Almost three years after the August 2023 wildfire, Lahaina reached a major recovery milestone: Front Street from Pāpalaua Street to Shaw Street reopened to vehicles on August 1, 2026. The repaired roadway and makai-side sidewalk make the town easier to reach, but rebuilding continues and fenced or private areas remain off-limits.

If you’re heading to West Maui, visit for the businesses and cultural places that are ready to receive you, not to sightsee through damaged property. Spend locally, follow posted access rules, and expect temporary closures as infrastructure and buildings are restored.

The County’s July reopening notice lists completed debris and offshore-piling removal, seawall and sidewalk repairs, new railings, tree planting, road paving, and striping along Front Street. It also says ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace, Kimo’s, and more than a dozen other businesses are moving forward as commercial activity returns.

Reopening a road is not the same as finishing the town. Homes, businesses, utilities, and cultural resources are still being restored. The County of Maui’s Lahaina recovery page is the best source for current project status and access changes.

The north end of Front Street survived the fire. Five restaurants anchor this stretch, and all are open:

Honu Oceanside — Oceanfront seafood restaurant at 1295 Front Street; its current site lists nightly dinner seatings.

Star Noodle — Asian-inspired share plates, noodles, and ramen on the oceanfront.

Māla Ocean Tavern — Oceanfront restaurant with fish, produce-forward dishes, and cocktails.

Coco Deck — Reopened as a casual neighborhood bar and kitchen after the fire. Its official address is 1312 Front Street, near Kapunakea Street and Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Aloha Mixed Plate — Casual plate lunches in an oceanfront setting.

The Lahaina Cannery Mall has also reopened several shops — jewelry, clothing, home goods. The Safeway and Longs Drugs are operating.

The Banyan Tree is alive. Arborists spent months nursing it with water, compost, and soil treatment after the fire. New growth is visible — green shoots from charred branches. It’s become a quiet gathering spot and a symbol that Lahaina is coming back.

The historic Old Lahaina Courthouse and Baldwin Home Museum remain closed while the Lahaina Restoration Foundation develops reopening plans. This refers to the historic visitor site, not the separate state District Court operation.

The Old Lahaina Luau is operating. Check its current calendar and policies directly before planning around a performance.

Market Street, Papelekane Street, and Mokuhinia Place remain closed for ongoing work, including the State’s Lahaina Harbor dredging project. Private property, construction areas, and anything behind fencing remain off-limits even when the adjacent public street is open.

Lahaina Small Boat Harbor has limited permitted commercial operations while recovery work continues. Confirm the departure harbor with the exact tour operator; do not assume an older Lahaina listing still departs from Lahaina.

Kaʻanapali and Kapalua are the established resort bases north of Lahaina. Confirm current services and any property-specific recovery impacts directly with the accommodation before booking.

Maui County’s vacation rental phaseout law (Bill 9) targets certain apartment-zoned short-term rentals. Legal rentals still operate in 2026, but the rules depend on the exact property’s zoning and authorization. Verify that status before booking.

Eat at the surviving Front Street restaurants. They kept their doors open through the worst period in Lahaina’s history.

For a tour advertised from Lahaina Harbor, confirm the current departure point and operating status directly with the company before paying.

Shop at Cannery Mall and the small businesses along the north end. Moana Glass on Keawe Street offers glass-blowing classes — a hands-on experience that directly supports a local artisan.

If you want to volunteer, use Maui Recovers to find current, locally coordinated opportunities rather than arriving at a work site unannounced.

One thing to keep in mind: sensitivity matters. The fire killed 102 people and displaced thousands. Driving through the burn zone for photos feels different than visiting an open business. Follow the lead of the community. If an area is fenced off, it’s not a photo op. Spend your money, be present, and let the locals set the tone.
