Oahu's North Shore changes character in winter. Hawaii Ocean Safety defines the winter ocean season as November through April, when northern Pacific storms can send extremely high, dangerous and unpredictable surf to many north- and west-facing beaches. Plan a North Shore day as a movable part of your winter 2026–27 trip.

Work through three decisions: whether to drive north, whether conditions allow shoreline viewing after checking with the lifeguard on duty, and when to switch plans. Our beach guides, Ocean Report and contest guide help with different parts of that decision.

Planning goes wrong when four different things get treated as one. Keep them apart:

• Seasonal likelihood. Hawaii Ocean Safety's surf seasons page describes winter as the period when northern Pacific storms produce extremely high and unpredictable surf on north and west shores. It does not name a peak month, give odds for a given week, or say every winter day is rough.
• Today's forecast. The NWS Honolulu surf forecast provides the official surf forecast. Our Ocean Report gathers the NWS surf forecasts, NOAA tides and water temperature in one place as a convenient starting point. Neither is a beach-safety clearance, and a swell height on its own does not tell you whether a shoreline is safe to approach.
• Organizer information. Check the World Surf League schedule and the official Eddie Aikau page for organizer updates. If current details are missing, leave that part of your plan tentative. Our contest season guide covers holding windows and day-of logistics.
• On-site safety decision. Ask the lifeguard on duty, read posted warnings and respect closures. A forecast or event call cannot clear a viewing spot for you.

Make a provisional plan, then check again before leaving. A short routine:

• Read the NWS surf forecast, then check our Travel Alerts page for anything current that affects the North Shore. Follow current official notices and closures; an omitted alert is not proof of access.
• If a contest is inside its holding period, confirm whether organizers have actually called it on. A calendar window is not a promise of competition on your chosen day.
• Decide what the party actually wants from the day: watching a contest, asking about shoreline viewing at a lifeguarded beach, or a quieter town day in Haleiwa. Each is a legitimate outcome, so nobody feels the day failed if the first option does not materialize.
• Agree on a switch trigger before you leave. If the lifeguard advises against approaching the shoreline, or alerts show a closure, choose an alternative whose access you have checked.

North Shore contests are useful planning markers, but they are not fixed-date spectacles in the way a mainland football game is. Treat them as a possible bonus layered onto a day that works without them.

Ocean Safety's list of lifeguarded beaches includes Sunset Beach, Ehukai Beach Park and Waimea Bay. Use that page for current schedules rather than assuming a guard is present at a given hour, and remember that being on the list is not an all-clear for the day you visit.

Choose by what the party wants to see rather than by reputation alone. Ehukai Beach Park is the beach associated with Pipeline. Sunset Beach is a contest venue in its own right. Waimea Bay is the example Ocean Safety uses to illustrate how strongly the same beach can differ between summer and winter. Whichever you pick, Ocean Safety's north-shore guidance applies: inexperienced and novice surfers, and swimmers of any skill level, should avoid entering the water in high surf. Plan large-surf visits around whether shore viewing is appropriate; do not treat the beach as a swimming stop in high surf.

Ocean Safety's shoreline safety page warns that even dry sand can be washed quickly by fast-rising surf, shorebreak can knock people down and pull them in, and scenic lookouts may be reached by water during high surf.

The practical sequence is to speak with the lifeguard on duty before you approach, follow signs and barriers, and let the day's conditions set where you stand. Beyond that, the official guidance is specific:

• Do not turn your back to the ocean for photographs.
• Stay off shoreline rocks, ledges, cliffs, sea groins and crevices.
• If someone is swept in, call 911 and do not jump in after them.

If the lifeguard advises against approaching the shoreline, or signs close the area, that is your switch trigger, and the alternative plan below is already in hand.

Suppose your group has Tuesday and Wednesday free and wants one North Shore day and one inland day. This is a planning example, not a forecast.

Before choosing the day: read the NWS surf forecast and current access notices. If a contest matters to you, check its organizer's latest call. Keep both days flexible; no particular swell height is a go-ahead to approach the shore.

On the North Shore day: check the current lifeguard schedule for your chosen beach, then speak with the guard on duty and follow signs and closures before approaching the shoreline. For the inland alternative: Waimea Valley is one option to assess separately. Check its current access and hours; inland does not mean open or unaffected by weather. Avoid making waterfall swimming a requirement for the day.

If neither day works for shoreline viewing, keep the alternative. A flexible itinerary includes the option to skip the beach.

Choose lodging for the whole Oahu trip, rather than solely for a contest that may not run during your stay. Leave time for a change of plan instead of promising the group a fixed beach arrival or return time.
