Most visitors are surprised to learn Hawaii wineries exist at all. There are two. MauiWine sits on Ulupalakua Ranch at the end of Maui’s Piʻilani Highway, in cattle country at the southern edge of Haleakalā. Volcano Winery sits a short drive from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, surrounded by rainforest on the Big Island’s volcanic slope. Both pour real grape wine, alongside the pineapple and fruit blends people expect.

Neither is on the way to anything else. That is the trick to visiting them. You go because the drive is worth it for its own sake, and because the tasting rooms tell you something about Hawaii that no luau or beach bar can. Here is how to plan a stop at either, what the rooms actually feel like, and how each fits into a real itinerary.

MauiWine sits on Ulupalakua Ranch, a working cattle operation on Haleakalā’s southern flank that stretches from upcountry pasture down to the dry coast at La Pérouse. The drive there is half the point. You climb out of Kīhei or Kahului through Kula’s flower farms, past Grandma’s Coffee House in Keokea, then continue six miles along a two-lane road where the ocean opens up on your right and the slopes of Haleakalā rise to your left. MauiWine’s own site warns that GPS can mislead some visitors and tells you to stay on Highway 37 the whole way.

The tasting room is in the King’s Cottage, a small wooden cottage on the property historically associated with King Kalākaua. Inside it is small, paneled in old wood, with a counter and a handful of tasting positions. The vibe is closer to a ranch outbuilding than a Napa estate, which is exactly the appeal. There is a separate Tasting Room and Old Jail building on the same grounds where the staff can pour through a flight without rushing you.

The lineup splits into three families. Pineapple wines are made with Maui Gold pineapple, which MauiWine’s own wines page credits as the source for Maui Blanc and Maui Splash. Estate grape wines come from the Ulupalakua Vineyards collection (the syrah, malbec, and chenin blanc grown on the property), and a smaller Rose Ranch Collection rounds it out. The pineapple sparkling is the one most visitors remember. It is bright, dry, and unmistakably tropical. The grape wines surprise people who expect “Hawaiian wine” to be a novelty.

Visiting MauiWine:

• Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm (closed Mondays — note this before you build a Monday Upcountry day). Per their site.

• Phone: (808) 878-6058. Reservations are not required for the standard tasting room.
• What to pair it with: The Ulupalakua Ranch Store sits directly across the road at 14779 Piʻilani Highway and grills its own ranch-raised burgers from a window (grill last call 3:30pm; store and grill are both closed Mondays, same as MauiWine). Order before your tasting, eat on the picnic tables under the trees afterward. The drive home through Kula at sunset is one of the best on Maui.
• How long it takes: Plan 60 to 90 minutes on the grounds, plus the better part of a half day for the round-trip drive from West or South Maui.

Several operators run small-group day trips that bundle MauiWine with a lavender farm or a country distillery so the half day works as one booking. Volcano Winery sits on Piʻi Mauna Drive, a short turn off Highway 11 just before the entrance to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Most visitors discover it by accident on the way in or out of the park, which is exactly how it should be visited. The setting is the opposite of Ulupalakua’s open ranch land. The winery is tucked into ʻōhiʻa rainforest at high elevation on Mauna Loa’s southern slope, which is cool and often misty even in August.

The wines are the unusual part. Volcano Winery makes traditional grape wines, Pinot Noir among them, alongside fruit blends and honey meads using Hawaiʻi-grown ingredients. The pours that catch people off guard are the tea wines, made from estate-grown Hawaiian tea. The winery’s wines page describes their Infusion tea wine as being fermented with their own estate-grown black teas, which is unusual enough on its own. The same page calls out the Infusion, the Ānuenue, and the Meli dessert wine as headline pours.

The tasting room is small and walk-in only. No reservations. Expect to share the counter with park-bound visitors and Volcano Village locals.

Visiting Volcano Winery:

• Hours: Tastings daily, noon to 5:30pm, with the last tasting starting at 5pm. The winery itself is open 364 days a year (closed Christmas Day) per their contact page.

