Receiving a lei should feel welcoming. Thank the giver, follow their lead, and wear a neck lei gently over your shoulders if you can. If flowers bother you, explain that kindly. We recommend asking to put the lei on yourself if you prefer to avoid physical contact.

Our advice is to make three decisions separately: how to receive the gift, how to look after it, and whether to take it home. A fresh lei can often travel to the U.S. mainland after USDA inspection, but every flower, leaf, and other component matters. Kukui nut lei can contain prohibited greenery too.

Lei mark occasions such as birthdays, graduations, weddings, and welcomes. They can also be given simply to show affection. Honolulu lei maker Cindy’s Lei Shoppe explains its etiquette: accept graciously, drape a neck lei over the shoulders with part hanging in front and part behind, and avoid casually removing it in front of the giver.

A smile and a sincere thank-you are a good starting point. Let the giver show you how their lei is intended to be worn. If you need to remove it because of an allergy or sensitivity, say so; Cindy’s explicitly makes room for that situation. You can appreciate the gift without treating discomfort as a test of respect.

If you are buying a gift, tell the lei maker who it is for, the occasion, and whether fragrance is a concern. Ask for the current price of that specific design.

For a pregnant recipient, ask about an open-ended lei and the recipient’s preference. Cindy’s etiquette guide describes the customary avoidance of a closed neck lei during pregnancy and offers open lei or a head lei as alternatives.

Lei poʻo means a lei worn on the head; haku describes a making technique. They are not interchangeable terms. The Kamehameha Schools Cultural Vibrancy Group explains that haku uses a three-strand braid incorporating floral materials. Its guide also describes twisting, knotting, winding, sewing, and stringing methods. Kamehameha Schools describes lei made with flowers, foliage, nuts, seeds, shells, and feathers. Ask the maker which materials suit the technique you want to learn.

For a class or demonstration, let the practitioner explain the materials and method being used. That conversation is more useful than assuming every flower crown is made the same way.

Tell the seller when you plan to wear the lei and how you will store it. Follow instructions for the actual flowers you bought instead of assuming every lei needs the same treatment.

Cindy’s care guide advises gentle unpacking and protection from crushing, heat, and extreme cold. Ask the maker how to apply that advice to your flowers and hotel storage. We would skip a promise that a lei will last a fixed number of days in a warm room or rental car.

If the lei is for a celebration during your trip, add the pickup and event to your My Trip plan so you can keep those errands together. Buy for the occasion first; decide about bringing it home after you know what it contains.

Cindy’s describes returning lei materials to the earth as a tradition, while its history and etiquette page also cautions against throwing a whole lei into the ocean or onto the land. Cindy’s recommends separating the flowers from their string and disposing of each part appropriately. We recommend checking for ribbon or other fittings as you take the lei apart.

Our practical recommendation for visitors: ask the lei maker or your accommodation how to handle the wilted flowers locally. If a property offers an approved place for composting or returning flowers, use it with permission. Do not assume a hotel planter, park, beach, or public tree is available for that purpose. Pack out the lei and use an appropriate disposal option when none is offered. Avoid leaving it on a statue after your trip unless the site’s caretakers specifically invite that practice.

Fresh lei are not categorically banned from the U.S. mainland. USDA’s Hawaiʻi traveler guidance lists eligible fresh flowers, lei, and foliage as allowed after passing inspection. Present your lei and other agricultural items to USDA before leaving Hawaiʻi. A seller’s reassurance does not replace that inspection.

Before buying one to carry home, ask the maker to identify all of its components. USDA’s Know the Lei of the Land fact sheet says lei cannot enter the mainland with citrus or citrus-related flowers, leaves, or other plant parts, including mock orange, or with jade vine or Mauna Loa. It also tells buyers to check for fresh botanical fruits such as berries and pandanus fruit.

Do not treat a kukui nut or seed lei as automatically cleared. USDA warns that some kukui nut lei include citrus-related leaves, and its traveler list places seed lei and seed jewelry among items allowed after inspection. Check the complete item, including decorative greenery.

For an international flight, check your destination’s official plant-import and declaration requirements before buying a lei to bring home. If you are unsure, ask USDA or your destination’s biosecurity agency about your lei before packing.

Thank the giver and follow their lead. Ask about the right form and care for the person receiving it. Make a respectful disposal plan rather than leaving the lei in a public place. If you want to take it home, identify every component and get the required inspection or destination guidance first.
