mildest tropical destinations on earth for creepy-crawlies. There are no snakes. Nothing here is hunting you. Nothing you'll meet on a normal trip will put a healthy adult in the hospital.

The longer answer is worth a few minutes, because the difference between a great trip and a miserable night usually comes down to a couple of small habits. A mosquito-heavy rainforest hike, a centipede in a damp ground-floor rental, a fire-ant sting on a beach lawn — all avoidable once you know what you're dealing with. Here's the honest rundown, sorted by what you're actually likely to encounter.

Hawaii is the most isolated archipelago on Earth, almost 2,400 miles from the nearest continent, according to the University of Hawaii's School of Ocean and Earth Science. No snakes. Hawaii has no established land snakes, and it is illegal to own one. No native mosquitoes. This one surprises people. Centipedes are nocturnal and like damp, dark spots. The realistic exposure for visitors is a ground-floor or garden-level rental, especially after rain, when one wanders inside. Two habits cover almost all of it: shake out your shoes before putting them on, and don't leave damp towels or clothes in a pile on the floor. You will probably see a cane spider, and it will probably make someone in your group yelp. It's a large, flat, fast brown spider — the huntsman, Heteropoda venatoria — that shows up on walls and ceilings. It looks alarming and it moves fast. It is also essentially harmless. University of Florida entomologists describe it as neither dangerous to humans nor a web-builder, and it spends its night hunting cockroaches, which makes it a roommate worth tolerating.

Hawaii does have a couple of spiders that can deliver a real bite, mainly the introduced southern black widow and brown widow, but encounters are uncommon and they keep to undisturbed spots like the underside of patio furniture or woodpiles. Then the two free habits that do the heavy lifting: shake out your shoes before putting them on, and don't leave damp clothes piled on the floor of a ground-level room. That's the whole defense against centipedes. For mosquitoes, keep screens closed, run the AC or a fan (moving air keeps them off you), and spray before wet-side outings.
