Fall 2026 gives music-minded Hawaiʻi travelers three useful slack-key dates. Kona is October 18. Kauaʻi is November 8. Kahilu Theatre’s published concert schedule in Waimea runs November 13–14. The dates are confirmed, but the visitor details are uneven. That difference should decide what you book now.

Slack key, or kī hōʻalu, is Hawaiian guitar music built on strings loosened into open chords. A skilled player can carry a steady bass line with the thumb while the fingers pull melody overhead, like two musicians working from the same chair.

If live Hawaiian music is important enough to shape a trip, choose the event with the clearest current schedule and build the rest of the stay around it. If you simply want to hear Hawaiian music once and are staying on Maui or Oʻahu, use a dependable weekly performance below. On Kauaʻi or Hawaiʻi Island, plan around the listed festivals or check local venue calendars during your travel week. Do not assume every luau, hotel lobby, or sunset bar offers the same experience.

Here is what is confirmed as of August 22, what needs another calendar check, and which option fits each kind of trip.

Kona: October 18. The organizer’s current event listing places the 29th Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival, Kona Style, at OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa from 1 to 5 p.m. Milton Lau produces the event through the Ki-Hoʻalu Foundation.

Kauaʻi: November 8. The Ki-Hoʻalu Foundation’s current producer calendar on FestivalNet lists the 34th Kauaʻi edition at OUTRIGGER Kauai Beach Resort & Spa. A separate Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority event record confirms the date, but the foundation’s own festival site is not reliably loading. Treat the venue as provisional and verify it directly before paying around the event.

Waimea, Hawaiʻi Island: ticketed program November 13–14. This is separate from the Kona and Kauaʻi series. Kahilu Theatre has posted a full program for its 24th Annual ʻUkulele & Slack Key Guitar Festival. The pass page is indexed under November 12, but the schedule on that page begins Friday, November 13, with a 7 p.m. Hoʻolauleʻa concert. Saturday, November 14, has workshops, a 2 p.m. kanikapila, and a 7 p.m. Hana Hou concert. The posted roster includes Ledward Kaapana, Jeff Peterson, Sonny Lim, Brittni Paiva, Jerry Santos, Kamuela Kimokeo, and Taimane.

These are different travel decisions, not interchangeable entries on one festival calendar.

Keep Kauaʻi on a watchlist if November 8 already falls inside your trip. The date is solid enough to save. The venue is not solid enough to choose a resort or switch islands around it. Pick Waimea if focused listening is the reason for the trip. Kahilu has the most complete published program, with concerts, workshops, named artists, and a two-day pass. It gives serious listeners a chance to hear the music in different settings instead of one continuous afternoon. Stay in Waimea or on the Kohala side. Treating the theater as a casual late-night drive from Kailua-Kona is a bad plan.

My call: casual listeners should use Kona or a weekly show already on their island. Travelers happy to spend most of a weekend listening should choose Kahilu. Kauaʻi becomes the stronger choice once the organizer reconfirms the venue on its own festival site.

Maui has the best fallback when your dates miss every festival. The Slack Key Show — Masters of Hawaiian Music runs every Wednesday at Napili Kai Beach Resort. The current schedule lists doors at 5:45 p.m. and the show from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Guest artists rotate, and the program includes storytelling and hula.

This is a listening-room decision, not background music over dinner. The audience comes for the performers. The guest changes from week to week, and the room is small enough for the introductions to matter. If your Maui trip includes a Wednesday, check the named guest on the official site and book before assuming there will be room at the door.

If you are staying in South Maui or near Hāna, account for the drive before buying. A West Maui Wednesday fits naturally. A cross-island night can turn a focused concert into a long return after dark.

Oʻahu is the easiest island for hearing Hawaiian music without making it the trip’s main event.

The Royal Hawaiian Band was founded by King Kamehameha III in 1836 and is now part of the City and County of Honolulu. The palace’s current concert calendar lists free performances on most Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. Check the specific date before walking over, since city functions and special events can alter an individual week. In Waikīkī, Waikīkī Beach Walk’s current activity page lists the free Kū Haʻaheo Hawaiian music and hula performance on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. It also posts a monthly Mele Haliʻa showcase. Daily introductory ʻukulele lessons are listed separately. These are easy walk-up choices, but the venue says dates and performances can change. Verify the week of your visit.

For a seated sunset version, House Without a Key at Halekulani currently lists Hawaiian music nightly from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with hula during the evening. The lawn cocktail area is first come, first served. Dinner reservations are separate. Go for the oceanfront setting and musicians, not because you need another expensive dinner on the schedule.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s music program teaches the tradition through representative tunings and techniques including chimes, hammer-ons, and slides.

It is not the same as Hawaiian steel guitar. It is also more specific than a generic hotel listing for “island music.” Listen for the thumb carrying a steady bass line while the fingers play melody above it. One player can fill more space than the number of hands seems to allow.

A festival lets you hear different players side by side. A weekly show brings context and storytelling. A resort set is built around atmosphere. Choose the format that matches how closely you want to listen.

Start with the music, then solve transportation and meals around it. That order prevents a common mistake: booking dinner first, then learning the performance is across the island, sold separately, or finished before the reservation.

Ask before recording hula or an intimate concert. Keep conversation down when the event is presented as a listening room. Tip when a venue has a tip jar. If recordings are available, buy directly from the artist table. At a free community performance, remember that “free” describes admission, not the value of the work.

For Kona, check the organizer’s event listing before committing to October 18. Buy Waimea tickets only from Kahilu Theatre. For Kauaʻi, wait for the foundation to reconfirm its venue before paying around November 8. For everything else, check the venue calendar during the week of travel.