• Phone: (808) 967-7772. No reservations, walk-ins only.
• Tasting fees (per their site at time of writing): the Classic Wine Tasting runs $20 for six one-ounce pours; the Aliʻi Vineyard Tour is $40 per person; the Kīlauea Ki Tea Presentation is $60; the Wine Maker's Tour is $75. Tour pricing puts Volcano Winery in true Napa-style "guided experience" territory if you want to go deep.
• What to pair it with: the entrance to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is two minutes further down Highway 11. A morning at the park followed by a late-afternoon tasting is the classic move; reverse it if you want sunset at Kīlauea Overlook afterward.
• How long it takes: 45 to 60 minutes for the standard tasting. Budget two hours for the vineyard or tea tour.

Since the winery sits in the park’s neighborhood, most Big Island visitors are already driving from Kona or Hilo for park access. It is the kind of stop you fit in if you have your own car.

The wineries split the visitor experience neatly down the middle. You can use that to decide which one (or both) to fit in.

• Setting: MauiWine is upcountry ranch: open pasture, big sky, ocean views down to Kahoʻolawe and Lānaʻi. Volcano Winery is high-elevation rainforest: ferns, ʻōhiʻa, often cool and overcast. The two atmospheres are about as different as Hawaii gets.
• Vibe of the room: MauiWine's tasting room in the King's Cottage feels like a historic ranch outbuilding. Volcano Winery feels like a working farm tasting room near a national park entrance.
• Reservations: MauiWine takes the standard tasting walk-in (and offers a more in-depth tour by appointment). Volcano Winery is strictly walk-in.
• Cost: Volcano Winery posts its tasting prices publicly ($20 classic, up to $75 for the full winemaker's tour). MauiWine's pricing is less prominent on the public-facing site. Confirm at the door, especially if you want a guided tour rather than the standard pour.
• Closed days to watch: MauiWine is closed Mondays. Volcano Winery is open every day except Christmas. If you only have a Monday for upcountry Maui, plan around the closure.
• Pair-with potential: MauiWine pairs naturally with a half day in Upcountry Maui: Kula Botanical Garden, the Ulupalakua Ranch Store burger, sunset on the drive home. Volcano Winery pairs with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the entrance two minutes further along Highway 11.

Travelers visiting both islands on one trip occasionally try to “collect” both wineries, which is fun but optional. The rooms are similar enough that one is almost always plenty unless wine is a real focus of the trip.

Hawaii wine is a slightly tricky souvenir. Bottles are heavy in checked luggage and break easily on a connecting flight. Both wineries ship within the U.S. (and via club memberships) for the bottles you really want to keep, almost always the better option than packing a flight of pineapple sparkling between your shoes.

A few small picks worth packing if you are determined to fly something home:

• Single bottles you cannot find on the mainland. MauiWine's pineapple sparkling is the obvious one, and Volcano Winery's tea wines are essentially unobtainable elsewhere.
• Honey mead. Volcano Winery's Meli reads as a dessert pour and works well as a gift for honey-mead-curious friends back home.
• Be cautious with souvenir-store "Hawaiian" fruit wines sold in ABC Stores and resort shops. In my experience, these rarely have any connection to either winery's actual production. If you want what MauiWine or Volcano Winery makes, buy it from them directly.

A simple inflatable wine sleeve from Amazon is the cheapest insurance against a broken bottle in your checked bag. Two of them in your suitcase let you bring back two carefully chosen bottles from a Hawaii trip without packing the rest of your wardrobe around them.

Neither winery is on the natural path of a typical Hawaii trip. The drives are meaningful: an hour each way to Ulupalakua from most Maui resorts, an hour-plus to Volcano from Kona. If your time on either island is tight, the right call is often to skip the winery and pour your hours into the thing the island does uniquely well.

A few times when a winery does not belong in the itinerary:

• If you only have a Maui day for Haleakalā. The summit sunrise plus the descent through Kula already eats the day. Adding MauiWine compresses both experiences.
• If your Big Island trip is West-side only. A round trip from Kona for a $20 tasting is a hard sell. Save Volcano Winery for a trip that includes Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park anyway.
• If you are not a wine person. The atmosphere at both is genuinely nice, but the rooms are small and the visit is mostly about the pour. The coffee farm tour circuit on the Big Island and Maui's tiki bar scene are stronger drink-tourism plays for non-wine drinkers.

When the visit fits, it fits beautifully. A misty afternoon at Volcano Winery with a flight of tea wines and a notebook is one of the more unusual hours on the islands. The drive home from MauiWine at golden hour, with Haleakalā glowing on one side and the ocean on the other, is one of those Hawaii moments that stays with you a long time after the trip ends.
