If one person in your group wants to stay dry and still see what is under the boat, the decision is simple: book a tour that names a glass-bottom vessel and describes its viewing panels. A seat on a snorkel catamaran is not proof of underwater windows. A deck-only ride-along gives you coastline and surface views; check separately for a way to see below the water.

Hawaii does have dedicated glass-bottom tours. Two are described in detail by their operators: one in Waikiki on Oahu and one in Kona on Hawaii Island. We recommend checking those first. Deck-only cruises on Maui and Kauai can still be a good fit for a non-swimmer, as long as everyone understands what the view will actually be.

Waikiki, Oahu. Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats runs a one-hour Waikiki Glass Bottom Boat Cruise aboard the Haleiwa Queen. The operator describes leaving its slip in Kewalo Basin Harbor and heading toward Lē‘ahi (Diamond Head), with reef and ocean-floor viewing through deck viewports. The tour is listed for all ages and advertised from $40 (operator tour page). Treat wildlife sightings and a clear view of the reef as possibilities, not guarantees.

The same operator’s tour list also shows a Ko Olina daytime glass-bottom tour, one hour, all ages, from $99 (operator tour list). Both “from” figures are advertised starting prices, not full checkout quotes, and the two tours are separate products. Do not assume the Ko Olina tour shares the Kewalo Basin departure or the same ticket.

Kona, Hawaii Island. Kona Glass Bottom Boat offers a glass-bottom reef tour of about 50 minutes, usually departing from Kailua Pier. Its quoted prices are $60 per adult (12 and up), $30 for ages 3–11, and $5 for children under 3 (operator tour page). Confirm the current departure point and total cost when you book, because “usual” departure and quoted fares can change.

For comparison shopping, start with the island listings on Viator for Oahu cruises and water tours and Big Island cruises and water tours, then read the operator’s own specification page before you pay. The operator page is where you confirm the vessel name and the viewing feature.

If the goal is a dry underwater view and the budget allows it, a submarine is the clearest alternative on Oahu. Atlantis describes its Waikiki tour aboard Atlantis XIV as a dive to 100 feet in an air-conditioned submarine, passing artificial reefs such as sunken ships and an airplane hull. The posted all-inclusive rates are $167.81 per adult and $75.39 per child (Atlantis Waikiki page). Check passenger height and ladder requirements with Atlantis before booking; staying dry does not establish that a tour is suitable for every child or traveler with limited mobility.

At these advertised rates, the Waikīkī submarine costs more than the surface cruise, but the viewing is different: you are below the surface rather than looking down through the hull. Our Oahu submarine tours page and our Hawaii submarine tours guide cover the details for choosing between the two.

We are not listing a confirmed dedicated glass-bottom tour on Maui or Kauai in this article. That does not mean none exists, but it does mean you should not assume one from a general cruise listing. If you book a catamaran there, plan for a surface view unless the operator names an underwater viewing feature in writing.

On Maui, the Pride of Maui is a 65-foot maxi-power catamaran with a shaded indoor cabin, lounge seating, two decks and restrooms (fleet page). For a passenger who wants to remain aboard, ask about ride-along policies and boarding needs. The fleet page does not describe underwater windows; confirm the exact viewing feature before choosing it for a dry reef view.

Use the same feature check for Kona snorkel alternatives. Body Glove’s 4.5-hour snorkel and dolphin watch aboard Kanoa II lists shade, restrooms, freshwater showers, a water slide, and snorkel gear (Body Glove page). The current page does not promise a glass-bottom or underwater cabin; if that matters to you, confirm directly with the operator before booking. It is a longer snorkel outing, not a substitute for a 50-minute reef view.

Sea Paradise describes the Hoku Nui, a 50-foot sailing catamaran running snorkel and manta tours. Its FAQ says guests entering the water must be confident swimmers, while non-swimmers may stay on deck on daytime snorkel tours at the regular tour rate. The FAQ also welcomes manta-tour Ride-Along observers. The homepage advertises those manta Ride-Along tickets at $65 and uses “manta tours only” wording for them. Read that discounted ticket separately from the FAQ’s daytime deck option, and confirm participation and the full fare for your selected departure directly with the operator. Neither cited page describes a glass-bottom viewing feature. Staying on deck is not a promise of an underwater reef view.

A tour advertised for all ages still needs a closer look for a stroller, wheelchair, or passenger who cannot manage steps. Before paying, ask the operator:

• Which vessel will run? Get the boat name and a description of its viewing panels. Confirm that the feature is on your sailing, rather than another boat in the fleet.
• How do we board and reach the view? Ask about dock gaps, steps, standing or seated viewing, shared panels, handrails and restroom access. Describe the passenger’s actual needs; ask for a photograph of the boarding route when useful.
• What is the full schedule? Confirm check-in, departure pier, tour length and return time. For a cruise-ship stop, leave a return buffer rather than treating the ride duration as the whole outing.
• What will everyone pay? Check adult, child and infant tickets, taxes, fees and cancellation terms for the actual product and date. A starting price on a category page is not a final quote.
• What happens if conditions change? Ask about weather cancellation and poor visibility. Do not count on an operator changing the route, rescheduling or refunding unless its terms say so.

Boat motion still matters when you stay dry. If seasickness or medication is a concern, ask a clinician or pharmacist ahead of the trip rather than using a blanket dose or timing rule from a travel article.

Bring sun protection and follow the operator’s footwear, food and bag rules. Hawaiʻi’s state sunscreen law restricts sale and distribution for sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. That sales rule is not a universal product-use approval; check local requirements and the operator’s policy too. A “reef-safe” label alone is not the test. For photographs, ask where reflections are least intrusive and keep equipment out of other passengers’ sightlines. There is no need to buy a particular camera for this outing. Spend your preparation time confirming the view and the boarding route.
